  • Jose Iglesias scratched from Tigers' lineup
Jose Iglesias was a late scratch from the Tigers' lineup Sunday.

Advice: Chris McCosky of the Detroit News says that Iglesias "was tore up pretty good" by the death of fellow Cuban Jose Fernandez and it appears that's the reason for him being scratched. Andrew Romine has replaced Iglesias at shortstop. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:40 am
  • Joe Mauer (quad) says he feels 'terrible'
Joe Mauer (quad) admitted Saturday that he's "been feeling terrible for a while."

Advice: Mauer has battled lingering pain in his right quad area for the last six weeks and has been in and out of the lineup of late. "Well, I feel terrible," Mauer said. "I’ve been feeling terrible for a while. But the season’s not over." The first baseman will be back in the lineup Sunday, but his playing time in the final week figures to continue to be curtailed. • Max Kepler (neck) singles in return to action
Max Kepler (neck) singled in one of his three plate appearances in his return to the lineup Saturday.

Advice: Kepler was removed from Thursday's contest and sat out Friday with a mild neck strain. It doesn't appear it will be an issue for him moving forward. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:25 am
  • Jose Iglesias (hand) back in action Saturday
Jose Iglesias (hand) singled and scored a run in five trips to the plate Saturday against the Royals.

Advice: Iglesias had to be lifted from Friday's game after an errant throw from third base hit his right hand as he crossed first base. However, he didn't wind up needing any additional down time as it turned out. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:23 am
  • Romo snares third save on Saturday
Sergio Romo gave up a base hit in the 10th inning but was able to protect a three-run lead to earn the save against the Padres on Saturday.

Advice: Romo now seems to be the go-to guy to close out games for the Giants. They have had a revolving door at closer but this was Romo's third save in the last five games. He is the Giants reliever to own for fantasy purposes. Romo missed half the season to injury but has pitched well when on the mound. He has a 2.93 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings. • Ruf has three hits, homer in win over Mets
Darin Ruf went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's win over the Mets.

Advice: Ruf swatted a three-run bomb in the fourth inning as the Phillies hung 10 runs on the Mets in the victory. It was Ruf's second homer in as many games after going his first 37 games without one. Ineffectiveness and the emergence of Tommy Joseph have relegated Ruf to a reserve role, and the 30-year-old will need a big spring to earn a spot on the 2017 roster. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:13 pm

  • Renfroe swats first big league homer Saturday
Hunter Renfroe went 2-for-4, scored twice and hit his first major league home run on Saturday versus the Giants.

Advice: He launched a solo homer off Madison Bumgarner in the fourth inning. He doubled and scored in the sixth. Renfroe hit 30 home runs at Triple-A this season. The 24-year-old former first round draft pick is getting his first cup of coffee in the majors this month. He will likely work his way into the Padres' starting lineup early next season. • Asher earns win despite four unearned runs
Alec Asher allowed four runs -- all unearned -- over five innings in a win over the Mets on Saturday.

Advice: Two errors that contributed to a four-run fifth inning -- with the Phillies ahead 10-0 at that point -- marred Asher's final line, but he gave up just five hits without walking a batter in the victory. Asher has now allowed just four earned runs in four starts this year, posting a 1.66 ERA and 0.92 WHIP while going 2-0 in those starts. A rematch with the Mets on Friday looms in Asher's final start of 2016. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:03 pm
  • Schebler collects three hits, two runs scored
Scott Schebler went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in a win over the Brewers on Saturday.

Advice: The outfielder had a double to go with two singles in the contest. The 25-year-old had a terrible start to the year, leading to his demotion in early May, but he's making up for it with a strong finish. Schebler is now hitting .320 in September with a homer, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored this month. He's batting .256/.322/.420 overall. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:53 pm
  • Bettis pounded for seven runs in 4 2/3 frames
Chad Bettis was demolished for seven runs -- five earned -- over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Saturday.

