  • Volquez interested in staying with Pirates
Edinson Volquez is interested in re-signing with the Pirates.

Advice: Volquez has rebounded with a 3.15 ERA and 130/70 K/BB ratio in 185 2/3 innings this season and credits the Pirates' coaches for his turnaround, so it makes sense that he's open to staying, but he would also like to parlay his success into a multi-year contract. "You always want to sign for more than one year," said Volquez. "Especially now that I'm 31 years old, I'd like to sign with someone for two or three years and stay a little bit longer." • Haren's player option for 2015 is triggered
Dan Haren's $10 million player option for 2015 was triggered during Monday's start against the Giants.

Advice: Haren got there by crossing the 180-inning threshold for the season, which also secured him a $500,000 bonus. The veteran right-hander will make a decision on whether to accept the option after the season. Rotoworld.com

  • Escobar (shoulder) comes off bench for single
Eduardo Escobar (shoulder) came off the bench to hit a single Monday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Escobar hadn't played since last Tuesday due to a jammed right shoulder, but he entered the game as a pinch-runner in the seventh and stuck around to hit a single in the ninth. He should be back in the lineup soon. Rotoworld.com

  • OF Blanco comes up big in 13-inning victory
Gregor Blanco finished 2-for-7 with a double, homer, two RBI and two runs scored in Monday's easy 13-inning 5-2 versus the Dodgers.

Advice: Blanco's corked a 419-foot shot off Dan Haren to begin the game. He wouldn't drive in another run for 12 more innings, when his double ended up plating two; the play ended when Blanco was gunned down trying to go for third. Blanco has been a usable if unspectacular mixed league player since late August. Rotoworld.com

  • Crawford goes deep for the 8th time in 2014
Carl Crawford hit a solo homer in Monday's game against the Giants.

Advice: Crawford finished 1-for-5. He's hit safely in his last four games to continue a monster September. The veteran outfielder is 24-for-58 (.414) with six doubles, a triple, three homers and 14 RBI this month. Overall, he's slashing .290/.327/.419. Rotoworld.com

  • Haren works 7 frames in ND versus the Giants
Dan Haren yielded two runs -- one earned -- in seven innings in a no-decision versus the Giants Monday.

Advice: He was coming off an additional day of rest, as Los Angeles decided to give Jamey Wright a spot start in Sunday's series finale at Chicago so Haren could take the ball against the hated Giants instead. Haren reversed a troubling trend: Dodgers' starters came into tonight in a terrible funk, having posted a 8.88 ERA over 25 1/3 innings while failing to work five innings even once in the last seven games. The bullpen (5.97 ERA) wasn't much better during that stretch. Fortunately, both showed up tonight (well, until Kevin Correia was called up in the 13th, anyway). Haren (13-11, 4.03 ERA) welcomes the Rockies to Los Angeles on Saturday. Rotoworld.com

  • Peavy holds the Dodgers to 2 runs in 7 frames
Jake Peavy limited the Dodgers to two runs over seven innings in Monday's no-decision

Advice: Peavy struck out four and walked one. He was going for his career-high fifth consecutive victorious start. Peavy started his Giants' career 0-3 with a 4.82 ERA, but has gone 6-1 with a 1.47 ERA over his last eight starts since winning his first game of the season. Peavy (7-13, 3.78 ERA) has a nice matchup to close out the year when he hosts the Padres on Saturday. Rotoworld.com

  • Donaldson draws 3 walks in win over Angels
Josh Donaldson went 0-for-2 with three walks and a run scored in Monday's 8-4 win against the Angels.

Advice: He has reached base seven times across 11 plate appearances, and scored four runs, over the past 48 hours. He won't come close to matching the raw efficiency of last year's breakout season (.301/.384/.499), but Donaldson totes a solid .254/.341/.457 slash line and will reach the 100-RBI plateau if he can drive in three more by sundown on Sunday. His WAR (currently 7.1) isn't even going to finish one game below 2013's total of 8.0; the A's have a keeper. Rotoworld.com

  • Pujols' HR not enough for Angels versus A's
Albert Pujols went yard for the 28th time this season the Angels dropped an 8-4 decision to the A's on Monday.

