  • Melancon earns 14th save with scoreless 9th
Mark Melancon kept the Giants off the board in the ninth inning, grabbing his 14th save as the Pirates won 4-3 on Monday.

Advice: Melancon sandwiched a pair of ground outs with a strikeout of Brandon Crawford in a 12-pitch frame. Though his velocity still isn't where it was last season, it's a couple MPH above his average for April. Melancon has been scored upon just once in his last 17 appearances, and he's perfect in 12 save opportunities with a 2.63 ERA and a 13/5 K/BB ratio in 24 innings.

  • Wood tosses eight superb innings to beat ARI
Alex Wood earned the win with a terrific outing on Monday against the Diamondbacks, allowing only one run in eight innings.

Advice: The only run came in on an Ender Inciarte sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Wood scattered seven hits without issuing a walk while striking out four. The lefty is on a hot streak, posting a 1.88 ERA over his last four starts. On the year, he's carrying a 3.19 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP and a 42/18 K/BB ratio in 62 innings. Wood will look to win in his fourth consecutive start when he faces the Pirates at home next.

  • J.C. Gutierrez opts out of minors deal
    Giants released RHP J.C. Gutierrez.

Advice: Steve Adams of says Gutierrez has exercised the opt-out clause in his contract. The 31-year-old has posted a 4.94 ERA with 21 strikeouts over 23 2/3 innings at Triple-A Sacramento this season. He should be able to latch on elsewhere pretty quickly.

  • Rodriguez shuts door in the 9th for 9th save
Francisco Rodriguez kept the Cardinals off the board in the ninth inning, earning his ninth save and preserving Monday's 1-0 victory.

Advice: Rodriguez allowed a leadoff single to Jason Heyward, but got two quick outs on strikeouts. Heyward then stole second, and Rodriguez walked Peter Bourjos to put the go-ahead run on base. He bounced back, inducing a game-ending ground out from Kolten Wong. The veteran closer has converted the save in all nine opportunities thus far with a 1.42 ERA and a 22/6 K/BB ratio in 19 innings.

  • Marlins option Steve Cishek to Double-A
Marlins optioned RHP Steve Cishek to Double-A Jacksonville.

Advice: It's been a stunning fall for a guy who has been one of the better relievers in the National League over the previous four seasons. Sending Cishek down to work on his mechanics in a less pressurized situation could be the best thing, though. Cishek has been better of late after being removed from the closer role, but he still holds an ugly 6.98 ERA and 1.86 WHIP with 10 walks over 19 1/3 innings.

  • Urena notches a quality start in loss to Cubs
Jose Urena, making his second career start in the majors, notched a quality start but lost after giving up three runs in six innings to the Cubs on Monday.

Advice: Urena was immediately in trouble in the first inning, allowing the first three batters he faced to reach base, but he was able to rebound and limit the Cubs to only two runs. He allowed only four hits on the night while walking three and striking out four. Urena can be ignored for fantasy purposes for now. He'll make his next start at Coors Field against the Rockies.

  • Chris Capuano moved to Yankees' bullpen
Chris Capuano has been demoted to the Yankees' bullpen.

Advice: Capuano has been out-pitched by Adam Warren, so he'll be used in relief now with Masahiro Tanaka (forearm, wrist) set to rejoin the rotation. The veteran lefty holds a 6.39 ERA over three starts this season.

  • David Hale to start during doubleheader
David Hale will be recalled to start during Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Dodgers.

  • Fujikawa signs deal with team in Japan
Kyuji Fujikawa has agreed to a deal with the Kochi Fighting Dogs of Japan's Shikoku Island League.

Advice: Fujikawa scored a two-year, $9.5 million international free agent contract from the Cubs prior to the 2013 season but only wound up making 29 career appearances in the major leagues to the tune of a disappointing 5.74 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. We probably won't ever see him back in the bigs. Fujikawa turns 35 years old in July.

  • Joe Smith (neck) tosses scoreless inning
Joe Smith (neck) tossed a scoreless inning in his return to action Sunday versus the Tigers.

Advice: Smith had been bothered by a knot in his neck, but it's obviously no big deal. The veteran setup man owns a 3.57 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 23/6 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings this season. He has already racked up 14 holds.

  • Joe Smith was unavailable for Friday's game
Angels manager Mike Scioscia admitted after Friday's game that Joe Smith was unavailable due to a knot in his neck.

Advice: While the issue isn't believed to be serious, it does affect his delivery and Smith is receiving treatment for it. He should return to game action at some point over the weekend. The 31-year-old hurler boasts a 3.80 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 22/6 K/BB ratio over 21 1/3 innings on the season.

  • Wood beats Dodgers in return to the mound
Alex Wood permitted just one run and struck out six over seven frames in Wednesday's win over the Dodgers.

Advice: He scattered seven hits and declined to issue a free pass. The stellar showing was good to see after Wood was scratched from his last start on Friday because of a stomach virus. He showed no ill effects here, keeping at bay a dangerous Dodgers lineup in Los Angeles. Wood has a decent 3.50 ERA, but it comes with a terrible 1.50 WHIP and only 38 strikeouts over 54 innings.

  • Melancon earns 12th save as Pirates top MIA
Mark Melancon picked up his 12th save with a scoreless ninth inning as the Pirates downed the Marlins 5-2 on Wednesday.

Advice: Melancon saw the tying run step to the plate with two outs as a result of Jung-Ho Kang's fielding error and an Adeiny Hechavarria single, but he got Ichiro Suzuki to ground out to end the game. Despite early-season struggles and continued low velocity, Melancon has been getting the job done for the Pirates. He has allowed a run just once in his last 15 appearances and is now 12-for-13 in save chances with a 2.86 ERA and an 11/5 K/BB ratio in 22 innings.

  • Urena falters in his first major league start
Jose Urena gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings of work, taking the loss against the Pirates in his first major league start.

Advice: Urena made his major league debut out of the bullpen on April 14 but was recently recalled as the Marlins are dealing with a slew of injuries in their starting rotation. He gave up 10 hits overall, including a home run to Neil Walker, while walking one and striking out three. Urena will face the Cubs at home in his next start.

  • Marlins call up RHP Urena from Triple-A
Marlins recalled RHP Jose Urena from Triple-A New Orleans.

Advice: Jarred Cosart (vertigo), Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) and Mat Latos (knee) have all landed on the disabled list over the past week, so Urena will join the Marlins' rotation and start against the Pirates on Tuesday. The 23-year-old right-hander owns a 1.21 ERA and 22/12 K/BB ratio over 37 1/3 innings this season in Triple-A. He's not a consideration in mixed fantasy leagues right now.

  • Chris Capuano fans four in loss to Rangers
Chris Capuano allowed two runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings in a losing effort against the Rangers on Sunday night.

Advice: The veteran southpaw racked up four strikeouts on the night without issuing a walk. He needed 84 pitches go get 13 outs, and departed with two men on and one out in the fifth. He has struggled since returning from the disabled list, posting a 7.36 ERA, 1.91 WHIP and 8/2 K/BB ratio through 7 1/3 innings in his first two starts. He'll hope for better results when he does battle against the Athletics in Oakland on Friday.

  • Melancon gets two-out save vs. Mets
Mark Melancon got a two-out save Friday against the Mets.

Advice: Melancon was called on to protect a three-run lead after Gerrit Cole was pulled with two on and one out in the ninth. He retired both of the batters he faced to finish off the win. Melancon's velocity still isn't close to what it was last year, but he's 10-for-11 in save chances and owns a 3.15 ERA over his first 20 appearances.
