  • Kang (shoulder) continuing rehab in Indy
Jung Ho Kang (shoulder) has been sent to Triple-A Indianapolis to continue his rehab.

Advice: Kang has been cleared to take batting practice and field ground balls, but he isn't ready to begin a minor league rehab assignment. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said the decision to send him to Indianapolis over staying with the team for their series against the Cubs did not have anything to do with his sexual assault case, which is still being investigated by Chicago police. It's unclear when he'll be ready to return from the disabled list. Today, 7:48 am

  • Javier Baez finishes 4-for-6
Javier Baez had four hits in six at-bats in Monday's 13-inning game.

Advice: He was twice thrown out at home plate, though neither was a miscue on his part. Baez entered the night with a .197/.227/.296 line in 71 at-bats during August. Still, his glove has been earning him a lot of playing time. Yesterday, 10:25 pm

  • Max Muncy goes hitless in loss
Max Muncy grounded into a double play, struck out and walked Monday against the Astros.

Advice: Muncy was primarily a first baseman in the minors and never played a game at second base prior to this year, yet he's been starting pretty regularly at second base for the A's this month. It's not his bat keeping him in the lineup; he's hitting .189 with just four extra-base hits in 110 at-bats (though he has walked 16 times). Muncy doesn't have the bat to play first base in the majors, and it's highly unlikely that he'll cut it as a second baseman. It'd seem to make more sense for the A's to give Arismendy Alcantara a long look there in September, though it remains to be seen if they will. Yesterday, 8:18 pm

  • Reyes doubles, scores run against Marlins
Jose Reyes went 1-for-5 with a double and a run scored Monday against the Marlins.

Advice: Reyes doubled to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning and moved over to third base after a fly out by Alejandro De Aza. He then scored the tying run after A.J. Ramos uncorked a wild pitch. Reyes collided with Ramos during the play at the plate, but fortunately for the short-handed Mets, he was able to stay in the ballgame. The 33-year-old is batting .281/.329/.474 with 15 extra-base hits (including four homers), 13 RBI, six steals, and 23 runs scored through 32 games. Yesterday, 8:15 pm

  • Tyler Saladino cranks eighth home run
Tyler Saladino had a two-RBI single and a solo homer in Monday's loss to the Tigers.

Advice: Saladino was the White Sox' offense in this one, as his single put the White Sox ahead in the fourth and his home run put them ahead in the seventh. Unfortunately for him and the Pale Hose, Jarrod Saltalamacchia put the Tigers back up for good with a homer in the eighth. Saladino has settled in as the White Sox' regular second baseman with Brett Lawrie banged up. Yesterday, 8:04 pm

  • Donaldson homers again in win over Orioles
Josh Donaldson slugged a solo homer and drew a walk in Monday’s win over the Orioles.

Advice: Not quite a three-homer game like Sunday, but it will do. Donaldson has slugged six homers over his last five games, which gives him 34 for the year. With a .294/.407/.582 batting line, he’s picking up momentum as a potential repeat winner of the AL MVP Award. Yesterday, 6:45 pm
  • Escobar (concussion) cleared for activity
Yunel Escobar (concussion) has been cleared for baseball activities.

Advice: Escobar was placed on the 7-day concussion after fouling a ball off his face on August 19. The Angels anticipate activating him on Friday in Seattle. Yesterday, 4:47 pm

  • Headley in Monday's lineup vs. Royals
Chase Headley is in Monday's lineup against the Royals.

Advice: Ronald Torreyes started all three games at third base over the weekend, but Headley is back in there Monday and will bat seventh against Dillon Gee. Headley will likely continue to lose playing time if Torreyes continues to play well. Yesterday, 2:25 pm
  • Justin Turner not in Monday's lineup vs. COL
Justin Turner is not in Monday's lineup against the Rockies.

Advice: Turner will sit for the series opener at Coors Field, which is unfortunate news for fantasy owners who were excited about the matchup. Rob Segedin is getting the start at third base and will bat eighth against Jon Gray. Yesterday, 2:14 pm
  • La Stella to be called up this week
Tommy La Stella will be among the Cubs' September call-ups this week.

Advice: La Stella initially refused to report to Triple-A Iowa following his demotion late last month -- and was even placed on the temporary inactive list for a stretch -- but he finally came around to the idea and has been playing regularly between second base and third base in Triple-A. The 27-year-old was batting .295/.388/.457 at the time of his demotion and is capable of being a useful bench piece down the stretch. Yesterday, 2:10 pm

  • Yulieski Gurriel starting at 3B on Monday
Yulieski Gurriel will start at third base for Monday's game against the Athletics.

