  • Valbuena powers Astros with a pair of homers
Luis Valbuena hit a pair of solo home runs and lifted a sacrifice fly to help the Astros beat the Mariners on Monday.

Advice: Valbuena hit his first homer in the first inning off of Hisashi Iwakuma and his second in the eighth inning against Danny Farquhar. Valbuena, pushed out of the picture with the Cubs by the impending arrival of Kris Bryant, has been a nice find for the Astros. He has five home runs, seven RBI, and a .244/.304/.634 slash line in 46 plate appearances.

  • Maikel Franco enjoying a nine-game hit streak
Phillies prospect Maikel Franco has hit .415 during his nine-game hitting streak for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Franco extended the streak with a 2-for-5 effort on Sunday. He leads the International League with eight doubles and also has the most total bases with 30. The 22-year-old corner infielder is making a strong case for a promotion. Franco hit .179 in 16 games for the Phillies last season.

  • Paredes at DH and batting second on Mon.
Jimmy Paredes is at DH and batting second for the Orioles on Monday morning against the Red Sox.

Advice: Paredes is 5-for-10 with four runs scored in two games since being activated from the disabled list on Saturday. He's a nice value play in daily fantasy leagues.

  • Jake Lamb sitting out versus righty
Jake Lamb is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup Sunday.

Advice: He's on the bench in favor of Aaron Hill even with the D'Backs facing a righty (Tim Hudson). Lamb is hitting a blistering .414/.514/.690 with one homer and nine RBI this season. Tuffy Gosewisch is also sitting out, with Jordan Pacheco getting a start behind the plate.

  • MRI on Escobar's groin shows inflammation
An MRI on Yunel Escobar's groin showed only inflammation.

Advice: Escobar was injured on Friday when he tweaked his groin while running out a ground ball. He'll avoid the disabled list for now, as the hope is that he can work out Sunday and return to the lineup Tuesday after Monday's off day. Danny Espinosa is at third base Sunday.

  • Mike Olt (wrist) needs 3-4 weeks of rest
Mike Olt (wrist) said Saturday that he expects to need 3-4 weeks of rest before beginning rehab work.

Advice: Olt is sporting a cast after suffering a hairline fracture in his right wrist. Considering that it might be a month before he's allowed to begin rehabbing the wrist, it sounds like the chances are good that he'll be out until June. With Kris Bryant now up, Olt no longer has a clear path to playing time.

  • Galvis knocks in two runs in win
Freddy Galvis went 2-for-5 with two RBI on Saturday against the Nationals.

Advice: Galvis had a pair of RBI singles in the victory. The 25-year-old probably wouldn't be hitting second for any other team, but he's made starts from there in seven out of the last eight games. He's hitting .317 (13-for-41) with a .378 on-base percentage so far, so don't look for Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg to change it.

  • Orioles activate Jimmy Paredes from DL
Orioles activated INF Jimmy Paredes from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: Paredes is taking the place of Jonathan Schoop on the active roster who was placed on the disabled list on Saturday with a knee injury. He'll function in a utility role for the O's.
    Saturday, 10:14 am
  • Orioles place Jonathan Schoop (knee) on DL
Orioles placed INF Jonathan Schoop on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 1 PCL tear in his left knee.

Advice: Schoop also has a sprained MCL. He sustained the injury in Friday's game from a hard slide by Pablo Sandoval at second base. The O's are encouraged that there was no damage to his ACL and are optimistic that he'll be able to return before the end of the regular season. Ryan Flaherty and Everth Cabrera should both see regular playing time in Baltimore's middle infield for now.

  • Trevor Plouffe not in Twins lineup Saturday
Trevor Plouffe is not in the Twins starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Eduardo Nunez is getting the start in his place at third base and will bat eighth for the Twins against Danny Salazar and the Indians. Plouffe should return to his place at the hot corner for Sunday's series finale.
    Saturday, 8:23 am
  • Castellanos not in Tigers lineup on Saturday
Nick Castellanos is not in the Tigers starting lineup for Saturday afternoon's tilt against the White Sox.

Advice: It's just a routine day of rest for the young third baseman. Hernan Perez is getting the start in his place at the hot corner and will bat eighth for the Tigers against Chris Sale and the White Sox.
    Saturday, 7:22 am
  • Jake Lamb reaches four times
Jake Lamb went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and two walks Friday against the Giants.

