    • Jason Heyward likely to hit second for Cards
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has indicated that Jason Heyward is likely to start off next season hitting second in the batting order.

Advice: "I can see Jason as a ‘2’ or ‘3’ guy," said Matheny. "And I really like him in the ‘2’ hole." General manager John Mozeliak said last month that the team was toying with the idea of moving Matt Carpenter down in the order, but it appears at this point Matheny is leaning towards keeping the third baseman in the leadoff spot directly ahead of Heyward. The former Braves spent 94 of his 148 starts last season in the leadoff spot. Rotoworld.com

    • Dan Uggla played through concussion in 2014
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Dan Uggla played through an undetected concussion last season.

Advice: It's not clear when Uggla suffered the concussion, but Cafardo says the condition "was confirmed by doctors this offseason." While it's hard to entirely blame Uggla's hideous .149/.229/.213 batting line in 2014 on the concussion issue, it's certainly something worth noting. Uggla inked a minor league deal with the Nationals on Friday and could get a chance to compete for their second base job. Rotoworld.com

    • Castro cleared of involvement in shooting
Starlin Castro has been cleared of any involvement in a shooting in the Dominican Republic.

Advice: Six people were injured in the shooting, which took place early Saturday morning at a nightclub. While early reports indicated that Castro was arrested or detained, his agent, Paul Kinzer, said that he went to the police station voluntarily and video proved his innocence. Dominican police rep Jacobo Mateo Moquete later announced that Castro was free after being cleared of any wrongdoing. Rotoworld.com

    • Report: Phillies sign Wandy to minors deal
A source tells CSNPhilly.com that the Phillies have signed Wandy Rodriguez to a minor league contract.

Advice: The deal is pending a physical, per the report. Multiple reports late Friday said the two sides were close to a deal, so it's not surprising that they got the details worked out. Rodriguez, 35, had a disastrous 6.75 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 26 2/3 innings with the Pirates this past season, but he's been a decent pitcher when healthy. Rotoworld.com

    • Dodgers to announce Anderson signing Monday
Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times hears the Dodgers are expected to announce their signing of Brett Anderson on Monday.

Advice: The one-year, $10 million deal was reported nearly two weeks ago, but the team waited to announce the deal until Anderson passed a physical and they were able to consult with medical specialists. The 26-year-old makes for a nice one-year gamble, as he's been good when healthy. Anderson had a 2.91 ERA over eight starts with the Rockies this past season. Rotoworld.com

    • Steve Johnson (shoulder) good to play catch
Steve Johnson (shoulder) has been cleared to begin playing catch.

Advice: Johnson underwent surgery near the end of the season to have gone spurs removed after fighting through shoulder injuries the majority of the season. He should be ready to go for spring training. Rotoworld.com

    • Twins sign Brayan Villarreal to minors deal
Twins signed RHP Brayan Villarreal to a minor league contract.

Advice: The 27-year-old struggled through an injury-plagued 2014 season, posting a 3.86 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over just 14 innings between the Red Sox Rookie League squad and Triple-A Pawtucket. He should have a chance to compete for a bullpen job with the Twins this spring. Rotoworld.com

    • Tyler Collins could crack Opening Day roster
Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press believes that Tyler Collins will claim one of the final bench spots on the Tigers' Opening Day roster.

Advice: The Tigers have been in the market for a left-handed power bat for their bench, and the best option may already be in-house with Collins. The 24-year-old outfielder hit .263/.335/.423 with 18 homers and 62 RBI in 121 contests at Triple-A Toledo in 2014. Rotoworld.com

    • Phillies nearing deal with Wandy Rodriguez
According to multiple reports, the Phillies are nearing a minor league deal with free agent left-hander Wandy Rodriguez.

