  • Charlie Morton to throw bullpen session
Charlie Morton (sports hernia) will throw a bullpen session on either Thursday or Friday.

Advice: He'll then throw a simulated game next Tuesday before the Pirates decide what next to do with the righty. Morton's sports hernia was still bothering him during a rehab start last week, so it's possible he won't return this season.

  • John Jaso (concussion) takes live BP
John Jaso (concussion) took live batting practice Tuesday.

Advice: It's the first time he's done so since landing on the disabled list last week with a concussion. The A's will proceed cautiously given Jaso's past concussion issues, likely not using him anywhere but DH for the rest of the season. The 30-year-old is feeling better, though, and thinks he'll be back relatively soon.

Advice: Fremina owns a weak .241 batting average and .293 on-base percentage this year in the majors, but the big 27-year-old has pretty good pop and will give the A's some right-handed power off the bench for the stretch run.

  • Ruggiano to undergo season-ending surgery
Justin Ruggiano will miss the remainder of the 2014 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle.

Advice: The Pirates haven't officially revealed what the next step is for the right-hander, but obviously he won't be rejoining the rotation anytime soon. Morton had been hoping to delay sports hernia surgery until the offseason, but it's possible that he'll now go ahead and have the procedure.

  • Ruggiano to see specialist for ankle sprain
Justin Ruggiano will see a specialist for his sprained left ankle this week in Dallas.

Advice: Ruggiano has been out since last Friday and isn't making much progress, so the Cubs will try to get a more exact diagnosis. Jorge Soler was promoted from Triple-A Iowa when Ruggiano was placed on the disabled list and the talented 22-year-old is expected to finish out the 2014 season as Chicago's everyday right fielder. Ruggiano will return as a bench bat, if he returns at all.

Advice: Snider tweaked the hamstring after beating out an infield single in the third inning. It's not clear at this point how long it might sideline him. Jose Tabata would stand to benefit if Snider is out a while, though the Pirates could also give Gregory Polanco another look.

  • A's place John Jaso on 7-day concussion DL
Athletics placed C John Jaso on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Advice: Jaso has been dealing with concussion-like symptoms since early August and the situation got worse this weekend. Geovany Soto was acquired from the Rangers on Sunday to give the A's some needed depth at catcher. Because brain injuries are always unpredictable, there is no exact timetable for Jaso's return.

"I've just kind of been muscling through the games and trying to power through, but the symptoms have kind of escalated these past few days, and it got to the point where it was a little iffy if I could keep going back there behind the plate and catch," he said Sunday.
