    • Evan Gattis hit his ninth home run of the season in the Braves' late win over the Twins on Tuesday.
Advice: It was another pinch-hit home run and it sent the game to extra innings. Gattis still has a weak .302 on-base percentage and doesn't play enough anymore to carry relevance in mixed fantasy leagues, but he should remain a dangerous bat off the Atlanta bench all year.

    • Santiago Casilla will have the cyst on his right knee examined by a specialist on Wednesday.
Advice: Casilla has dealt with the cyst since last season, and a brace that he had been wearing wasn't working. He'll receive another opinion on Wednesday to see if there's another way to combat the issue.

    • Cubs claimed RHP Eduardo Sanchez off waivers from the Cardinals; assigned him to Triple-A Iowa.
Advice: Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch speculates that Sanchez was cleared from the Cardinals' 40-man roster in order to make room for Tyler Lyons. Either way, the Cubs were quick to pounce. The 24-year-old has struggled with his control, but he has a big arm and has displayed the ability to get swings-and-misses at the big league level. He could be a useful bullpen piece for Chicago.

    • Jose Fernandez allowed just one run over five innings Tuesday, taking a no-decision as the Marlins lost to the Phillies.
Advice: A Delmon Young solo homer was the only damage done to Fernandez on the night, but his offense let him down once again. The 20-year-old owns a respectable 2-2 record and 3.31 ERA, all things considered, and he seems to be continuing to get better as the season goes on. His next start is scheduled for Monday against the Rays.

    • Phillies placed C Carlos Ruiz on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 20, with a right hamstring strain.
Advice: Ruiz was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his hamstring and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. It's a tough blow for the Phillies, who just got Ruiz back from his suspension less than one month ago. Erik Kratz and Humberto Quintero will fill in behind the plate once again.

    • Carlos Ruiz was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his right hamstring and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.
Advice: Tough break for Ruiz, who had a late start to the season following his 25-game suspension. The injury will likely leave him on the shelf until mid-to-late June. He'll be placed on the disabled list Tuesday to make room for Tyler Cloyd on the roster. Erik Kratz and Humberto Quintero will fill in behind the late for now.

    • Carlos Ruiz went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly in Friday's 5-3 win over the Reds.
Advice: The Reds tied things up on a solo homer by Joey Votto in the top of the eighth inning, but the Phillies stormed right back with two runs thanks to a bases-loaded error by Brandon Phillips and the sacrifice fly by Ruiz. "Chooch" has been slow to get going since returning from his 25-game Adderall suspension, batting just .240/.291/.280 through 15 games. There are better options at catcher right now in shallow mixed leagues.

    • Pitching exclusively out of the bullpen, Josh Collmenter is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.95 WHIP over 22 innings.
Advice: Last year's horrific April that cost him a rotation spot seems like a distant memory. Collmenter finished with a 2.13 ERA in 72 innings (seven starts, 17 relief appearances) over the final five months in 2012 and has carried that success into a new season. Of particular interest is his strikeout and K/BB rate, both improved over last year, which were both improvements over 2010's fifth-place-ROY-voting campaign.

    • Andy Dirks went 2-for-5 with a home run as the Tigers beat the Indians on Tuesday.
Advice: The homer was Dirks' fifth, and he drove in two runs on the night. What's more, the outfielder batted leadoff ahead of Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera. It's likely temporary until Austin Jackson returns, but if Dirks can continue to get on base he should be in line to score plenty of runs in his new lineup spot.

    • Chris Dickerson had an infield single and a pair of solo homers in Tuesday's win over the Yankees.
Advice: Phil Hughes was the victim of both bombs, serving up the dingers in the third and fifth innings. Dickerson and Nate McLouth were the offensive heroes for the O's, as McLouth slugged a walk-off solo shot in the 10th to break the team's six-game losing streak. Dickerson has seen a little more playing time of late and is now batting .371 over 15 games.

    • Chris Dickerson smashed a three-run homer in a losing effort against the Rays on Friday.
Advice: After falling behind 12-4 early in the game, Dickerson's bomb off Kyle Farnsworth capped off a six-run eighth inning that pulled the O's to within 12-10. Unfortunately for them, that's as close as they'd come. The veteran outfielder has done a nice job in limited time, hitting .320/.346/.520 with a homer and six RBI in his first 25 at-bats.

    • Alex Cobb went 6 1/3 innings, allowing just one run, as the Rays beat the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Advice: Cobb had a bit of a strange game, as he allowed just a solo home run to Colby Rasmus but only struck out two batters on the outing. Still, it was effective enough to pick up his fifth win of the season, and he's now got a 2.73 ERA through nine starts. His next start, Monday against the Marlins, sets up very nicely for the 25-year-old.

    • Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times speculates that Joe Blanton could lose his rotation spot when Jered Weaver returns from the disabled list.
Advice: Weaver will make what could be his final extended spring training appearance on Wednesday, which is the same day Blanton is scheduled to start. It doesn't necessarily mean Blanton is the most vulnerable, but it would hardly be a surprise if he's given the boot considering his 0-7 record, 6.62 ERA and 1.97 WHIP. It was the second consecutive start in which Miller labored and was pulled after 5 2/3 innings, tallying 96 pitches against the Mets on Wednesday and 107 this evening. • Zach Duke was rocked for four runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Giants on Monday.
Advice: Duke struck out one and didn't walk a batter. His most impressive feat of the evening was logging one of the three hits off Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong. Duke, making his first start of the season as a fill-in for Ross Detwiler (lower back), didn't acquit himself well. Though he kept the ball in the strike zone and only allowed one extra-base hit, San Francisco was fooled by none of the offered slop. Duke will presumably now return to the bullpen, though his 8.84 ERA and 1.80 WHIP may not be long for Washington's roster.

    • When asked prior to Tuesday's game who his closer is, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly replied, "I don't know. We'll see."
Advice: Kenley Jansen seemed to be close to overtaking Brandon League for the job, but he then allowed two runs in back-to-back games over the weekend. Mattingly indicated that he'd like to use League in the role, saying he'd "really like to see the bullpen get its confidence back and some semblance of order and get the guys in the roles we designed." Jansen has out-pitched League all season until the last few days and is probably the favorite for the job over the long run. The situation is a headache for fantasy owners.

    • Huston Street notched his 11th save Monday by tossing a perfect ninth as the Padres beat the Cardinals 4-2.
Advice: This was Street's first perfect complete inning since May 8 against the Marlins. Street has been uncharacteristically wild this season and that has led to an 0-3 record, 4.19 ERA and 1.24 WHIP (19 points above his career mark). If Street can improve upon his 13/8 K/BB rate (over 20 appearances), he'll have another good season as San Diego's stopper. If he doesn't iron out his control issues, it could be a long year. Street's stuff simply isn't good enough (he's allowed six homers in 2013) to compensate for extra base runners.