Advice: It will be his first action in the field since joining the Astros. Gurriel is 5-for-14 (.357) with two doubles and two RBI through his first six games in the majors. Alex Bregman will slide into the DH spot on Monday. Yesterday, 1:20 pm
  • Castellanos (hand) played catch on Monday
Nick Castellanos (hand) played catch Monday for the first time since landing on the disabled list.

Advice: But he can only receive soft throws at this point and isn't close to hitting. Castellanos suffered a broken hand on August 6 when he was struck by a Logan Verrett pitch. He'll try to make it back by mid-September, but it might be more like late September. Yesterday, 12:56 pm

  • Tomas belts 27th homer to lead Diamondbacks
Yasmany Tomas belted his 27th home run of the year on Sunday, powering the Diamondbacks in an 11-2 thrashing of the Reds.

Advice: Tomas clubbed his three-run homer in the sixth inning, increasing the D'Backs advantage to 9-2. What's even more impressive, is they did the thrashing without Paul Goldschmidt and Jean Segura in the lineup on Sunday. Tomas finished the afternoon 1-for-2 and is now slashing .264/.309/.517 with the aforementioned 27 homers and 64 RBI. Sunday, 7:00 pm

  • Jefry Marte homers, drives in three vs. DET
Jefry Marte went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and three total RBI in Sunday's win over the Tigers.

Advice: Marte launched a two-run home run off Anibal Sanchez in the fifth inning and came through with a sacrifice fly just one frame later. He just returned to the Angels on Friday after being away from the team to handle a personal matter earlier in the week. For the season, the 25-year-old first baseman is working to a .243/.286/.453 triple-slash with 10 homers and 30 RBI over 181 at-bats. Sunday, 2:38 pm

  • Donaldson demolishes Twins with three homers
Josh Donaldson put on a fireworks show in Sunday's 9-6 win over the Twins, socking a trio of home runs and finishing with four RBI.

Advice: Donaldson cracked a solo home run off Kyle Gibson in the third inning. He would homer again -- this time a two-run shot -- in the seventh inning before polishing off his impressive power showing with a final solo tater in the eighth. The reigning AL MVP has now cracked 33 home runs and driven in 91. He can pair those counting stats with a strong .294/.407/.578 triple-slash over 476 at-bats. Sunday, 1:33 pm
  • Escobar (concussion) hopes to resume activity
Yunel Escobar (concussion) is hoping to resume baseball activities on Monday.

  • Tomas goes 1-for-3 as Diamondbacks get smoked
Yasmany Tomas collected one of only four Diamondbacks hits in a beat-down by the Reds on Saturday.

Advice: The good news is Tomas was on the field for the whole game in a blowout, which is a strong sign he is fully recovered from his recent back injury. He is batting .263/.308/.510 with 26 home runs and 61 RBI. He has taken large strides this year following a very disappointing rookie season after signing a big-money deal out of Cuba. Saturday, 8:05 pm

  • Mets recall T.J. Rivera from Triple-A Vegas
Mets recalled INF T.J. Rivera from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Advice: Rivera probably didn't even have time to unpack his bags after being sent down on Friday. Now he's on his way back to the major leagues where he'll absorb the roster spot left by Justin Ruggiano, who was placed on the disabled list with left shoulder discomfort. Traditionally employed as a utility infielder, Rivera could see time in the outfield during Ruggiano's absence. Saturday, 1:19 pm

  • Donaldson slugs home run No. 30
Josh Donaldson was 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored Friday versus the Twins.

Advice: Donaldson has now homered in back-to-back games, which brings his total to 30 for the year. He would need a monster September to come close to his home run and RBI totals from last season, but his .401 on-base percentage and .958 OPS are better than his MVP campaign. Friday, 8:16 pm
  • Headley socks two-run homer in win
Chase Headley finished 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and two runs scored against the Orioles on Friday.

Advice: After a miserable April, Headley picked things up through the end of July, but he was hitting just .220/.313/.356 this month coming into Friday’s action. It’s worth noting that he was dealing with tendinitis in his left Achilles during that time, but he now has two homers in his last four games. Perhaps he’s turning the corner. Friday, 7:18 pm
  • Gurriel (hamstring) returns to Astros' lineup
Yulieski Gurriel (hamstring) is back in the Astros' lineup Friday.

Advice: It's his first start since Sunday, when he exited his first game with the 'Stros with a tight right hamstring. Gurriel is in the designated hitter spot and batting sixth against Drew Smyly and the Rays. Friday, 2:08 pm
  • T.J. Rivera optioned to Triple-A
Mets optioned INF T.J. Rivera to Triple-A Las Vegas.

  • Yasmany Tomas (back) enters in double switch
Yasmany Tomas (back) entered Thursday's game against the Braves in a double switch and remained in to receive two plate appearances.

