  • Dioner Navarro still wants to be traded
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Dioner Navarro "renewed his interest in a trade this week."

Advice: Navarro requested a trade over the winter after the Blue Jays signed Russell Martin and he apparently still desires to be somewhere where he could catch more. He's been the Jays' backup catcher and occasional designated hitter but would probably represent an upgrade as a starting catcher for a handful of clubs.

  • Phegley plates a pair in 4-0 win over Seattle
Josh Phegley went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Thursday's win over the Mariners.

Advice: Phegley has been stellar in a part-time role for the A's, slashing .280/.333/.523 in 107 at-bats. He's also been an asset throwing out potential base robbers.

  • Mariners ink Erik Kratz to minor league deal
Mariners signed C Erik Kratz to a minor league contract.

Advice: The veteran backstop elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier in the week. While he'll begin at Triple-A Tacoma, he should work his way up to the big league club in relatively short order.

  • Ryan Hanigan (hand) activated from DL
Red Sox activated C Ryan Hanigan from the 60-day disabled list.

Advice: He missed about two months with a fractured hand. For now, the Red Sox will keep three catchers. Hanigan will bat ninth Thursday against Toronto. The 34-year-old is hitting .222 this year with one homer and five RBI.

  • James McCann not in Tigers' lineup Thurs.
James McCann is not in the Tigers' lineup Thursday.

Advice: Bryan Holaday will start behind the plate against the Pirates. It's just a day of rest for McCann.

  • Matt Wieters sitting out on Wednesday
Matt Wieters is not in the Orioles' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: Wieters remains unable to catch on back-to-back days. Joseph is behind the dish.
    Wednesday, 12:17 pm
  • Ryan Hanigan (hand) delayed by flight
Ryan Hanigan (hand) wasn't activated from the disabled list Wednesday because of a flight cancellation that delayed his arrival in Toronto.

Advice: Hanigan is in Toronto now but won't be activated until Thursday. Blake Swihart is likely to be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room on the roster.
    Wednesday, 8:04 am
  • Ryan Hanigan (hand) won't be activated Wed.
Ryan Hanigan (hand) will not be activated from the disabled list Wednesday.

Advice: That's the day the Red Sox had been targeting him to return. The club could be delaying a decision with their catchers, as Blake Swihart has played well of late and the Sox don't want to lose Sandy Leon, who is out of options. Either way, Hanigan will surely be activated later this week.
    Wednesday, 7:07 am
  • Oscar Hernandez to be activated this weekend
Oscar Hernandez (hand) will be activated from the disabled list this weekend.

Advice: Hernandez, a Rule 5 pick, has been out all season with a broken left hamate bone. Jarrod Saltalamacchia has hit just .184/.293/.306 since joining the D'Backs, so the club could designate him for assignment if they don't want to carry three catchers.

  • Braves, Mariners in on Erik Kratz
Robert Murray of reports that the Braves and Mariners are the "frontrunners" to sign Erik Kratz.

Advice: Kratz elected free agency on Monday after clearing waivers. His defense isn't great, but the 35-year-old has some pop and wouldn't be a bad backup catcher for someone.

  • Matt Wieters not starting Monday vs. Texas
Matt Wieters is not in the Orioles' lineup Monday versus the Rangers.

Advice: He still isn't ready to play back-to-back games. Caleb Joseph will start behind the plate and bat eighth. Wieters should be back for Tuesday's game.

  • Erik Kratz clears waivers, elects free agency
Erik Kratz has elected to become a free agent.

Advice: He went unclaimed on waivers after the Red Sox designated him for assignment last week. Jon Morosi of Fox Sports suggests the Mariners could be interested. The 35-year-old has appeared in four major league games this season, all with Kansas City.

  • Red Sox could keep three catchers
The Red Sox could keep three catchers when Ryan Hanigan (hand) returns from the disabled list on Wednesday.

Advice: Sandy Leon would seem to be the odd man out but he'd have to clear waivers to go to the minor leagues, which would give other teams a chance to claim him. The Red Sox don't have much catching depth with Christian Vasquez out for the season and Humberto Quintero on Triple-A Pawtucket's disabled list. Leon hasn't provided much offense (.160 in 75 at-bats) but he's been Boston's best defensive catcher.

  • Welington Castillo powers D'Backs to victory
Welington Castillo clobbered a three-run homer on Sunday, powering the Diamondbacks to a 6-4 victory over the Padres in San Diego.

Advice: The second inning blast off Padres starter Odrisamer Despaigne put the D'Backs ahead, a lead they wouldn't relinquish. He finished the night 1-for-4 and is now hitting .200/.260/.400 with six long balls and 18 RBI on the season.
    Sunday, 6:44 pm
  • Red Sox outright Erik Kratz to Triple-A
Red Sox sent C Erik Kratz outright to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Advice: The 35-year-old was designated for assignment earlier in the week by the Red Sox, just a few days after being claimed off waivers from the Royals. He'll continue to provide organizational catching depth for the Red Sox.

  • McCann walk-off HR completes Tigers' comeback
James McCann smacked a walk-off, solo home run in the Tigers' comeback win over the White Sox Sunday.