Advice: The 35-year-old was an abomination for the Pirates in 2014, posting a 6.75 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 26 2/3 innings while battling arthritis in his pitching elbow. It would make for a nice low-risk signing for the Phillies, though Rodriguez shouldn't be counted on for much. Rotoworld.com

    • Rafael Furcal suffers torn hamstring
Dionisio Soldevila of ESPNDeportes.com reports that Rafael Furcal will miss the Dominican Winter League playoffs after tearing his hamstring.

Advice: It's not clear which hamstring he tore, but it's obviously bad news for Furcal after he missed nearly all of the 2014 season with left hamstring issues. A timetable for his rehab isn't known at this time, but it would now seem unlikely that Furcal is able to land a contract before spring training. The 37-year-old infielder has played just nine games over the last two seasons due to injury. Rotoworld.com

    • Report: Hiroki Kuroda to return to Japan
Chugoku Shimbun and Sports Nippon report that Hiroki Kuroda will return to Japan to play for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp next season.

Advice: Kuroda could have had another one-year contract with the Yankees if he wanted it, but it appears he'll return to his native country instead. The veteran right-hander will turn 40 in February but is coming off another fine season, having put up a 3.71 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and 146/35 K/BB ratio over 199 innings. Rotoworld.com

    • Clint Robinson signs on with Nationals
Nationals signed 1B Clint Robinson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Robinson spent almost all of last season at Triple-A with the Dodgers, batting .312/.401/.534 with 18 homers and 80 RBI. He's merely organizational depth. Rotoworld.com

    • Pierzynski getting $2 million from Braves
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that A.J. Pierzynski will make a base salary of $2 million in his one-year contract with the Braves.

Advice: He'll have the opportunity to make more through incentives. Pierzynski will serve as Christian Bethancourt's backup in 2015 after batting .251/.288/.337 over 362 plate appearances last season for the Red Sox and Cardinals. Rotoworld.com

    • Nationals sign Dan Uggla to minor league deal
Nationals signed 2B Dan Uggla to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: General manager Mike Rizzo has history with Uggla, as he drafted him back in 2001 when he was Director of Scouting for the Diamondbacks. Uggla will turn 35 in March and batted just .149/.229/.213 in 157 plate appearances last season. There's a good possibility he's done, but he did at least land in a good spot, as the Nats have an opening at second base. That said, it's unlikely that they're done shopping for upgrades at the position. Rotoworld.com

    • J.C. Gutierrez re-signs with Giants
Giants re-signed RHP J.C. Gutierrez to a minor league contract.

Advice: The pact likely contains an invitation to spring training. Gutierrez held a 3.96 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 44/16 K/BB ratio over 63 2/3 innings for the World Champion Giants in 2014. He should get a legit shot at an Opening Day bullpen spot. Rotoworld.com

    • D'Backs re-sign Pacheco to minors contract
Diamondbacks re-signed INF/C Jordan Pacheco to a minor league contract.

Advice: The deal includes an invitation to spring training, where Pacheco should have a good shot at an Opening Day roster spot. The 28-year-old batted just .272/.298/.321 in 47 games this past season for Arizona, but he can play catcher and third base. Rotoworld.com

    • Braves, Pierzynski agree to one-year contract
Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that the Braves and A.J. Pierzynski have agreed to a one-year contract, pending a physical.

Advice: Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez apparently let the cat out of the bag while at a Honeybaked Ham on Wednesday and Bowman was able to confirm the story's validity. We're not kidding. Pierzynski, 37, batted just .251/.288/.337 in 362 plate appearances this past season between the Red Sox and Cardinals and should back up young Christian Bethancourt in 2015. The deal is expected to become official after January 1. Rotoworld.com

    • Phillies have interest in Rafael Furcal
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Phillies are "kicking the tires" on Rafael Furcal.

Advice: Freddy Galvis is expected to take over at shortstop following the trade of Jimmy Rollins, but Furcal could be added as a backup option. The 37-year-old infielder was limited to just nine games for the Marlins this season due to leg issues after missing all of 2013 following Tommy John surgery. Rotoworld.com