Advice: Tomas missed a second straight start with mid-back stiffness, but that he was able to play nearly half of Thursday's game was obviously a good sign. Expect him to be in the lineup Friday. Friday, 5:19 am
    7:15 pm @SF
  • Jefry Marte (personal) to return on Friday
Jefry Marte (personal) will join the Angels Friday in Detroit.

Advice: Marte missed the club's series against the Blue Jays while tending to a personal matter. The 25-year-old has been a jack of all trades this season, splitting time between left field and both corner infield spots. He's hit a little bit too with nine homers and 27 RBI over 176 at-bats for the Halos. Thursday, 3:05 pm

  • Gurriel (hamstring) lines out as pinch-hitter
Yulieski Gurriel (hamstring) lined out as a pinch-hitter on Wednesday against the Pirates.

Advice: Gurriel was held out of the Astros' starting lineup for the third straight game due to tightness in his right hamstring. It's something he came down with in his major league debut Sunday versus the Orioles. Gurriel should be ready to rock for the opening of a three-game weekend series Friday night against the Rays. Thursday, 5:55 am
  • Saladino (back) singles, steals base
Tyler Saladino (back) singled in three at-bats and stole a base on Wednesday.

Advice: Saladino had missed four straight games due to back soreness. It obviously wasn't anything too serious. He's hitting .258/.295/.385 with 10 steals in 70 games this season as a utilityman for the White Sox. Thursday, 5:51 am
    Bot 5, 3-2 @Det
  • Justin Turner hits 24th homer
Justin Turner went 2-for-3 and homered to account for the only run in the Dodgers' win over the Giants on Wednesday.

Advice: Turner is up to 24 homers in 485 plate appearances this year. For the Mets in 2011, he had four homers in 487 plate appearances. Legitimately one of the NL's best players the last three years, Turner is going to be a fascinating free agent this winter. Wednesday, 10:07 pm
  • Yasmany Tomas (back) out of Wednesday lineup
Yasmany Tomas (back) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Braves.

Advice: Tomas was forced out of Tuesday's to the Braves loss due to mid-back stiffness. While the Diamondbacks don't believe this is a serious injury, they are giving him Wednesday off to rest up. Brandon Drury will man right field in his place while batting eighth, but Tomas will be available to pinch-hit off the bench. Wednesday, 3:44 pm
    7:15 pm @SF
  • Kang (shoulder) playing catch, fielding balls
Jung Ho Kang (shoulder) has begun playing catch and fielding grounders.

Advice: But he hasn't been cleared to swing a bat yet and that might not happen for a little while. Kang landed on the disabled list August 20 with a left shoulder subluxation. He probably won't be ready until mid-September. Wednesday, 8:24 am

  • Gurriel (hamstring) remains out Wednesday
Yulieski Gurriel (hamstring) remains absent from the Astros' lineup on Wednesday.

Advice: Gurriel has now started just one of four games since joining the active major league roster on Sunday. He left his MLB debut with tightness in his right hamstring and is still apparently experiencing discomfort. This is probably a good time for a reminder that the Cuban slugger is 32 years old. Alex Bregman will start at third base again and bat second Wednesday versus Pirates ace Gerrit Cole. Wednesday, 7:19 am
  • Yasmany Tomas departs with back stiffness
Yasmany Tomas left Tuesday's game against the Braves due to mid-back stiffness.

Advice: Brandon Drury pinch-hit for Tomas midway through Tuesday's contest, as apparently Tomas' back stiffened up on him during the proceedings. He was waylaid by a stiff neck earlier this month, but no word as of yet whether his current back ailment is in any way related. For the time being, Tomas should be considered day-to-day. He will be reevaluated on Wednesday. Tuesday, 10:16 pm

  • Reyes has three hits, three runs versus Cards
Jose Reyes went 3-for-4 with an RBI single, a stolen base and three runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Cardinals.

Advice: Reyes scored nearly half of the Mets' runs in the game, accounting for three of the team's seven. He did it with three singles, giving him 15 hits in his last 38 at-bats. After a slow start, the 33-year-old is now hitting .284/.336/.477 with three homers, 12 RBI, 18 runs scored and six steals in 26 games. Tuesday, 9:48 pm
    Top 6, 3-2 vs Mia
  • Saladino still sidelined by back discomfort
Tyler Saladino missed a fourth straight start Tuesday due to back soreness.

Advice: But the 27-year-old infielder did say Tuesday that it's "feeling better." Saladino hasn't appeared in a game for the White Sox since last Thursday. He had been serving as their primary starter at second base with Brett Lawrie (hamstring, quad, knee) on the disabled list. Tuesday, 8:56 pm

  • Gurriel (hamstring) remains out Tuesday night
Yulieski Gurriel (hamstring) is out of the Astros' starting lineup again on Tuesday night.