Advice: The Tigers were dominated for seven innings by Jeff Samardzija, but they tied things up in the eighth with Victor Martinez's bases-clearing double. McCann, who singled and scored in the eighth, then won it by depositing a Zach Putnam pitch just over the left-field wall. Alex Avila (knee) is due back soon, but McCann will continue to start versus lefties.

  • Kyle Schwarber cranks first Triple-A home run
Cubs C prospect Kyle Schwarber blasted his first Triple-A home run Saturday for Iowa.

Advice: Schwarber homered in the majors before hitting his first Triple-A home run. The 22-year-old finished a triple shy of the cycle on Saturday and is now batting .263 in 19 at-bats for Iowa. Schwarber's bat is big-league ready. Now he just needs to work on his catching.

  • Tommy Joseph moves from C to 1B
The Phillies are converting former catcher prospect Tommy Joseph to a first baseman.

Advice: Joseph was once a nice prospect behind the plate, but he's dealt with numerous concussions and the Phils have finally decided enough is enough. "He’s not going to catch going forward," said director of player development Joe Jordan. "We’re not going to expose him to that type of risk. Tommy is very excited about the move and anxious to get back on the field playing again." Joseph is hitting just .123/.135/.178 this season and it's fair to question whether he has enough bat to profile at first base.

  • Matt Wieters sitting out first game Sunday
Matt Wieters is not in the Orioles' lineup for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Indians.

Advice: Wieters isn't catching back-to-back games yet, so obviously he was going to have to sit out one of Sunday's contests. Expect him back out there for the night cap. Caleb Joseph is behind the plate for the first game.

  • Susac delivers three-run double against Rox
Andrew Susac went 2-for-4 with three RBI in a win over the Rockies on Saturday.

Advice: With the bases loaded and one out in the seventh inning, Susac came through with a double that cleared the bases. He's got an eight-game hitting streak that has run his line to .288/.367/.463. With Buster Posey behind the dish, Susac remains a part-time player, even with his offensive ability.

  • Cubs designate Rafael Lopez for assignment
Cubs designated C Rafael Lopez for assignment.

Advice: The Cubs view Kyle Schwarber as their catcher of the future and want to give him as many reps as possible. Lopez has posted a respectable .276 average in 46 games for Triple-A Iowa this season, though his power has been nonexistent (no homers in 156 at-bats). The 27-year-old shouldn't have trouble finding a new team.

  • Kurt Suzuki not in the Twins lineup Saturday
Kurt Suzuki is not in the Twins starting lineup against the Brewers on Saturday.

Advice: Just a day of rest for the veteran backstop. Chris Herrmann will get the start behind the dish for the Twins and bat sixth against Matt Garza and the Brewers.
    Saturday, 8:29 am
  • Francisco Cervelli not in Friday's lineup
Francisco Cervelli is not in the Pirates' lineup Friday.

Advice: It's a rare day off for him when Gerrit Cole isn't on the mound. Chris Stewart is catching in Cervelli's place.
    Friday, 12:20 pm
  • Wieters homers as Orioles outlast Red Sox
Matt Wieters went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, helping the Orioles outlast the Red Sox on Thursday.

Advice: Wieters homered as part of the Orioles' six-run fourth inning in which they battered starter Eduardo Rodriguez. The backstop has made only 12 starts since coming off of the disabled list, but has homered three times, knocked in 10 runs, and is batting .292/.321/.604.
    Thursday, 1:45 pm
  • Red Sox DFA veteran catcher Erik Kratz
Red Sox designated C Erik Kratz for assignment.

Advice: Kratz was only with the Red Sox for a handful of days and did not make a plate appearance. The 35-year-old catcher was claimed off waivers from the Royals on Sunday.

  • Susac pokes a double and a triple vs. Padres
Andrew Susac went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored in the Giants' 6-0 win versus the Padres on Wednesday night.

Advice: Both extra-base knocks came off Ian Kennedy. San Francisco appears to be getting more comfortable with the notion of playing Brandon Belt in left field, a development which would open up additional at-bats for Susac (with Buster Posey, of course, kicking over to first). Susac certainly deserves more field time. He now boasts a .278/.366/.417 slash line in only 72 at-bats.
    Wednesday, 10:28 pm
  • Matt Wieters sitting out on Wednesday
Matt Wieters is not in the Orioles' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: The O's have been easing Wieters back into things since his activation from the disabled list earlier this month. Caleb Joseph is behind the dish.
    Wednesday, 12:30 pm
  • Francisco Cervelli not in Wednesday's lineup
Francisco Cervelli is not in the Pirates' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: As he has done all season, Chris Stewart is catching Gerrit Cole. Cervelli will be available off the bench.
    Wednesday, 11:31 am
  • Josh Phegley belts fourth home run
Josh Phegley doubled in a pair of runs and smacked a solo homer in Tuesday's win over the Rangers.

Advice: Phegley let a run score on a passed ball in the game, but he certainly made up for it with his bat. The A's have received incredible production at the plate from their catchers this season, as Stephen Vogt is going to be an All-Star and Phegley is hitting .297/.350/.538 with four homers as his backup.
    Tuesday, 8:38 pm
  • Navarro homers in second straight versus Rays
Dioner Navarro went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the Rays.

Advice: Navarro has homered in two straight games after going homerless in his first 18 contests of the season. He's 5-for-8 in his last two games to raise his overall line to .270/.315/.413 with eight RBI.
