  • Semien's two-run single beats Diamondbacks
Marcus Semien came through with a two-out, two-run single off Brad Ziegler in the 11th inning on Sunday, propelling the Athletics to a 7-4 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Ziegler allowed a pair of singles then hit Josh Phegley to load the bases with two outs, setting the stage for Semien's clutch knock. The A's shortstop finished the contest 2-for-6 and is now slashing .253/.297/.390 with 34 RBI. Yesterday, 5:16 pm

  • Nunez launches two-run homer vs McCullers
Eduardo Nunez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's win over the Astros.

Advice: The home run was Nunez's second of the weekend series and his fourth of the season. Playing in a utility role, he's posted some respectable numbers, including a .268/.305/.433 triple-slash with the four homers, 19 RBI and five steals across 164 at-bats. He doesn't see enough playing time for legitimate fantasy consideration, but as a real-life baseball player, he's doing exactly what he should be doing. Yesterday, 2:26 pm
  • Bour homers for second straight game
Justin Bour went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run and a walk in Sunday's loss to the Nationals.

Advice: Bour took a Stephen Strasburg offering for a ride in the first inning, good for a three-run homer. He's now homered in back-to-back games, as he also went yard in Saturday's contest. For the season, the 27-year-old rookie is hitting .250/.320/.442 with 14 homers and 45 RBI. He's showcased some nice power over his 292 at-bats with the Marlins. Yesterday, 1:52 pm
  • Paulsen legs out two-run triple vs PIT
Ben Paulsen went 2-for-3 with a two-run triple and a walk in Sunday's win over the Pirates.

Advice: Paulsen hit his three-bagger off Pirates starter Charlie Morton in the fourth inning. It was his fourth triple of the season. The 27-year-old 1B/OF has hit to a .280/.331/.483 batting line this season, with 10 homers and 42 RBI over 271 at-bats. Yesterday, 1:42 pm

  • Yunel Escobar (hand) still out Sunday
Yunel Escobar (hand) remained out of the Nationals' lineup Sunday.

Advice: He's missed three straight starts with a sore right hand. The good news is that Escobar played catch Sunday, so he could be back in there shortly. Anthony Rendon is handling third base and Danny Espinosa is at second Sunday. Yesterday, 9:13 am
  • Phil Gosselin (thumb) to be activated Monday
Phil Gosselin (thumb) will be activated from the disabled list Monday.

Advice: Gosselin had surgery on his left thumb back in May but is finally ready to return after completing a rehab assignment. He'll be making his Diamondbacks debut after being acquired from the Braves in June. Yesterday, 5:48 am

  • Norris strikes out twice in hit-less effort
Derek Norris went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Saturday's loss to the Phillies.

Advice: Norris is now hit-less in his last seven at-bats, with four strikeouts in that space. While he's set a career high with 13 home runs this season, and will have a career-high RBI number by season's end (he drove in 55 a year ago and currently sits at 54), his overall batting line is just .243/.286/.407. • Bour launches solo homer for lone Marlin run
Justin Bour went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's loss to the Nationals.

Advice: Bour led off the seventh with a solo shot against Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann for his lone hit of the game. And the Marlins' lone run of the game. That, too. A rare 27-year-old rookie, Bour is slashing .250/.321/.434 with 13 homers and 42 RBI this season. Saturday, 6:55 pm
  • Escobar (hand) sitting out again Saturday
Yunel Escobar (hand) is not in the Nationals' starting lineup Saturday against the Marlins.

Advice: It's the second game in a row he's missed with a hand injury. Anthony Rendon is filling in at third base. Escobar has posted a surprising .308 average this year in 408 at-bats. That's well above his .279 career average. He's day-to-day. Saturday, 3:38 pm
  • Morneau goes 1-for-2 in first rehab game
Justin Morneau (concussion) went 1-for-2 in his first minor league rehab game with Double-A New Britain on Friday.

Advice: Morneau hasn't played since mid-May due to the concussion and cervical neck sprain, but he isn't ready to give up on the 2015 season just yet. He'll play in a few more games in the minor leagues before he's re-evaluated on Thursday. If he indeed returns this season, it would be a hit to the fantasy value of Ben Paulsen. Saturday, 8:44 am

  • Athletics option Max Muncy to Triple-A
Athletics optioned INF Max Muncy to Triple-A Nashville.