Advice: Lamb did lose an at-bat to Yasmany Tomas tonight, but that's only because the rout was on. He won't be losing any starts to the Cuban defector, not with the way he's performed the first two weeks. He's 11-for-25 with nine RBI.

  • Plouffe launches walk-off HR vs. Indians
Trevor Plouffe delivered a walk-off solo homer in a 3-2 win over the Indians in 11 innings on Friday night.

Advice: How's that for a slump-buster? Plouffe came into Friday's action hitting .133 and went hitless over his first four at-bats before taking Bryan Shaw deep to leadoff the bottom of the 11th and send the Target Field fans home happy. The 28-year-old hasn't been able to replicate the power production he had in 2012, but he's capable of being a useful corner infielder in deeper mixed leagues.
    Friday, 9:58 pm
  • Yunel Escobar leaves with apparent injury
Yunel Escobar was removed from Friday's game against the Phillies in the fourth inning with an apparent injury.

Advice: Escobar appeared to come up lame while running out a ground ball in his final at-bat and did not take his place in the field defensively. The team should have an update on his status shortly.

  • Mike Olt (wrist) placed on disabled list
Cubs placed 3B Mike Olt on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 15, with a hairline fracture in his right wrist.

Advice: Olt initially hurt the wrist last Saturday, but he was allowed to take a few at-bats after that because initial tests didn't reveal the hairline fracture. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined, but with Kris Bryant up now, Olt doesn't have a path to playing time.

According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago, Mike Olt (wrist) will be placed on the disabled list to create room on the big league roster for Kris Bryant.

  • Paredes (back) to begin rehab stint Friday
Jimmy Paredes (back) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Friday.

Advice: Paredes, who began the season on the DL with a lower back strain, will play with Double-A Bowie on Friday before moving to Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday. The Orioles have a bit of a roster crunch at the moment, so they could keep him on his rehab stint for close to the maximum of 20 days.

  • Jonathan Schoop homers, draws rare walk
Jonathan Schoop went 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk Wednesday as the Orioles beat the Yankees 7-5.

Advice: The walk was just his first, but that still puts him ahead of last year's pace (13 in 455 at-bats). The homer, on the other hand, was his third already. Schoop is a legitimate threat to lead all second basemen in homers this year. It still might not give him much mixed-league value, since his average will be problematic and he's a zero in steals, but it's hard not to like the pop.

  • Asche logs three hits in a losing effort
Cody Asche went 3-for-3 with a walk and a double as the Phillies dropped Wednesday's game to the Mets.

Advice: Asche, quietly, has started the season on a torrid pace. Following Tuesday's effort, he's hitting a cool .500 (12-for-24). That being said, 11 of those hits are singles. The pace, of course, isn't sustainable as Asche hit .252 and slugged .390 last season -- both are more indicative of his skill level.

Lonnie Chisenhall went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in Wednesday's win over the White Sox.

Advice: Chisenhall's two-run double in the fourth inning proved to plate the winning RBI for the Tribe. He also added a single in the game. The two-hit contest was Chisenhall's first of the season, as he's batting just .227/.292/.273 in the early going.

  • Eric Campbell recalled from Triple-A
Mets recalled INF/OF Eric Campbell from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Advice: Campbell should see some playing time at third base while David Wright (hamstring) is on the shelf. He batted .263/.322/.358 with three homers, 16 RBI and three steals over 211 plate appearances for the Mets last season. He was off to a blistering .550/.625/1.050 start at Triple-A in 2015.

  • Chisenhall not in Tuesday's lineup

  • Escobar batting leadoff for Nats on Tuesday
Yunel Escobar will bat leadoff Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Jonathan Schoop (quad) went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in his return to the lineup Monday against the Yankees.

Jake Lamb went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a stolen base, and two runs scored as the Diamondbacks topped the Padres on Monday.

Advice: Lamb has done nothing but hit to start the season, now carrying a .400 average in 15 at-bats. He has split time at third base with Aaron Hill, sitting against left-handed pitching. That will likely be the case until the D'Backs are able to find a trade partner for Hill.

Freddy Galvis had a three-hit game as the Phillies were shutout by the Mets on Monday.

Advice: Galvis was hitting eighth for the fourth time today. He's also hit second on three occasions, including a couple of games where Odubel Herrera was nursing an injury last week. Phillies prospect Maikel Franco went 3-for-7 with a pair of doubles Sunday in a win over Triple-A Pawtucket.

Advice: The game went 16 innings, which would explain Franco's high at-bat total. The 22-year-old had just two hits in his first three games prior to Sunday's win.