Advice: He can't blame this one on Coors Field either. He struggled to throw strikes, walking four on 105 pitches in the short and ugly outing. He gave up eight hits and struck out three. Bettis gave up four runs in the second inning, two more in the fourth and was chased after giving up an RBI single to opposing pitcher Clayton Kershaw in the fifth. His record falls to 13-8 with a 4.92 ERA in 179 1/3 innings. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:52 pm
  • Santana hits 10th homer in loss to Reds
Domingo Santana hit his 10th home run of the season in Saturday's loss to the Reds.

Advice: The Brewers had just six hits and only two extra-base hits against Dan Straily and company, with Santana's solo shot off Straily in the second inning turning out to be the only run the Brewers could push across in the loss. Santana now has 10 homers in 70 games this season, with six of those coming since he was activated from the disabled list on August 19 after missing almost two months with an elbow injury. A healthy Santana should contend for a starting spot in the Brewers' outfield in 2017. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:48 pm
  • Reddick hits grand slam, drives in five runs
Josh Reddick went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, drove in five runs and scored three times to lead the Dodgers over the Rockies on Saturday.

Advice: He added a walk as well. The Dodgers were already ahead 10-0 when he hit the grand slam but they all count the same in fantasyland. He has been playing nearly every day of late and has a .281/.346/.407 slash line combined between his games with Oakland and Los Angeles this season. The home run was his 10th of the season to go with 37 RBI and 53 runs scored in 388 at-bats. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:36 pm
  • Dietrich launches seventh homer versus Braves
Derek Dietrich hit a two-run home run in Saturday's win over the Braves.

Advice: Dietrich hit the two-run blast off Braves starter Aaron Blair in the first inning. He finished 1-for-4 in the game. Dietrich now has seven homers and 42 RBI in 122 games, batting a respectable .286/.381/.437 in that span. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:17 pm

  • Blair gives up five runs in loss to Marlins
Aaron Blair allowed five runs over 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Marlins on Saturday.

Advice: Blair gave up six hits and walked three, and the right-hander failed to register a strikeout in the outing. The start came five days after he bested Mets stud Noah Syndergaard, speaking to the volatility the 24-year-old has brought to the table this year. Blair owns an 8.02 ERA in 14 starts overall, and a date with the Tigers on Friday could be a rough way to end a trying rookie season. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:14 pm
  • Joe Mauer (quad) remains sidelined Saturday
Joe Mauer (quad) is not in the Twins' lineup Saturday against the Mariners.

Advice: Mauer is still battling right quad soreness. Saturday will mark his fifth straight absence. Kennys Vargas will draw another start at first base and bat fifth against M's lefty Ariel Miranda. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 1:12 pm
  • James Paxton strikes out nine in win
James Paxton pitched seven innings of one-run ball to beat the Twins on Friday.

Advice: Paxton struck out nine and walked none. The left-hander hasn't been very consistent, but he's flashed top-of-the-rotation stuff this season, and he'll enter next year as a nice mid-round pick in mixed leagues, even if he doesn't seem like a great bet to make 30 starts. Rotoworld.com Friday, 10:09 pm
  • Meyer gives up four runs in no-decision
Alex Meyer yielded four runs in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Astros.

Advice: Meyer gave up just one run over his first five innings of work, but things fell apart for him in the sixth inning. He gave up an infield single and a pair of walks to load the bases before being pulled. All three baserunners eventually came around to score. The tall right-hander has shown some flashes, but he can’t be trusted in mixed fantasy leagues right now. He’ll finish his season with a start against the Athletics next time out. • Iglesias day-to-day with hand contusion
Jose Iglesias has been diagnosed with a right hand contusion and is listed as day-to-day.

Advice: The defensive wizard was hit in the hand by an errant throw while running the bases in Friday's victory over the Royals. It wouldn't be surprising to see Andrew Romine start in his place on Saturday. Rotoworld.com Friday, 6:51 pm
  • Jose Iglesias leaves game with hand injury
Jose Iglesias was forced to leave Friday's game against the Royals after being hit on the hand by an errant throw.

