    • Yoshida (thumb) could start rehab assignment soon
      Masataka Yoshida (thumb) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment near the end of this week.

      Advice: Red Sox’ manager Alex Cora told reporters on Sunday that Yoshida has seen considerable improvement and will “hopefully” be ready to begin a minor league rehab assignment before the end of the week. The 30-year-old has been sidelined since the beginning of May due to a strained left thumb.       Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that he's hopeful Yoshida (thumb) could begin a minor-league rehab assignment later this week, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

      Advice: Cora's comments came one day after Yoshida took live batting practice on the field and reported no issues with his strained left thumb, which has kept him out of action since April 28. Though the skipper didn't offer up a firm timeline for when Yoshida might be activated from the 10-day injured list, the 30-year-old may only need a handful of games in the minors this weekend before he's deemed ready to rejoin the Red Sox.       King came away with a no-decision Sunday against the Royals, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings.

      Advice: King was sharp, not allowing an extra-base hit and turning in another quality start, his fifth over his past six contests. The 29-year-old snapped a three-game streak allowing a home run, something he has struggled with all season -- his 1.8 HR/9 ranks in the ninth percentile. On the whole, King has been solid this season, recording a 3.82 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with a 78:31 K:BB across 73 innings.       Holmes threw a scoreless inning to earn a save against the Giants on Sunday.

      Advice: Holmes quickly finished off the 7-5 win Sunday, needing just 12 pitches to retire San Francisco's 2-3-4 hitters in order. He began the year without allowing an earned run through 20 innings before coughing up four in a brutal outing against Seattle on May 20.       Clay Holmes slammed the door on the Giants in the ninth inning on Sunday, protecting a two-run lead to earn his 17th save of the season.

      Advice: The Yankees rallied for four runs off of Giants’ closer Camilo Doval in the top half of the ninth inning to take the lead and Holmes did his job to make sure that it stood up. He needed just 12 pitches (eight strikes) to retire Brett Wisely, Wilmer Flores and Matt Chapman in order to end it. The 31-year-old hurler has been spectacular this season, compiling a 1.37 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 27/8 K/BB ratio across 26 1/3 innings while nabbing 17 saves and a victory.     • Michael King gets tough luck no decision vs KC
      Michael King allowed one run on four hits in seven innings in a no-decision against the Royals.

      Advice: King was all set to record the win with the Padres up 3-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. However, with their bullpen being taxed heavily over the last few days, the Padres had to go with Yuki Matsui to close the game, and he allowed three runs while only recording one out. King was only able to induce eight whiffs on 48 swings for a 17 percent whiff rate and 24 percent CSW, but he allowed an average exit velocity on all batted balls of just 84 mph.       Muncy (oblique) said Sunday he's been shut down from swinging for the past 7-to-10 days after he felt a "twinge" around his rib cage, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

      Advice: The 33-year-old landed on the injured list in mid-May with the oblique strain and doesn't appear to have made significant progress in his recovery. Per David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports, Muncy was able to field groundballs Sunday but is shut down from most baseball activities, so he's likely not particularly close to rejoining the Dodgers.     • Gerrit Cole will need at least two rehab starts
      Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday that Gerrit Cole (elbow) will need at least a couple of minor league rehab starts before he’s ready to make his 2024 debut.

      Advice: Cole will make his first minor league rehab start at Double-A Somerset on Tuesday. His next turn will come five days after that. If he needs just two starts, his regular season debut would likely come against the Red Sox at some point during their series starting on June 14. If he needs a third tune-up in the minor leagues, it’s likely that his debut would come the following week against the Braves. As long as he avoids any setbacks, his return appears to be imminent.
