    • Jeff Baker went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer before being removed for a pinch-hitter Friday against the Mariners.
Advice: Baker is only playing against left-handers, so manager Ron Washington made the switch back to David Murphy when the Mariners brought in a righty. Baker has been terrific at his job so far, hitting .354 with five homers in 48 at-bats. Still, his fantasy value is quite limited while he plays on average twice a week.

    • Chris Capuano gave up six runs -- five earned -- in five innings Friday in a loss to the Cardinals.
Advice: Capuano turned in back-to-back strong outings before tonight's stinker against a fine St. Louis offense, so we'll let him off the hook. It wouldn't have mattered much if he had allowed only one or two runs anyway; the Dodger offense wasn't getting anything done in the shutout tonight.

    • Orioles placed RHP Pedro Strop on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 24, with a lower back strain.
Advice: The move clears a spot on the 25-man roster for Steve Johnson. Strop has a 6.11 ERA with 14 walks over 17 2/3 innings with the Orioles.

    • Pedro Strop was slapped with a loss Monday against the Yankees after allowing two runs over two-thirds of an inning.
Advice: Called upon to begin the 10th inning, Strop gave up consecutive doubles to Ichiro Suzuki and Vernon Wells before recording a pair of outs. He was asked to intentionally walk Robinson Cano before the O's tabbed Brian Matusz, who allowed an inherited runner to score. Strop's stuff is absolutely lethal, but his post-WBC efforts haven't impressed. The 27-year-old holds a 5.19 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 21 appearances. He's got closer's stuff, but is nowhere close to being trusted in the ninth inning.

    • John Danks was solid in his first start back from shoulder surgery Friday, giving up three runs in six-plus innings in a no-decision against the Marlins.
Advice: He reached the 90s a couple of times with his fastball, but mostly sat in the high 80s. Danks was pulled after giving up a leadoff double to Marcell Ozuna in the top of the seventh inning. Ozuna eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly, which cost Danks a chance at the victory. Still, it was an encouraging outing for the southpaw, as he gave up just four hits and walked nine while striking out five. He has another favorable matchup next week against the Cubs, but most mixed league owners can afford to wait and see for now.

    • White Sox activated LHP John Danks from the 15-day disabled list.
Advice: He'll make his season debut on Friday against the Marlins. Danks wound up posting a 3.18 during his four rehab starts, but he held a 15/13 K/BB ratio and his velocity isn't all the way back yet. Consider him only in AL-only formats for the time being.

    • John Danks (shoulder) will be activated from the disabled list to make his season debut Friday against the Marlins.
Advice: White Sox manager Robin Ventura finally made the decision official on Wednesday night. Danks posted a 3.18 ERA during his four rehab starts, but he also had a 15/13 K/BB ratio and is still dealing with diminished velocity. Mixed leaguers should stay away for now.

    • John Danks (shoulder) went 4 2/3 innings Saturday in his third minor league rehab start.
Advice: If everything checks out with the left-hander early this week, he should be cleared to join the White Sox starting rotation on Friday night against the Marlins. Danks has been on the shelf all year and makes for a decent waiver stash right now in AL-only fantasy leagues. Since he's coming off shoulder surgery and still rebuilding his arm strength, it might not be wise to trust him right out of the gate in standard mixed formats. Even against Miami.

    • Jake Westbrook (elbow) will seek a second opinion next week, likely from Dr. James Andrews.
Advice: It's certainly not good news after Westbrook claimed to feel fine after playing catch on Friday. He had cut a previous bullpen session short earlier in the week due to discomfort, so there's definitely something amiss with the elbow. The Cardinals were originally hopeful he would miss the minimum 15 days, but at this point there isn't even a timetable for his return.

    • Jake Westbrook (elbow) played catch on flat ground on Friday.
Advice: The encouraging news is that he said his elbow felt fine afterwards. He attempted to throw a from a mound for the first time on Wednesday, but had to cut the session short after feeling lingering pain in his elbow. He's not on a specific throwing program at the moment, they'll continue to play it day-by-day based on how he's feeling. He's still not anywhere close to returning to the rotation.

    • Jake Westbrook had to stop his bullpen session Wednesday after 20 pitches due to pain in his right elbow.
Advice: Well, that's not good. Westbrook felt fine while playing catch, but this was the first time since landing on the disabled list that he tried to throw from a mound. The right-hander isn't sure what the next step is, but obviously he's not going to be back anytime soon.

    • Jake Westbrook (elbow) will throw off a mound on Wednesday.
Advice: Westbrook had been slated to throw off the bump Tuesday, but he threw on flat ground again instead. The sinkerballer is expected to miss a couple more starts but is on track to rejoin the rotation in early June if he can avoid setbacks.

    • Jake Westbrook (elbow) plans to resume throwing from a mound on Tuesday.
Advice: It comes after he made 25 flat-ground throws from 60 feet on Sunday and 50 throws from 90 feet on Monday. Westbrook seems likely to need a rehab start or two before returning, but there's no word on when that might take place. He'll likely be back in early June if he can avoid a setback.

    • Miguel Sano leads all Florida State League third baseman in total chances, putouts and assists and ranks third in range factor.
Advice: There's been some concern over whether Sano can stay at third base in the long-term, but he's made enough progress that he won't be moving anytime soon. Through his first 44 games this season, Sano is batting .348/.442/.689 with 13 home runs and 37 RBI at the Twins' High-A affiliate.

