      Williams (elbow) yielded one run on three hits and two walks over four innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.

      Advice: Williams wasn't very efficient, needing 82 pitches to cover his four frames. The results were impressive, though, as he struck out six, induced 16 whiffs and gave up just one batted ball hit at 95+ mph. The Guardians have not confirmed any plans for when Williams' season debut for them will occur, but it could be next week, as soon as Tuesday versus the White Sox.       Jones isn't listed among the Pirates' probable starting pitchers for this weekend's series in Atlanta, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

      Advice: Jones will thus go the entire week without making a start, much to the chagrin of fantasy managers in weekly leagues who chose to keep him active. Gorman notes that general manager Ben Cherington has previously said that while the Pirates don't intend to shut Jones or fellow rookie phenom Paul Skenes down at any point this season, both pitchers will have their respective workloads managed to some degree as the campaign unfolds. Jones isn't dealing with any sort of injury, so the Pirates appear to have simply chosen this week as an opportunity to build in more recovery for the right-hander, who has logged 86 innings through his first 15 big-league starts.       Caballero went 3-for-3 with a run scored Wednesday against the Mariners.

      Advice: Caballero looked to be the odd man out when Taylor Walls returned from the injured list, but he's started in three straight games and four of the Rays' last five games. In part, that's because Brandon Lowe (toe) has been sidelined, though the Rays have also played Caballero at third base and shortstop during his recent uptick in playing time.       Doval picked up the save over the Cubs on Wednesday, allowing one hit over a scoreless ninth inning while striking out one.

      Advice: Doval entered the contest with a one-run lead in the ninth and surrendered a leadoff single to Dansby Swanson before retiring the next three batters in succession to secure his 14th save of the campaign. The right-hander has now converted each of his last five save attempts and has allowed only one baserunner over his last three appearances.     • Matt Manning working on delivery at Triple-A
      Matt Manning was not called up when the Tigers needed a starter this week because he’s working on tweaking his delivery at Triple-A Toledo.

      Advice: “Matty is still working on delivery,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “He’s still working on execution. There are plenty of things that we still want him to do.” One of those things is likely getting left-handed hitters out. Between MLB and Triple-A action combined, left-handed hitters are hitting .304 off Manning with a .893 OPS. The 26-year-old has a 4.88 ERA with 12 walks and 23 strikeouts across 27⅔ innings in five appearances for the Tigers this season and a 5.68 ERA with 13 walks and 42 strikeouts across 38 innings in eight games for the Mud Hens. “We also want the guys down in Triple-A to not assume, as well,” said Hinch. “You gotta give opportunity to guys that you feel good about. It’s not just one person because we’re used to it. He’s still got to earn his way like everybody else.” It sounds like Manning still has work to do before he earns another chance.       Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday the club is looking for Moreno (thumb) to return after a minimum stay on the 10-day injured list, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. He's eligible to return next Tuesday.

      Advice: Moreno, who has been hitting off a tee and playing catch, will begin ramping up Thursday. That's when he'll catch a bullpen session thrown by injured ace Zac Gallen (hamstring). After that, the catcher is scheduled for a game in the Arizona Complex League over the weekend, setting up a potential return Tuesday, when the club kicks off a three-game set on the road against the Dodgers.