Advice: Pujols' eighth-inning three-run blast off Evan Scribner inexplicably made it a game again; the Angels had two runners on down by four in the ninth inning before Oakland finally put them away. It was the veteran's second homer in the last three games. Along with the 28 homers, Pujols has knocked in 104 -- the 12th time he's exceeded 100 RBI in 14 seasons -- and slashed .274/.328/.472. He's on pace for 107 RBI, which would be his highest total since 2010. Rotoworld.com

  • Samardzija works 7 innings, allows 0 ER in W
Jeff Samardzija gave up one run -- zero earned -- in seven innings to beat the Angels 8-4 on Monday.

Advice: Samardzija whiffed three, issued zero free passes, and scattered five hits. The right-hander was probably wondering where all these runs had been over the last month. He had hurled 15 shutout innings over his past two starts and emerged with a pair of no-decisions. In fact, he had gone 0-2 in his last four starts despite a 1.50 ERA, receiving just five runs of support total. It's been that kind of season for the right-hander, who didn't have many offensive helpers on the Cubs either. Samardzija will get the ball in Texas on Saturday. Rotoworld.com

  • Wilson ripped for 6 runs (4 ER) in 2/3 inning
The wheels fell off of C.J. Wilson on Monday, as he surrendered six runs -- four earned -- in just 2/3 of an inning Monday in a loss to the A's.

Advice: Wilson only gave up two hits while throwing 35 pitches. Instead, he was done in by an inability to locate the plate from the very beginning. Wilson walked four, the first two of which forced home a run. You could be forgiven for being surprised that the veteran picked this game to bomb. He had been 5-0 with a 2.79 ERA in his last eight starts against the A's. Wilson fired seven shutout innings and yielded only one hit in Wednesday's 5-0 win over the Mariners, helping the Angels to clinch the AL West; he came into play today 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA over his last three starts. Wilson is currently scheduled to take the ball in Los Angeles' last regular season game on Sunday against the Mariners, though plans could change as playoffs machinations begin. Rotoworld.com

  • Quackenbush notches his 6th MLB save
Kevin Quackenbush pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season on Monday against the Rockies.

Advice: Since taking over closing duties from an injured Joaquin Benoit on August 20, Quackenbush has posted a 3.21 ERA across 14 innings. On the year, he's 6-for-7 in save situations with a 2.58 ERA, 1.09 ERA and 55/18 K/BB rate over 52 1/3 innings. Rotoworld.com

  • Morneau goes 2-for-4 with a double in loss
Justin Morneau finished 2-for-4 with a double in Monday's 1-0 loss versus the Padres.

Advice: Morneau was returning to the lineup after getting an off-day on Sunday. Morneau has been on fire, coming it this game batting .415 with nine RBI and 11 runs scored in his last 11 games. Consider Morneau a nice daily play during this series. He's 12-for-25 (.480) in eight games at Petco Park this season. He's generally a good daily play: Morneau leads the National League with a .320 average. Rotoworld.com

  • Stults pitches 6+ shutout innings vs. Rockies
Eric Stults shut out the Rockies over 6 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits, in Monday's 1-0 triumph.

Advice: Stults struck out five and walked one. In so doing, the left-hander managed to stay tied with Philadelphia's A.J. Burnett for the most losses in the majors (8-17). That isn't to say he's pitching poorly. On the contrary, Stults, who was 3-13 with a 5.22 on July 27, has gone 5-4 with a 2.90 ERA in his 10 starts since. Stults' final assignment of the season takes place in San Francisco on Saturday. Rotoworld.com

  • Matzek loses to Padres despite allowing 1 run
Tyler Matzek tossed six innings of one-run ball on Monday against the Padres.

Advice: Unfortunately, that run came in the first inning, and the Padres proceeded to slap nine consecutive zeroes across the Rockies. Colorado had been going for their longest winning streak (7) in 17 months. Matzek pitched well, striking out eight and walking one. He enjoys facing San Diego. In his last start against the Padres, on September 5, Matzek hurled a three-hitter in his first career complete game. He ends the season on a high note, going 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA in his last six starts. Overall, Matzek went 6-10 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 91/44 K/BB rate. Rotoworld.com

  • Domonic Brown (hand) able to pinch-hit
Domonic Brown (hand) struck out as a pinch-hitter in Sunday's loss to the Athletics.