Advice: It should only be a brief stay for Muncy, who should rejoin the A's on Tuesday when rosters expand. The 25-year-old is hitting .217/.283/.386 with two homers and six RBI in 83 at-bats with the big league club this season. Saturday, 5:23 am

  • Nunez homers in low-scoring win vs Astros
Eduardo Nunez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI in Friday's win over the Astros.

Advice: Nunez cranked a solo home run in the third inning off Astros starter Scott Kazmir for the game's first run. He would also drive home the game's final run just an inning later, this time on a ground out. The utility infielder's done a nice job in his relatively limited playing time, hitting .269/.306/.419 with three homers, 17 RBI and five steals over 160 at-bats. Friday, 9:43 pm
  • Lowrie can't manage hit in loss to Twins
Jed Lowrie went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Friday's loss to the Twins.

Advice: Lowrie failed to find traction against Kyle Gibson and the Twin bullpen. He's been dealing with a left thumb contusion over the past week, but the scuffles are nothing new. He's hit-less in his last 22 at-bats and now sports a .225/.329/.399 line with five homers and 17 RBI. Injuries have held him to just 41 games this season. Friday, 9:34 pm

  • Loney drives in run with double vs Volquez
James Loney went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in Friday's loss to the Royals.

Advice: Loney's RBI double in the second inning against Royals starter Edinson Volquez temporarily tied the score at 1-1. The Rays would go on to lose 3-2, dropping to 63-65 on the season. In 263 at-bats this season, the veteran first baseman is hitting .270/.311/.365 with four homers and 28 RBI. Friday, 7:56 pm
  • Cowart notches RBI single, steal in loss
Kaleb Cowart went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and a steal in Friday's loss to the Indians.

Advice: The single was just Cowart's fourth hit since he was called up on August 18. He was the 18th overall selection in the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft and hit .323/.395/.491 with six homers and 45 RBI over 62 games at Triple-A Salt Lake. As a 23-year-old, he still has a ways to go before we can truly determine what he'll be at the big league level. Friday, 7:00 pm
  • Ike Davis (hip) should be ready for spring
Athletics head trainer Nick Paparesta said Friday that Ike Davis (hip) should be fully recovered and ready for spring training.

Advice: Davis underwent successful surgery earlier in the month to repair his ailing left hip. He hit just .229/.301/.350 with three homers and 20 RBI in 214 at-bats in his first season with the Athletics. Friday, 5:00 pm

  • Chris Johnson (infection) to return Tuesday
Chris Johnson (infection) will be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday.

    15-Day DL

  • Yunel Escobar (hand) still out on Friday
Yunel Escobar (hand) is out of the Nationals' lineup Friday.

Advice: Escobar had to exit Thursday's contest after being hit on the right hand by a pitch. X-rays came back clean, but he remains sore. Anthony Rendon is handling third base, while Trea Turner is getting his first major league start at second. Friday, 1:36 pm
  • Morneau (concussion) set for rehab assignment
Justin Morneau (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A New Britain on Friday.

Advice: Morneau hasn't played since mid-May due to a concussion and a cervical neck sprain, but he's been slowly but surely progressing of late and is ready to test things out in game action. He'll play in three contests for New Britain before being re-evaluated. It's not clear whether the Rockies have a target date for Morneau's return. Friday, 11:14 am

  • Cervelli (feet) triples, scores in return
Francisco Cervelli (feet) tripled and scored a run in his return to action Thursday.

Advice: Cervelli sat out Wednesday's game after injuring both of his feet Tuesday, but he'll be fine. He's sporting a nifty .306/.374/.428 batting line for the Bucs. Friday, 5:36 am
  • Yunel Escobar (hand) listed as day-to-day
Yunel Escobar is considered day-to-day after X-rays on his hand came back negative late Thursday.

Advice: He was lifted from Thursday's game after being drilled by a pitch on his right hand. He was fortunate to avoid any fractures though and should be able to return to the lineup in a day or two once the swelling subsides. Thursday, 7:29 pm
  • Yunel Escobar leaves after hit by pitch
Yunel Escobar was removed from Thursday's game against the Padres after being hit by a pitch on his right hand.

Advice: He will presumably head for X-rays to rule out any structural damage. Danny Escobar replaced him and would see increased action if Escobar is forced to miss an extended period of time. Thursday, 6:01 pm
  • Loney drops appeal of one-game suspension
James Loney has dropped the appeal of his one-game suspension and will serve it Thursday night.

