    • Nelson Cruz homered twice, doubled and knocked in four runs as the Rangers beat the A's 8-7 on Monday.
Advice: Cruz homered off Dan Straily in the fourth and Jesse Chavez in the fifth, giving him 18 bombs for the year. Only Chris Davis (24) and Miguel Cabrera (19) have more in the AL. If Cruz stays healthy, his career high of 33 homers is probably going down.

    • Orioles recalled LHP Zach Britton from Triple-A Norfolk.
Advice: Britton is starting for the Orioles on Tuesday night against the Tigers. He has a promising 3.28 ERA in 11 starts this season at the Triple-A level but is a risky fantasy play in his matchup Tuesday versus Detroit.

    • Zach Britton will be called up from Triple-A Norfolk to start Tuesday against the Tigers.
Advice: He'll make the start in place of Jason Hammel, who is just getting his strength back following a stomach bug. Britton made one start for the Orioles this season and owns a 3.28 ERA in 11 starts with Triple-A Norfolk. He's a shaky option in mixed leagues against the Tigers.

Advice: Hammel is dealing with a stomach bug and is unlikely to be ready. The Orioles scratched Britton from his scheduled start Sunday, indicating that he'll likely be their choice to fill in if need be. Britton holds a 3.28 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 11 start for Norfolk this season. He allowed six runs over six innings in his lone start for the O's.

    • Rays recalled RHP Jake Odorizzi from Triple-A Durham.
Advice: Odorizzi will be the 26th man for Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox and is slated to start the nightcap. The 23-year-old has allowed 11 runs in 12 1/3 innings in two starts and one relief appearance with the Rays this season and will likely be sent back down to the minors after Tuesday's start. He's someone to keep an eye on for the future.

Advice: The Rays will officially promote Odorizzi on Tuesday night to be their 26th man. The talented young right-hander has a bright future but probably isn't worth messing with for one random outing at Fenway Park. Chris Archer will start the first half of the doubleheader.

Advice: Scutaro is dealing with "mallet finger" in his left pinkie, which is a form of tendon damage. The injury can often take 6-8 weeks to fully recover from, but Scutaro will try to play through it. He had missed the previous six games.

Advice: "Soon," Scutaro said Monday. "Tomorrow. Next day... depends on how the finger reacts (from day to day)." • Edinson Volquez allowed four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings in his start Monday against the Giants.
Advice: Volquez (5-5, 5.84 ERA) struck out six in the no-decision. The right-hander occasionally shows his talent in mixed-league worthy performances, such as his last start against the Braves (one run over seven innings). Far too often, however, he turns in frustrating performances such as Monday's or gets outright shelled. He's a fringy NL-only pitcher.

    • Kevin Youkilis has a herniated disc in his back and will undergo surgery to repair it on Thursday.
Advice: He is expected to need about 10-12 weeks of rest and rehab, which puts his season in jeopardy. It's another brutal blow to the Yankees, who have been without third baseman Alex Rodriguez (hip) all year. It's the same ailment that landed Youkilis on the disabled list at the end of April. He surrendered a leadoff single to Justin Upton and Freddie Freeman ended the game with a 365-foot blast to right field. Advice: Making his first start at first base this season, Duda raised his average 15 points (from .226 to .241). Mets manager Terry Collins has resisted trying Duda at first base in anticipation of an eventual Ike Davis return, but there's no doubt that New York is a better team with Duda at first and Daniel Murphy at second. Advice: Meanwhile, Daniel Murphy has moved back over to second base while Jordany Valdespin is on the bench. • Aaron Harang was tagged for four runs on 12 hits in five innings by the Angels in a loss Monday.
Advice: He struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Harang actually has an outstanding 56/9 K/BB rate and a solid 1.31 WHIP. That's the good news for Seattle management and AL-only owners still holding out hope he'll turn it around. To the naked eye, however, Harang just doesn't have the stuff to get out major league hitters anymore. It's great to eliminate free passes, but it doesn't do much good if the slop you loft over the plate is obliterated all over the park.