Advice: Brown was left out of the starting lineup for a third straight game due to a right hand injury and will probably remain limited over the final week of the regular season. It's been a hugely disappointing summer for the 27-year-old outfielder, who's batting .236/.287/.355 with only 10 home runs in 138 games. Rotoworld.com

  • Donaldson crushes walk-off homer in 10th
Josh Donaldson came up big for the A's Sunday, hitting a two-run, walk-off homer in the 10th inning to defeat the Phillies 8-6.

Advice: Donaldson had singled twice and scored twice in the game prior to coming up with a man on in the 10th inning. He proceeded to take Phillies reliever Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez deep to send everyone home happy. Donaldson now has 28 home runs, 97 RBI and 89 runs scored this year. Three more RBI over the final week will represent Donaldson's first ever 100-RBI season. Rotoworld.com

  • Pujols has RBI single in loss to Rangers
Albert Pujols went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in Sunday's loss to the Rangers.

Advice: Pujols had one of the Angels' four hits in the game, and his run-scoring single in the sixth was the lone run the Halos mustered on the afternoon. It gave him 101 RBI on the year, the 12th time he's reached the 100-RBI plateau in his 14-year career. It has been a return to form all around this year for the 34-year-old. Rotoworld.com

  • Pujols belts 27th homer as Angels top TEX
Albert Pujols went yard for the 27th time this season the Angels handed the Rangers a loss on Saturday.

Advice: Pujols finished 3-for-4 on the evening. His fifth-inning shot was part of a five-run fifth inning in which the Angels bolted out to an 8-0 lead. It hasn't always been pretty, but Pujols has managed to put together a full, productive season. Along with the 27 homers, he's knocked in 100 and slashed .275/.329/.470. Rotoworld.com

  • Quackenbush escapes ninth with his 5th save
Kevin Quackenbush had his feet to the fire, but managed to escape the ninth inning with his fifth save as the Padres hung on to beat the Giants on Saturday.

Advice: Andrew Cashner was working on a shutout, but allowed a solo homer and a single before making his exit, and Quackenbush nearly dumped a vat of gasoline on the fire, allowing a two-out RBI single to Gregor Blanco to make it 3-2. Fortunately for the Padres, Quack was able to get Brandon Crawford to fly out to left to end the contest. The right-hander has picked up four saves in Joaquin Benoit's absence, and owns a 2.63 ERA on the season. Rotoworld.com

  • Volquez magnificent in a no-decision vs. MIL
Edinson Volquez was handed a no-decision Saturday despite tossing seven scoreless innings against the Brewers.

Advice: Following Saturday's outing, Volquez has managed to lower his ERA by 76 points since the beginning of August. The right-hander yielded three hits and three walks while striking out six in the effort. He'll take a 3.15 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and a 130/70 K/BB ratio into his final start of the season on Thursday in Atlanta against the Braves. Rotoworld.com
    Saturday, 7:47 pm
  • Carl Crawford not in Dodgers lineup Saturday
Carl Crawford is not in the Dodgers starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: He'll grab a seat in favor of Scott Van Slyke against opposing southpaw Felix Doubront. Look for Crawford to return to left field for Sunday's series finale. Rotoworld.com

  • Domonic Brown dealing with sprained hand
Domonic Brown was a late scratch to the Phillies starting lineup on Friday due to a sprained right hand.

Advice: He should be considered day-to-day for now, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the Phillies take things extremely cautiously with him down the stretch. The 27-year-old is hitting a disappointing .237/.288/.356 on the season with 10 homers and 61 RBI. Rotoworld.com
    Saturday, 5:50 am
  • Crawford not in Thursday's lineup
Carl Crawford is not in Thursday's lineup against the Cubs.

  • Samardzija works 8 shutout innings in ND
Jeff Samardzija shut out the Rangers for eight innings on Wednesday, striking out 10, but he was left with a no-decision when the bullpen imploded in a 6-1 loss.

Advice: A crushing loss for the A's, who gave up six runs in the top of the ninth inning against a 58-92 team. The heartbreaker allowed the Angels to clinch the AL West for the first time since 2009. As for Samardzija, he must feel like he's pitching for the Cubs again. He's hurled 15 shutout innings over his past two starts and emerged with a pair of no-decisions. Overall, he's 6-12 with a 2.98 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Rotoworld.com
    Wednesday, 10:51 pm
  • OF Brown has 2 hits in win agaisnt Padres
Domonic Brown went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the Phillies' win over the Padres on Wednesday.