    • Tyler Chatwood blanked the Giants for six innings Friday to win his third straight start.
Advice: Josh Outman, Matt Belisle and Wilton Lopez finished the five-hit shutout in a 5-0. Chatwood is sporting a nifty 1.90 ERA in four starts since joining the rotation, so it looks like he'll last for a while. We still don't trust him, not with his subpar command and poor changeup.

    • Joe Saunders fell to 3-5 after giving up six runs in five innings against the Rangers on Friday.
Advice: The Mariners had to know Saunders would give up more than his share of homers and hits after adding him to their rotation; the surprise is that he's already walked 22 batters in 57 2/3 innings. Last year, he walked a total of 39 in 174 2/3 innings. Saunders is at best a matchup guy in AL-only leagues. He'll be worth playing next week when he gets a road start in San Diego.

    • Freddy Garcia yielded three runs (two earned) in five innings Saturday in a win over the Blue Jays.
Advice: All in all, not bad considering how the Blue Jays have been swinging the bats recently. Garcia scattered nine hits while striking out one batter and walking none. The veteran right-hander has a 4.61 ERA and 9/6 K/BB ratio in 27 1/3 innings across his first five starts with Baltimore. While he shouldn't be an option in most fantasy leagues, he's doing fine as a stopgap option in the starting rotation.

    • Freddy Garcia yielded two runs and three hits in six innings Monday in a no-decision against the Yankees.
Advice: Garcia was in line for the win until Troy Patton and Jim Johnson gave up runs. Both runs Garcia allowed came on solo homers. He's now allowed six homers in four starts for the Orioles, which is why he's such a bad risk in AL-only leagues.

    • Jordan Walden (shoulder) threw a bullpen session at Citi Field on Friday.
Advice: If Walden can avoid setbacks, he should be cleared for a rehab assignment and rejoin the Braves at some point next week. With Eric O'Flaherty out for the season, Walden is likely to return in a setup role with Luis Avilan.

    • Jordan Walden (shoulder) will not be ready to be activated from the disabled list next Monday.
Advice: That's the first day he's eligible to return, but the right-hander is not quite far along enough. Walden will throw a bullpen session later this week and then head out on a short minor league rehab assignment. He should be ready for activation just before the end of May.

    • Jordan Walden said his right shoulder felt "pretty good" after he played catch on Monday.
Advice: It's the first time he's played catch since landing on the disabled list. Walden is shooting to return next Monday when first eligible, but we won't know if that's a realistic goal until he throws from a mound. "That's what we're shooting for, but it's got to be feeling good," Walden said. ".I just need to make sure I'm fully healthy when I come back because we already have great guys down there still. I just want to be part of it down there. I want to be able to help out Craig (Kimbrel) a little bit."

    • Tom Koehler yielded three runs in six innings Friday in a no-decision against the Marlins.
Advice: Koehler scattered six hits while striking out three and walking one. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed three runs or fewer in all three of his starts since joining the rotation earlier this month. He isn't going to get many wins with this lineup, but give him a try in NL-only formats.

    • Jeremy Guthrie gave up seven runs (six earned) over seven innings in Saturday's loss to the Angels.
Advice: It was an odd outing for Guthrie, who fell behind in the fourth inning due to an error and an RBI ground out and didn't give up his first hit until Hank Conger connected for a solo homer in the sixth. Josh Hamilton launched a solo shot of his own one inning later while the Angels broke through with four runs in the eighth. After posting a 2.28 ERA over his first seven starts, Guthrie has a 7.91 ERA over his last three outings. He'll hope to turn things around next week against the Cardinals, but it isn't a promising matchup for fantasy purposes.

  • Mon, May 20
    • Jeremy Guthrie took a second straight loss after allowing six runs in five innings Monday against the Astros.
Advice: Well, that's disappointing. Guthrie allowed seven homers in his first seven starts, going 5-0 with a 2.28 ERA. In his last two, he's allowed six homers, while also striking out just two batters and walking six. Not that Guthrie was ever likely to maintain an ERA in the low-2.00s, but he has picked a surprising time to come apart, facing the dregs of the AL West (it was the Angels last time out). Mixed leaguers may want to move on, if not now then after his home start against the Angels this weekend.

    • Matt Dominguez (quad) was 1-for-3 with a home run Friday in his return to the lineup.
Advice: Dominguez missed two days with a quad injury, but it was never a major concern. The 23-year-old now has five home runs and is batting .247/.389/.670 in 44 games this season.

    • Matt Dominguez (quad) is expected to return to the Astros' starting lineup on Friday evening.
Advice: Dominguez sat out Wednesday and will also use Thursday's scheduled team off day to rest his tight left quad. "I'm starting to figure certain things out at the plate, and I like to play," said the third baseman, "but it's better to take the two days off now than risking weeks when it's something that can be treated pretty easily."

    • Matt Dominguez is out of the Astros' lineup on Wednesday night because of left quad tightness.
Advice: The Astros have a scheduled team off day on Thursday, so giving Dominguez the night off Wednesday affords him two full days of rest. The 23-year-old third baseman is batting just .245/.275/.371 in 43 games this season but he's one of the best defensive infielders in MLB.

    • Matt Dominguez went 2-for-4 and hit a three-run homer off Jeremy Guthrie as the Astros topped the Royals 6-5 on Monday.
Advice: Dominguez has four homers in 10 days after going his first 33 games without one. Unfortunately, that is all he's done in the 10 days; he has just two other hits and no walks besides the homers, and his average has dipped to .239. Still, it's a whole lot better than no homers.
