    • Jeff Samardzija held the Pirates to one run over seven innings on Wednesday but took the loss.
Advice: Samardzija was excellent, fanning eight batters and allowing only three hits and one walk. But he got exactly zero support from the Chicago offense and thus fell to 2-6 on the year. The right-hander has an ace-like 3.25 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 72/22 K/BB ratio in 63 2/3 innings this season and should keep rolling next week against the White Sox.

    • Gio Gonzalez pitched 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against the Giants on Wednesday.
Advice: The obvious call was to pull Gonzalez after 107 pitches and seven scoreless innings today, but manager Davey Johnson was hoping for more. A one-out walk got Gonzalez pulled in the eighth, and the baserunner came around to score off Drew Storen, tying the game at 1. Gonzalez has allowed just three earned runs over 21 innings in his last three starts, but he has no victories to show for it.

    • Brandon Maurer allowed seven runs in three innings as the Mariners lost to the Angels on Wednesday.
Advice: After two rough outings to start the season, Maurer had been better of late. But he struggled from the outset Wednesday, giving up five runs in the first inning and a run in each of the next two. His next scheduled start is Tuesday against the Padres.

  • Fri, May 17
    • Brandon Maurer turned in a quality start in a no-decision against the Indians on Friday, allowing three runs on five hits over his six frames.
Advice: Maurer matched his career-high with six strikeouts in the game, while walking four. Despite the decent start, he owns a putrid 5.75 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 28/14 K/BB ratio on the season, and could be at risk of losing his spot in the M's rotation. He'll take on the Angels in Anaheim on Wednesday, but should be avoided for fantasy purposes.

    • Jaime Garcia was diagnosed with a 30-40 percent tear of the labrum in his left shoulder.
Advice: Dr. James Andrews recommended surgery and reportedly expressed amazement that Garcia pitched as well as he did earlier this season under the circumstances. The Cardinals' team doctor will perform the shoulder procedure. It's safe to say that Garcia will not contribute in a meaningful way for the rest of the 2013 season.

    • Jaime Garcia will visit Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday for a second opinion on his left shoulder.
Advice: Garcia was placed on the disabled list over the weekend with a left shoulder strain and could be facing season-ending surgery. Tyler Lyons will fill his spot in the rotation for now, but the Cardinals are hoping to have Jake Westbrook (elbow) back from the disabled list soon.

    • Cardinals placed LHP Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.
Advice: Garcia has been dealing with shoulder issues for over a year and will visit Dr. James Andrews to try to get some answers. Surgery could ultimately be the course taken. The Cardinals are calling up reliever Mitchell Boggs on Saturday to fill their vacant roster spot but will have to add a new starting pitcher soon. Maybe 2012 first-rounder Michael Wacha will get a chance.

  • Fri, May 17
    • Jaime Garcia got the win Friday night against the Brewers despite giving up six runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Advice: Hey, fantasy owners will take it. Garcia allowed six hits and a walk while all the damage was courtesy of a pair of two-run homers by Aramis Ramirez. The southpaw has allowed 11 runs over his last two starts, increasing his ERA from 2.25 to 3.58 on the year. Still, he'll carry a 5-2 record into a start against the Padres next week in San Diego.

    • Clayton Richard (illness) gave up two runs in six innings Tuesday in his second minor league rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Advice: Richard, out since May 4 with an intestinal virus, gave up five hits and no walks while striking out four. The southpaw threw 65 out of 94 pitches for strikes. It should be enough for the Padres to activate him from the disabled list.

Advice: Norris has left each of his last two starts with lower back spasms, but both times his removal was considered precautionary. He received massage treatment Wednesday and thinks "the prevention process of taking care of it now and getting me out of the game will help." Assuming he doesn't have a setback over the next few days, the righty will likely face the Rockies on Monday.

    • Bud Norris left Tuesday's start against the Royals following six scoreless innings after aggravating his back injury.
Advice: Norris was originally supposed to start Sunday after leaving his previous outing with back spasms but was pushed back just in case. Obviously, it appears that he's not over the ailment. The righty gave up just five hits and two walks over six frames before exiting Tuesday. The Astros should provide an update on his status after the game.

    • Jeremy Hellickson pitched a season-high eighth innings and allowed two runs Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Advice: Hellickson left with a one-run lead, but that was blown right away by Fernando Rodney. It was still a nice outing for Hellickson, going down as just his third quality start of the season. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out four.

  • Fri, May 17
    • Jeremy Hellickson pitched poorly on Friday, but still earned a victory over the Orioles after allowing eight runs on 10 hits over his 7 2/3 innings.
Advice: Hellickson struck out four and walked one in the game. After allowing three early runs, Hellickson was on cruise control after the Rays offense bombarded the Orioles with 12 runs through the first six innings. He ran into trouble in the eighth though, where the O's tagged him for four more runs before chasing him from the game. He's been extremely inconsistent on the season and will carry an awful 5.82 ERA into his next start where he'll take on the Blue Jays in Toronto on Wednesday.

    • Wade Davis allowed three runs over five innings but escaped with a no-decision as the Royals beat the Astros on Tuesday.
Advice: Davis was fortunate to hold the Astros to just three runs, as he gave up eight hits and four walks on the night. After a strong start to the season, Davis now owns a 5.91 ERA and has won just one start since April 17. Fortunately for Davis, the Royals don't have any better options to replace him in the rotation at this point. His next start will come Sunday against the Angels.

Advice: Continued excellent from Kuroda, who issued one walk while striking out five. The veteran right-hander has delivered quality starts in each of his last seven outings and now has a 1.99 ERA for the year. He's quietly one of the best pitchers in the American League.