Advice: Gurriel left his MLB debut on Sunday with right hamstring tightness and was limited to pinch-hitting duties on Monday. His status appears to be the same for Tuesday. Alex Bregman is starting at third base and batting second versus Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova. Tuesday, 1:05 pm
  • Gurriel (hamstring) appears as pinch-hitter
Yulieski Gurriel (hamstring) grounded out as a pinch-hitter Monday against the Pirates.

Advice: Gurriel exited his MLB debut on Sunday because of hamstring tightness, but he's expected to be back in the starting lineup Tuesday. The Astros don't have the DH available under National League rules, so look for him to either play third base or left field. Tuesday, 5:41 am
  • Gurriel available off bench Monday
Yulieski Gurriel is available off the bench Monday against the Pirates.

Advice: Gurriel left his MLB debut Sunday with some tightness in his hamstring, but it's not considered serious. The Astros don't have the DH available for their series against the Pirates, but Gurriel is likely to be back in the lineup Tuesday either at third base or in left field. Aug 22, 3:52 pm
  • Mets calling up T.J. Rivera on Tuesday
The Mets will recall T.J. Rivera from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, reports Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Advice: Neil Walker is set to go on paternity leave, so Rivera will provide some infield depth. The 27-year-old recently hit .355 (11-for-31) during his first stint in the majors. Aug 22, 1:47 pm

  • Yulieski Gurriel not in Monday's lineup
Yulieski Gurriel is not in Monday's lineup against the Pirates.

Advice: Gurriel went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk in his MLB debut Sunday before leaving with tightness in his right hamstring. He's considered day-to-day and will sit with the DH unavailable under National League rules. He could get a start a third base during the series, but Alex Bregman is starting there Monday. Aug 22, 1:04 pm
  • Justin Turner out of Dodgers lineup Monday
Justin Turner is out of the Dodgers' starting lineup Monday afternoon against the Reds.

Advice: Rob Segedin is starting at third base and batting eighth versus Reds right-hander Homer Bailey. This appears to be a routine day of rest for Turner, who's batting .320 with a 1.033 OPS so far in the second half. Aug 22, 7:04 am
  • Gurriel leaves debut with hamstring tightness
Yulieski Gurriel left his MLB debut against the Orioles with tightness in his right hamstring.

Advice: After sitting through a lengthy rain delay, the right hamstring tightened up on the Cuban slugger. He's considered day-to-day for now, though Gurriel said that he'll be in the lineup on Monday night in Pittsburgh. Aug 21, 6:08 pm
  • Josh Donaldson (thumb) back in lineup Sunday
Josh Donaldson (thumb) is back in the Blue Jays' lineup Sunday.

Advice: Donaldson hasn't played since jamming his right thumb on Wednesday, but apparently he's feeling well enough now to give it a go. He's at third base and batting second against Corey Kluber and the Indians. Aug 21, 8:20 am
  • Chase Headley battling Achilles tendinitis
Chase Headley has been dealing with tendinitis in his left Achilles for over a week.

Advice: It was a factor in him sitting out Friday and Saturday, although Headley was available off the bench Saturday. Headley could return to the lineup Sunday. Aug 21, 7:01 am
  • Astros recall Yulieski Gurriel from Triple-A
Astros recalled 3B Yulieski Gurriel from Triple-A Fresno.

Advice: Gurriel will make his major league debut in the designated hitter spot against the Orioles. Most of his playing time figures to come at third base, although he did make one start in left field in the minors. Alex Bregman might now see most of his starts in left. Gurriel batted an underwhelming .250/.262/.429 with two homers over 15 minor league games, but the 32-year-old has a seasoned bat and could hit the ground running with the Astros. Aug 21, 5:29 am
  • Tyler Saladino still out with sore back
Tyler Saladino is dealing with a sore back.

Advice: Saladino wasn't in Saturday's lineup and it looks like he's iffy for Sunday as well. The 27-year-old has played a utility role for the White Sox this season, appearing at seven different positions. Consider him day-to-day. Aug 20, 5:56 pm

  • Yunel Escobar (concussion) lands on 7-day DL
Angels placed 3B Yunel Escobar on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion.

Advice: Escobar will be sidelined for at least a week after fouling a ball off his face Friday against the Yankees. He's been a bright spot for the Angels this year, hitting .320 over 438 at-bats. That average ranks second in the American League behind MVP front-runner Jose Altuve. The Angels activated C.J. Pirates placed 3B Jung Ho Kang on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder injury.

Advice: Kang got hurt on a slide Friday against the Marlins. The injury will cost him 2-4 weeks. Kang's roster spot will be absorbed by first base prospect Josh Bell. It's poor timing for Kang, who was just starting to hit his stride offensively. The 29-year-old had hit safely in five of his last six games while raising his season average from .230 to .243.
