      The Cubs placed Assad on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right forearm extensor strain, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

      Advice: The injury has evidently been an issue for Assad off and on for about two weeks, per Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, which could help explain why he's stumbled in June with a 5.49 ERA after entering the month with a 2.27 mark.       Gallen (hamstring) could be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Saturday against Oakland if he recovers well from Thursday's bullpen session, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

      Advice: Thursday's bullpen session will be the second one thrown by Gallen, who also has a couple of simulated games under his belt since he landed on the injured list.       Stone (9-2) picked up the win over the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing four hits and no walks in a complete-game shutout while striking out seven.

      Advice: Stone was spectacular Wednesday, matching his season high with seven strikeouts en route to recording the first complete game of his major-league career. The right-hander retired the side in order in five of his nine frames and didn't allow a runner to reach second base outside of a leadoff double from Gavin Sheets to open the second. Stone has now won each of his last five decisions (spanning six starts) and has also posted at least six strikeouts in five of his last six outings.       Rodriguez (9-3) earned the win over Cleveland on Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four batters over seven innings.

      Advice: Rodriguez was tagged for seven runs over five innings against Houston during his previous trip to the mound, but he was much better Wednesday, notching his seventh quality start of the campaign and his ninth victory. The right-hander did give up two home runs, but both were of the solo variety, and they accounted for the only scores the Guardians managed against him. Rodriguez has been good at limiting long balls this season -- Wednesday marked just the second time he has allowed multiple homers -- and he's completed at least five frames in all but one of his 14 starts.       Gavin Stone tossed a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts in a win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

      Advice: Stone made perhaps his best start of his career Wednesday against the White Sox, going a career-high nine scoreless innings for his first complete-game shutout. He scattered four hits and did not walk a batter, tossing 73-of-103 pitches for strikes with seven strikeouts. The 25-year-old right-hander has been outstanding on the season, posting a 2.73 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 70/25 K/BB ratio across 89 innings.     • Grayson Rodriguez goes seven strong in win
      Grayson Rodriguez allowed two runs across seven innings in a 4-2 win over the Guardians. He struck out four without walking a batter.

      Advice: Rodriguez’s changeup was especially lethal in this one: dropping three inches more than his season average and forcing five swings and misses. He ended his day on a beautiful one low and out of the zone to Brayan Rocchio that got him through seven innings for the second time in three starts.     • Fans eight in no-decision
      Peterson came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 9-7 win over the Yankees, allowing one run on three hits and five walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out eight.

      Advice: Despite being staked to a 6-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning, Peterson wasn't efficient enough to qualify for his fourth straight win as he needed 103 pitches (62 strikes) to record his 13 outs. The southpaw has walked multiple batters in four straight outings but has mostly been able to limit the damage, and he'll take a 3.67 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 20:13 K:BB through 27 innings into his next start, which is currently scheduled to come on the road early next week against the Nationals.       Gallen (hamstring) threw 67 pitches in a simulated game Monday and will next have a bullpen session Thursday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: The Diamondbacks were preparing for Gallen to throw Monday, whether in a sim game or live batting practice, and decided on the sim game. He next heads to Chase Field on Thursday for a bullpen session, which will be caught by Gabriel Moreno, who is nursing a sprained left thumb.       Gomber (1-5) took the loss Tuesday against Houston, allowing five runs on eight hits and no walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out four.

      Advice: All five runs against Gomber came in the first inning, when he allowed four consecutive singles to open the frame as part of a six-hit inning that included a pair of stolen bases. However, the 30-year-old settled in after the nightmare first frame, allowing just two baserunners afterward before a Jake Meyers double prompted Colorado to remove Gomber after 89 pitches. Gomber has endured a rough June, yielding at least three runs in all five starts and completing only six innings once. He owns a 9.39 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 23.0 innings during the month.