    • Jason Hammel allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings as the Orioles beat the Yankees on Wednesday.
Advice: Hammel was coming off two straight starts in which he didn't last five innings, so Wednesday was a return to form of sorts for the right-hander. Despite an ugly 5.37 ERA, Hammel is now 6-2 through 10 starts. His next turn will come Monday against the Nationals.

    • Jason Hammel was obliterated in a losing effort against the Rays on Friday, getting torched for seven runs on 10 hits over his 4 2/3 innings of work.
Advice: Hammel fanned four and walked two in the disappointing outing. Despite his 5-2 record on the season, Hammel's 5.72 ERA and 1.57 WHIP paint a very different picture on how he's pitched this season. He'll attempt to right the ship when he takes on the Yankees at home on Wednesday.

Advice: Weaver allowed just one run and did not walk a batter while striking out nine. He threw 75 pitches, 62 of which were strikes. The right-hander is likely to rejoin the Angels' starting rotation early next week after missing the past month-plus with a fractured left elbow.

    • Paul Maholm allowed just an unearned run over 7 1/3 innings in defeating the Twins on Wednesday.
Advice: Unfortunately, Maholm's two bad starts this year were really bad, because he's given up just nine earned runs in the other eight. This is the fourth time he's gone without allowing a single earned run. Overall, he's 6-4 with a 3.38 ERA.

Advice: Maholm was in line for the loss before Justin Upton launched a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning. • James Shields allowed just two runs in seven innings but took the loss against the Astros on Wednesday.
Advice: Shields committed one mistake, a two-run homer by J.D. Martinez, but the Astros pitchers made it stand up to saddle Shields with his fifth loss. He was otherwise stellar, allowing seven hits while striking out seven on the night. Despite the 2-5 record, Shields has been as good as advertised for the Royals this season, now owning a 2.47 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP. He will get the Cardinals next.

    • John Danks (shoulder) will be activated from the disabled list to make his season debut Friday against the Marlins.
Advice: White Sox manager Robin Ventura finally made the decision official on Wednesday night. Danks posted a 3.18 ERA during his four rehab starts, but he also had a 15/13 K/BB ratio and is still dealing with diminished velocity. Mixed leaguers should stay away for now.

Advice: If everything checks out with the left-hander early this week, he should be cleared to join the White Sox starting rotation on Friday night against the Marlins. Danks has been on the shelf all year and makes for a decent waiver stash right now in AL-only fantasy leagues. Since he's coming off shoulder surgery and still rebuilding his arm strength, it might not be wise to trust him right out of the gate in standard mixed formats. Even against Miami.

He has a 1.73 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 73/27 K/BB ratio in 72 2/3 total innings this season and should be able to keep the dominance going next week in an interleague matchup against the struggling Phillies.

    • Stephen Strasburg pitched seven innings of one-run ball, striking out seven, in a no-decision against the Giants on Tuesday.
Advice: Strasburg has allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts, dropping his ERA from 3.45 to 2.66. That overstates how well he's pitched -- he's given up nine unearned runs this season -- but tonight's performance was maybe the most impressive one he's put together this year and should give him something to build on.

    • Stephen Strasburg gave up two runs -- one earned -- over eight innings as the Nationals vanquished the Padres 6-2 on Thursday.
Advice: He walked three and struck out four, hurling 117 pitches before ceding to Rafael Soriano. Strasburg again wasn't at his best -- only 68 of those tosses were strikes -- but he handcuffed San Diego regardless. The 24-year-old right-hander has been considered a fantasy disappointment to this point, despite possessing a 2.83 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 55/18 K/BB rate. Advice: The Marlins are calling him day-to-day, so it's evidently a minor strain. He will be reevaluated on Thursday before it's determined whether he can make his next start. His undoing on this evening was his inability to keep the ball in the yard, as he allowed three home runs, including a pair of two-run shots to Paul Goldschmidt. Despite his 1-4 record, Slowey has actually pitched very well for the Marlins this season, posting a 3.44 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 37/12 K/BB ratio over his first 52 1/3 innings. Advice: Santiago did his part, yielding only three hits while striking out nine, but the Chicago offense didn't provide him with very much support. Advice: Santiago will be starting on short rest, though he lasted just 3 1/3 innings and 80 pitches in his last outing. It could be the left-hander's last start for a while, as he's an option to be bumped from the rotation when John Danks returns.

    • Padres reliever Anthony Bass was charged with four runs in his second inning of work Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Advice: Bass was ripped off tonight. The first hitter to reach against him did so on a strikeout/wild pitch. The second had a clean single, but Yadier Molina followed with a double-play ball, only Everth Cabrera vacated second base way too early on the relay and wasn't given credit for the out. With runners on second and third with one out, Bud Black had Bass intentionally walk Jon Jay, and Daniel Descalso followed with a grand slam. • Matt Harvey surrendered four runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Reds.
Advice: Harvey was in line to take his first loss, but the Mets came back to tie it in the seventh before falling in the ninth. It's the first time in 17 starts that Harvey has been charged with more than three runs. The only time in his major league career that it happened was in a loss to the Padres last Aug. 5.

    • Matt Harvey allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings Friday to beat the Cubs and move to 5-0.
Advice: Both runs were earned because Alfonso Soriano was credited with an infield single on his grounder in the first. In reality, that ball should have been an out, which probably would have resulted in just one run scoring in the frame. Harvey ended up striking out six and walking none today. Oddly enough, all six of those strikeouts ended innings.