Advice: Loney was issued the punishment for making contact with home plate umpire Paul Nauert on Saturday after a called third strike. He probably wouldn't have been in the lineup anyway Thursday versus Twins lefty Tom Milone. Thursday, 12:49 pm
  • Francisco Cervelli (feet) sitting out Wed.
Francisco Cervelli (feet) is not in the Pirates' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: Cervelli fouled a ball off his right foot and jammed his left food during Tuesday's game. He's expected to be fine, but it's no surprise he's getting a breather in this one. Chris Stewart is behind the plate. Wednesday, 1:05 pm
  • Chris Johnson (infection) hits off tee
Chris Johnson (infection) hit balls off a tee on Monday.

Advice: Johnson has been on the shelf since a spider bite on his left thumb on August 14 became infected. He's had to have the infection drained twice. "I ended up having an infection and they had to treat it with antibiotics," said Johnson. "The last two days I've finally been able to swing the bat." Johnson should be ready to return when rosters expand. Wednesday, 6:21 am

  • Semien homers but A's fall to the Mariners
Marcus Semien went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, but the Athletics dropped Tuesday's game to the Mariners.

Advice: Semien drove in the middle two runs in the Athletics' four-run second inning, clubbing a two-run homer to left-center off of Mike Montgomery. It's his first home run in three weeks. The shortstop is batting a mediocre .253/.299/.391 with 11 home runs, 32 RBI, and 10 stolen bases on the year. Tuesday, 10:36 pm
    7:05 pm vs LAA
  • Loney has three hits, three RBI against Twins
James Loney went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's loss to the Twins.

Advice: Loney broke out of a 3-for-23 slide with the three-hit game. He had an RBI single in the second inning before smacking a two-run double in the third. Loney is hitting .267/.309/.361 through 72 games. Tuesday, 8:29 pm

Justin Bour went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored against the Pirates on Tuesday.

Advice: Bour knocked RBI doubles in the fourth and sixth innings against Pirates starter Charlie Morton. He's now got 14 doubles and 41 RBI on the year. The 27-year-old rookie has had his share of ups and downs in 2015, currently owning a .256/.330/.440 line in 93 games played. Tuesday, 7:24 pm
  • Lowrie (thumb) back in Tuesday's lineup
Jed Lowrie (thumb) is back in Tuesday's lineup against the Yankees.

  • Yunel Escobar (neck) in Tuesday's lineup
Yunel Escobar (neck) is back in Tuesday's lineup against the Padres.

Advice: Escobar hasn't played since leaving Friday's game with a hyperextended neck. With his return and Denard Span's activation from the DL, the Nationals have their full lineup together for the first time this season. Tuesday, 12:48 pm
  • Derek Norris (wrist) back in Tuesday's lineup
Derek Norris (wrist) is back in Tuesday's lineup against the Nationals.

Advice: Norris took a pitch off his wrist while catching during Saturday's game and sat out Sunday, but fortunately X-rays came back negative. He's batting seventh in his return to the lineup. Tuesday, 12:26 pm

  • Kaleb Cowart hits first home run
Kaleb Cowart hit his first major league home run Saturday off the Blue Jays' Marco Estrada.

Advice: It's Cowart's lone hit in 16 at-bats to date. We wouldn't be too optimistic about it being a sign of things to come. Aug 22, 10:15 pm
  • Ike Davis transferred to 60-day disabled list
Athletics transferred 1B Ike Davis from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The 28-year-old struggled in his first year with Oakland, hitting just .229 with three homers over 74 appearances. Mark Canha has been filling in at first base. Aug 22, 2:12 pm

  • Kaleb Cowart still hitless since callup
Kaleb Cowart went 0-for-3 on Friday and has opened his big-league career 0-for-13 with six strikeouts.

Advice: It's no surprise that Cowart is looking overmatched against big-league pitching. It's also something that doesn't figure to change right away. The Angels really should have stuck with Conor Gillaspie at third base and hoped for the best. Aug 21, 10:42 pm
  • Ike Davis to undergo season-ending surgery
Ike Davis will undergo season-ending surgery on his left hip.

Advice: Obviously the results of his MRI were not favorable and the slugger will be forced to go under the knife to repair his ailing hip. He should be fully recovered and ready to go for the beginning of the 2016 season. Aug 21, 4:35 pm