Advice: It's been a long, lonely, treacherous season for the 2013 revelation. But he just finished off a solid series at Petco, going 4-for-11 (.363) with a homer and a steal. Hey, his owners will take whatever they can get at this point. Brown, slashing .234/.286/.353, is very likely playing out the string on his Phillies' career. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported earlier this month that the Phillies will look to trade Brown this winter. Rotoworld.com
    Wednesday, 10:37 pm
  • Stults doesn't reach the 5th inning in defeat
Eric Stults allowed four runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Phillies.

Advice: This outing was the norm earlier in the season, but odds are that it will annoy some fantasy owners perusing box scores online on Thursday morning. Consider: On July 27, the left-hander sat at 3-13 with a 5.22 ERA. Not even Rotoworld could have predicted what happened next: Stults went 4-3 with a 2.81 ERA in his next eight starts entering play today. If you decided to play with fire in the fantasy playoffs, you just got burned. The 34-year-old hosts the Rockies in a decent matchup on Tuesday. Rotoworld.com

  • Pujols goes 0-for-4 with 2 strikeouts
Albert Pujols finished 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in Wednesday's 5-0 win against the Mariners.

Advice: Pujols returned to the lineup yesterday after leaving Monday's game early due to a left hamstring cramp. The veteran went 1-for-3 on Tuesday and cashed in RBI No. 98. He'd plated 15 runners over his last 12 games coming into play today. Pujols retains a solid .272/.326/.465 slash line. Rotoworld.com

  • Wilson gives up 1 hit over 7 shutout frames
C.J. Wilson fired seven shutout innings and yielded only one hit in Wednesday's 5-0 win over the Mariners.

Advice: The Angels magic number to win the AL West has dropped to 1. Wilson whiffed seven and walked three in this gem, the lefty's third straight victory, a trick he pulled off for the first time this season. You shouldn't take that to mean he'd pitched particularly well prior to tonight, however, as Wilson allowed six runs (five earned) over 11 1/3 frames in the first two wins but received 23 runs of support. He didn't need much help tonight. Now 13-9 with a 4.42 ERA, Wilson has a pivotal matchup against the A's on deck. Rotoworld.com

  • Morneau drives in six as Rockies rout Dodgers
Justin Morneau finished 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBI in Wednesday's 16-2 rout of the Dodgers.

Advice: Colorado absolutely pounded Dodgers spot starter Carlos Frias, with Morneau kicking off the fun on a three-run blast in the bottom of the first inning. He also hit a two-run single to finish off the scoring in that eight-run opening frame before doubling in the bottom of the fourth and collecting his sixth RBI of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. The veteran first baseman has an excellent .320/.363/.497 batting line with 16 home runs and 79 RBI in 127 games this season. Rotoworld.com

  • Peavy holds the Snakes to 1 run in 7+ frames
Jake Peavy worked 7 2/3 innings and allowed only one run in Tuesday's victory over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Peavy, who struck out four and walked one, is on fire right now. His Giants tenure didn't start out the best, you may recall. He went 0-3 with a 4.82 ERA and received only six runs of support total in his first three starts with San Francisco, but the right-hander came into play today 5-1 with a 1.12 ERA over his last six starts, getting an average of 6.92 runs per game of support. He only got two runs tonight, but that turned out to be the perfect number. Peavy, who has a 2.16 ERA overall with the Giants, has a big road start on deck against the Dodgers. Rotoworld.com

  • Morneau has two hits, scores twice vs. LAD
Justin Morneau went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the Rockies' win over the Dodgers Tuesday.

Advice: Morneau drove in a run with a groundout in the first inning, singling and scoring in the sixth. He later doubled and scored in the eighth as well, his first double since late August as he's managed an intercostal injury. Morneau is looking to finish strong after a really nice rebound year for the 33-year-old, who is hitting .316/.361/.486 with 73 RBI. Rotoworld.com

  • Haren touched for five runs in loss to Rox
Dan Haren allowed five runs over five innings in a loss to the Rockies on Tuesday.

