  • Cora says Olivera release story is 'not true'
Criollos de Caguas manager Alex Cora says it's "not true" that Hector Olivera was released from the Puerto Rican Winter League team after arriving a day late from a visit in Miami with his ill sister.

Advice: It's not clear which part of the story Cora is referring to as being less than factual. There should be some clarification coming soon. Olivera hit .275 (19-for-69) with zero homers and two doubles in 18 games with Caguas before getting released on Sunday afternoon. David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was told Monday that Olivera got permission to fly to Miami last week to visit his sister in the hospital and missed his flight back. Cora responded to a tweet from O'Brien stating: "David, that's not true." Yesterday, 1:09 pm

  • A's still see Semien as their shortstop
Athletics general manager David Forst indicated Wednesday that he still sees Marcus Semien as their starting shortstop.

Advice: With Jed Lowrie back in Oakland, it's only natural that Forst would be asked about Semien, who led the majors with 35 errors this past season. However, it appears that they didn't acquire Lowrie with shortstop in mind. It's possible he could play second base or third. Wednesday, 10:51 am

  • Athletics reunited with Jed Lowrie in trade
Athletics acquired INF Jed Lowrie from the Astros for RHP Brendan McCurry.

Advice: Lowrie signed a three-year contract with the Astros last winter, but he's headed back to Oakland after just one season. The 31-year-old got off to a great start in 2015 before suffering a thumb injury in late April and just couldn't get back on track with the bat after returning during the second half. It's unclear what the Athletics have in mind for him, but he's likely to receive regular playing time in 2016. Wednesday, 8:51 am

  • Report: A's acquire Jed Lowrie from Astros
Jane Lee of reports that the Athletics have acquired Jed Lowrie from the Astros.

Advice: No word yet on who is headed back to Houston. Lowrie, who previously played with the Athletics from 2013-2014, batted .222 with nine home runs and a .712 OPS in 69 games this past season. He's owed $7.5 million in 2016 and $6.5 million in 2017 while his contract includes a $6 million club option or $1 million buyout for 2018. He's yet another moving part for Oakland's infield. • Braves sign Tuiasosopo to minor league deal
Braves signed OF Matt Tuiasosopo to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Tuiasosopo, 29, spent the 2015 season with the Triple-A affiliate for the White Sox while batting .230/.344/.447 with 18 home runs and 52 RBI over 103 games. He hasn't appeared in the majors since 2013 as a member of the Tigers, but with the Braves in tear-down mode, anything is possible. Tuesday, 11:12 am

  • Braves sign Brignac to minor league deal
Braves signed INF Reid Brignac to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Brignac, who turns 30 in January, appeared in 17 games with the Marlins this past season and owns a lowly .219/.266/.310 batting line in the majors. He's simply organizational fodder at this point. Tuesday, 11:08 am

  • D'Backs sign Carlos Rivero to minors deal
Diamondbacks signed INF Carlos Rivero to a minor league contract.

Advice: Rivero hit just .254/.299/.355 at Triple-A in 2015. He has flashed some pop against left-handers, but this is nothing more than an organizational depth move for Arizona. Monday, 1:04 pm

  • Blue Jays sign David Adams to minors deal
Blue Jays signed INF David Adams to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Adams slashed .294/.399/.391 this summer at Triple-A while appearing defensively at first base, second base, and third. The 28-year-old has been tearing it up in the Venezuelan Winter League, but it'll be a surprise if he is on the Jays' Opening Day roster next spring. Monday, 8:13 am
