  • Jorge Mateo placed in concussion protocol Sunday
    Orioles’ manager Brandon Hyde told reporters after Sunday’s game that Jorge Mateo is in the concussion protocol.

    Advice: The 28-year-old was hit in the head by Cedric Mullins’ bat in the on-deck circle during Sunday’s contest against the Rays. He’ll have to pass through the concussion protocol before he’s able to return to game action.     Jorge Mateo left Sunday’s game against the Rays with an apparent head injury.

    Mateo was removed from Sunday's game against the Rays with an apparent head injury, Melanie Newman of MASN reports.

    Advice: The 28-year-old appeared to be struck in the head by a bat around the on-deck circle during the fourth inning and was replaced by a pinch hitter shortly thereafter.   • Red Sox place Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) on IL

The lefty-hitting Enmanuel Valdez is expected to occupy the strong side of a platoon at second base while Grissom is on the IL, but Gonzalez might have been the preferred option at the keystone against left-handed pitching had he not strained his hamstring.