Advice: Iglesias got drilled on the right hand by a wild throw from Cheslor Cuthbert as he crossed first base. He remained in the game to run for himself, but was replaced by Andrew Romine defensively the next half inning. Expect the Tigers to provide an update on his status after the conclusion of Friday's game. Rotoworld.com Friday, 6:42 pm
  • Max Kepler (neck) available off the bench
Max Kepler (neck) is not in the Twins' lineup Friday.

Advice: Kepler was lifted from Thursday's game with a mild neck strain. He did report improvement Friday and is available off the bench. Logan Schafer will cover right field Friday. Rotoworld.com Friday, 3:02 pm
  • Mauer (quad) might not play again until Sun.
Joe Mauer might not start again until Sunday due to ongoing soreness in his right quad.

Advice: Mauer hasn't started since last Saturday, although he had been slated to play Wednesday before that game was rained out. After a terrific August, Mauer has fallen off to .119/.245/.238 in September. Kennys Vargas has been filling in at first base. Rotoworld.com Friday, 6:45 am
  • Romo earns save as Giants survive late scares
Sergio Romo earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Padres.

Advice: The Giants' bullpen has been an out-and-out mess in September. Romo has picked up saves in two of the last three games, though, and might earn a few additional chances over the final week-plus. On Thursday, he allowed a one-out double to Ryan Schimpf in the ninth, but induced a pop out and a ground out to end the contest without run-scoring incident. In 26 2/3 innings this season, Romo has pitched to a 3.04 ERA and 29/7 K/BB ratio. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 10:32 pm
  • Kepler leaves game with mild neck strain
Max Kepler was removed from Thursday's contest with a mild neck strain.

Advice: He sustained the injury when he was crunched into a wall in foul territory by teammate Kennys Vargas while chasing down a fly ball. He should be considered day-to-day. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 7:58 pm
  • Joe Mauer out of Minnesota lineup for Gm. 1
Joe Mauer is out of the Twins' starting lineup for Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader versus Detroit.

Advice: Kennys Vargas will start at first base and bat fifth against Tigers right-hander Anibal Sanchez. Twins manager Paul Molitor said he has noticed some "off-balance" swings from Mauer this week and might also sit him against Justin Verlander in the nightcap Thursday. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 9:35 am
  • Padres promote Hunter Renfroe from El Paso
Padres purchased the contract of OF Hunter Renfroe from Triple-A El Paso.

Advice: Renfroe was one of the top hitters in the Pacific Coast League this summer, slashing .306/.336/.557 with 30 homers and 105 RBI in 133 games for the El Paso Chihuahuas, whose season ended Tuesday in the Triple-A championship. The plan probably calls for him to make three or four starts over the Padres' final 11 games, which doesn't offer much fantasy appeal. Renfroe, the 13th overall pick in the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft, will challenge for a starting job with San Diego leading into 2017. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:05 pm
  • Padres calling up Renfroe, Margot and others
Padres manager Andy Green confirmed late Tuesday that the club is calling up prospects Hunter Renfroe, Manuel Margot, Austin Hedges, and Carlos Asuaje.

Advice: We were hoping this might happen three weeks ago so that Renfroe and Margot -- both top-100 prospects -- might be of some fantasy use, but the El Paso Chihuahuas made a run all the way to the Triple-A championship before falling to the Yankees' Scranton/Wilkes-Barre affiliate on Tuesday night in Memphis. Renfroe, 24, batted .306/.336/.557 with 30 home runs and 105 RBI in 133 games this season at the Triple-A level. Margot, 21, hit .304/.351/.426 with six home runs and 30 stolen bases in 124 games. They'll both be appearing in the majors for the first time. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 6:06 am
  • Aaron Blair out-pitches Thor on Monday
Aaron Blair pitched the best game of his young career Monday, holding the Mets to two runs over six frames in a 7-3 victory.

