Advice: Pfaadt allowed the leadoff man to reach base in two of his first three innings of work, but lucked out with double play balls on each occasion and managed to escape each frame unscathed. He would then surrender an RBI single to Mickey Moniak in the fourth before going on to log his seventh quality start of the campaign. The right-hander has allowed two or fewer runs in three of his last six outings, going 2-2 over that stretch. He's also recorded at least seven strikeouts in four of his last six starts. Brandon Pfaadt struck out eight while limiting the Angels to one run in six innings to get a win Thursday.

Advice: Pfaadt did have some control issues with three walks and 62-of-108 pitches landing for strikes, but he was able to work out of jams thanks to the punchouts. It’s a much improved effort from last weekend when he gave up nine hits and five runs against San Diego. Pfaadt has shown almost zero consistency in his MLB career — at least not in a positive way — but the stuff is here for him to be a successful fantasy option. Nolan Gorman finished 0-for-4 as the Cardinals’ cleanup man Thursday against the Pirates.

Advice: Gorman is 3-for-31 in his last eight games, putting him back down to .215/.297/.463 for the season. That’s still a pretty good line in the current offensive climate, but he’d be better cast as a No. 6 hitter. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:57 pm

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Thursday that Nootbaar (oblique) continues to take part in "rotational work" and could resume swinging a bat this weekend, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The Cardinals will presumably ease Nootbaar into swinging by having him hit off a tee or hit soft-toss throws before he eventually gains clearance to hit against higher-velocity pitching. In addition to being able to hit without discomfort, Nootbaar, who has been on the injured list since May 31 with a left oblique strain, will also need to prove that the injury doesn't compromise him when he runs the bases or plays the outfield. He still appears to be at least a couple weeks away from being a realistic option to rejoin the Cardinals, and Nootbaar will presumably need to go out on a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated. Soler went 2-for-2 with two walks and one run scored in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Astros.

Advice: Soler has found some success at the plate in June, going 11-for-37 (.297) over 10 contests this month. He's also drawn four walks over his last three games, though his 9.6 percent walk rate is still his lowest since 2015. While it's a positive to see the designated hitter make more consistent contact, he's still struggling to hit for power. He's batting .217 with a .661 OPS, seven home runs, 18 RBI, 26 runs scored, nine doubles and no stolen bases over 56 games this season.