Advice: Haren actually gave up just four hits, but the Rockies managed to turn them into five runs. The line looks bad, but it was Haren's first loss since August 17, and the right-hander is still 13-11 with a 4.14 ERA after a string of above-average starts. Haren will try to get back in the win column at the Cubs on Sunday. Rotoworld.com
    Tuesday, 9:03 pm
  • Matzek scatters 11 hits in win over Dodgers
Tyler Matzek surrendered 11 hits but managed to hold the Dodgers to two runs over 5 1/3 innings in a win Tuesday.

Advice: Matzek managed to escape danger until the sixth inning, when four hits and a run spelled the end of his night. The left-hander struck out six before exiting. It wasn't his strongest outing, but the win was his fourth in his last five starts to bring his record to 6-10. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start since August 13. Matzek will look to keep that going Sunday against the Diamondbacks. Rotoworld.com

  • Pujols leaves game with hamstring cramp
Albert Pujols left Monday's game against the Mariners with a left hamstring cramp.

Advice: Pujols cleared the bases with a double in the third inning but grabbed his hamstring on the way into second base. The good news is that the Angels are calling it a cramp, so it sounds like a day-to-day situation. Rotoworld.com

  • Morneau (intercostal) back in Monday's lineup
Justin Morneau (intercostal) is back in Monday's lineup against the Dodgers.

Advice: Morneau exited Friday's game with left intercostal soreness, but it's not a major concern. The veteran first baseman is hitting .315 on the year, just two points behind Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison for the National League lead. Rotoworld.com
    Monday, 1:46 pm
  • Edinson Volquez earns 12th win against Cubs
Edinson Volquez gave up three runs -- one earned -- over seven innings in Sunday's win over the Cubs.

Advice: Volquez fell in a hole early after an error led to two Cubs runs in the second inning. He gave up another in the third, but he settled down to keep them off the board after that. He walked five, an issue for Volquez his entire career, while striking out five as well. The win was his 12th of the year, his highest single-season total since 2008. Volquez will take on the Brewers on Saturday. Rotoworld.com
    Sep 14, 1:32 pm
  • Morneau (intercostal) expected to return soon
Justin Morneau (intercostal) is expected to return to the lineup soon.

Advice: Morneau exited Friday's game with what the Rockies called left intercostal soreness, but trainer Keith Dugger admitted Saturday that the club was "not 100 percent sure it's an intercostal (injury). It's kind of sore behind his left lat. He just has a little soreness. It's not a huge (injury). It's not like an oblique type of soreness. We aren't overly concerned, but we want to make sure he's right before we send him out there." Ben Paulsen started at first base Saturday and should remain there until Morneau is ready. Rotoworld.com

  • Domonic Brown returns to lineup with two hits
Domonic Brown (shoulder) returned to action on Friday, going 2-for-4 in an extra-inning victory over the Marlins.

Advice: Brown left Wednesday's game with a left shoulder contusion sustained after diving for a ball in the outfield, then sat out Thursday's contest as a precautionary measure. After a breakout 2013 season, the 2014 campaign hasn't been as kind to the 27-year-old outfielder as he's slashing just .233/.285/.349 with nine homers and 59 RBI. Rotoworld.com

  • C.J. Wilson strikes out six in win
C.J. Wilson surrendered three runs -- two earned -- in five innings Friday in a victory over the Astros.

Advice: Wilson walked three, but two of those were intentional free passes to Chris Carter. He struck out six. Wilson really hasn't turned in a dominant effort in months, but with the way the Angels offense is clicking, he hasn't needed to. He's currently 12-9 despite a 4.61 ERA. Rotoworld.com

  • Kevin Quackenbush records thrid save
Kevin Quackenbush worked around two ninth-inning singles to pick up his third save Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: With Joaquin Benoit's return date still up in the air, Quackenbush is the favorite for saves in the San Diego pen. Of course, the team isn't really generating many save chances anyway. Tonight was Quackenbush's first opportunity since Sept. 1. Rotoworld.com

Justin Morneau was removed from Friday's game against the Cardinals due to left side intercostal soreness.

Advice: Morneau is considered day-to-day and should return to the Rockies lineup at some point over the weekend. He is enjoying a fine season at the dish, slashing .315/.359/.485 with 15 homers and 72 RBI in 124 contests. Rotoworld.com