Advice: This looked like one of the biggest mismatches of the season on paper with Noah Syndergaard going up against Blair, who entered with an 8.23 ERA over his first 12 major league starts. However, Thor was knocked out after 3 2/3 innings and Blair went six strong, needing just 86 pitches. That's baseball. The rookie right-hander gets the Marlins in Miami this weekend and will still be hard to trust in fantasy leagues. Rotoworld.com Monday, 7:48 pm
  • Chad Bettis defeats Padres to win 13th game
Chad Bettis picked up his 13th victory of the season on Sunday, limiting the Padres to three runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Advice: Bettis punched out three and issued just one walk on the afternoon. He allowed just a solo home run to Adam Rosales through the first five innings, then the Padres tacked on a pair while chasing him in the sixth. He'll carry a 4.79 ERA and 1.37 WHIP into Saturday's start against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Rotoworld.com Sep 18, 4:36 pm
  • Derek Dietrich reaches three times
Derek Dietrich went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk against the Phillies on Sunday.

Advice: Dietrich started his first three games back from the disabled list Sept. 3-5, but this was just his third start in 13 days since. He's playing well enough to justify more at-bats; he's 9-for-24 with a homer, two doubles and three walks since coming back. Rotoworld.com Sep 18, 2:24 pm

  • Scott Schebler goes 3-for-4 against Pirates
Scott Schebler went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored Sunday against the Pirates.

Advice: With a .265 average and a .770 OPS in 219 at-bats, Schebler is making a decent case to open next season as the lefty portion of a platoon in one of the Reds' corner outfield spots. He doesn't have a whole lot of upside beyond this, though. Rotoworld.com Sep 18, 1:10 pm
  • Max Kepler not in Sunday's lineup
Max Kepler is not in the Twins' lineup Sunday.

Advice: It looks to be a routine day off. Joe Mauer and Eduardo Escobar are also sitting out, as the Twins have Logan Schafer in right field, Kennys Vargas at first base and James Beresford at third base. Rotoworld.com Sep 18, 8:10 am
  • Paxton yields two runs in seven frames Sat.
James Paxton took a loss to the Astros on Saturday despite allowing just two runs in seven innings.

Advice: He struck out seven batters while walking just one. He gave up four hits, all of which stayed in the park. Both runs scored on a Yulieski Gurriel single in the sixth inning. Paxton falls to 4-7 with a 3.88 ERA. He has a 100/23 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 109 innings. He is one of the hardest-throwing starters in baseball. Rotoworld.com Sep 17, 10:08 pm
  • Mauer draws three walks Friday
Joe Mauer went 0-for-1 with three walks Friday against the Mets.

Advice: It was his third three-walk game of the season. We know, we know. That isn’t very exciting for fantasy owners. Mauer recently missed some time with some soreness in his quads, but he felt well enough to play first base on Friday under National League rules. Rotoworld.com Sep 16, 7:02 pm
  • Mauer (quads) back in Twins lineup Thursday
Joe Mauer (quads) is back in the Twins' starting lineup on Thursday against the Tigers.

Advice: Mauer sat out Wednesday due to nagging soreness in both of his quadriceps. He will serve as the Twins' designated hitter and bat third Thursday versus Detroit right-hander Mike Pelfrey. Rotoworld.com Sep 15, 8:18 am
  • Domingo Santana cranks three-run shot
Domingo Santana went 2-for-4 and pounded a three-run homer against the Reds on Wednesday.

Advice: The home run came off reliever Ross Ohlendorf but it still counts. He hit it in the eighth inning to bury any hopes the Reds may have had for a comeback. Santana missed a lot of time due to a bum elbow this year. He has hit well when given the chance, slashing .255/.355/.435 with eight home runs in 184 at-bats. The 23-year-old is a huge guy with big power but has hit for nice batting averages in the minors as well. Rotoworld.com Sep 14, 9:01 pm
