    • Jeff Keppinger delivered a walk-off RBI single in a 4-3 win over the Marlins in 11 innings on Friday.
Advice: Keppinger sneaked it through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded to win it. The veteran infielder went 2-for-5 with two RBI on the night and is hitting .343 (11-for-32) over his last nine games. The recent hot streak has only pulled his batting average up to .210 for the year, but we expect it to continue to rise in the days ahead.

    • Derek Dietrich connected for a two-run homer in Friday's extra-inning loss to the White Sox.
Advice: It was his only hit in five at-bats. Dietrich has held his own in his first taste of the majors, hitting .250 (12-for-48) with two homers, two doubles, six RBI, and a .724 OPS through 13 games. It's very possible Dietrich will force Donovan Solano into a utility role when he returns from the disabled list.

    • Steve Lombardozzi went 3-for-4 with a two-run double in Friday's win over the Phillies.
Advice: The three-hit night pulled his batting average up from .220 to .242 on the year. With Danny Espinosa (wrist) ailing, Lombardozzi should get regular playing time at second base over the next few days. He doesn't excel in any one category, but with his multi-position eligibility, he could be useful in deeper mixed fantasy leagues.

    • Jerry Hairston Jr. (knee, groin) will begin his minor league rehab assignment with High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday.
Advice: Hairston originally landed on the disabled list with a left groin strain earlier this month, but then had a setback when he tweaked his knee. Barring any setbacks, he should be able to rejoin the Dodgers before the end of the month.

    • An MRI on Jerry Hairston Jr.'s knee has revealed tendinitis.
Advice: Hairston is on the DL with a left groin strain, but it appears that the knee might be a bigger issue at the moment. However, he still played in an extended spring training game Monday, so it appears that it's not a significant setback. He could still be ready to return before the end of the month.

    • Danny Espinosa has been playing with a small fracture in his right wrist for the past month.
Advice: It's actually a loose bone chip in his hand. The injury stems from when he was hit by a pitch from Paul Maholm on April 14 and certainly explains his struggles. Espinosa hopes to avoid a trip to the disabled list and possible surgery, but the Nationals plan to rest him for a few days. Steve Lombardozzi will fill in at second base for the time being.

    • Danny Espinosa went hitless in a fourth straight game Tuesday, leaving him with a .159 average in 139 at-bats.
Advice: Maybe more patience would be warranted if Espinosa were healthy, but it's quite possible he needs surgery for the partial rotator cuff tear he suffered last year. Besides, he's just killing the Nationals offense right now. Not only is he batting .159, but he's walked just three times all year. His OBP stands at .186.

    • Jed Lowrie (foot) is out of the Athletics' lineup again Friday.
Advice: Lowrie hasn't played since he was hit in the right foot by Yu Darvish on Tuesday. X-rays came back negative, but he's still dealing with some soreness. Consider him day-to-day for now.

    • An X-ray on Jed Lowrie's right foot came back clean.

  • Sun, May 19
    • Jed Lowrie went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice-fly RBI in Saturday's victory against Kansas City.
Advice: Lowrie pounded the ball in April, batting .333 with a .938 OPS and 15 RBI in 102 plate appearances. The 29-year-old suffered a strained neck at the end of the month and hasn't been the same since, batting .232/.328/.286 with no homers, four RBI and one run scored over 56 May plate appearances. It's possible that the oft-injured infielder is trying to play through a malady that would be better treated by rest.

    • Michael Young was hitless in four at-bats in Friday and has just one RBI over his last 14 games.
Advice: Young has a decent .280 batting average to go along with a .378 on-base percentage, but he has done little else to help in fantasy leagues. Through 47 games, he has just one home run to go along with 10 RBI. With his penchant for ground balls (he had three ground outs on Friday), we're not banking on a power resurgence.

    • Mariners designated INF Robert Andino for assignment.
Advice: Andino gets the boot after batting just .184 (14-for-76) with a 27/7 K/BB ratio in 29 games. Carlos Triunfel has been promoted from Triple-A Tacoma to replace him on the active roster, but the move could set the wheels in motion for Brad Miller to eventually make his way to the majors.

    • Gordon Beckham isn't playing Friday with Triple-A Charlotte due to soreness in his surgically-repaired left hand.
Advice: Beckham had surgery in mid-April to remove the hamate bone from his hand, so the White Sox don't want to take any chances. He's expected to be held out of action until next Wednesday at the earliest.

    • Gordon Beckham (hand) started at shortstop Monday in his third rehab game with Triple-A Charlotte.
Advice: Beckham played shortstop in college and as a prospect, but he has never done so in the majors. Of course, Alexei Ramirez is in the second year of a four-year, $32.5 million contract, so there would have to be an injury or a trade for him to get a look there with the big club. Still, it's an interesting development. Beckham is hitting .462 (6-for-13) with one double and two RBI over three rehab games and should be activated this weekend.

    • Gordon Beckham (hand) tallied three hits Sunday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Charlotte.
Advice: Beckham went 2-for-4 on Saturday in his rehab debut and is looking ready to rejoin the White Sox. But since he's been out so long -- over five weeks -- the second baseman will likely remain on the farm until Friday.

    • Yankees sent INF Alberto Gonzalez outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

    • CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the White Sox have placed infielder Angel Sanchez (back) on waivers.
Advice: Sanchez, a Rule 5 pick, has been on the disabled list for a little over a month with a lower back strain and is seven games into a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte. If he goes unclaimed, he will be offered back to the Angels.

    • Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-4 and hit his fifth homer Wednesday versus the Cardinals.
Advice: With two homers and three doubles among his 13 hits in his last eight games, Gyorko is really coming along now; his average is up to .283 and all five of his homers have come in May. We don't expect him to keep his average up this high -- he strikes out a bit too much right now -- but he's a solid play in mixed leagues.

    • Phillies placed 2B Chase Utley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21, with a right oblique strain.
Advice: General manager Ruben Amaro described the strain as "very mild," so, all things considered, it's pretty good news for the Phils. Amaro is hopeful that Utley will be ready when his two weeks are up, but it's possible he could be out as long as four weeks. Freddy Galvis will function as the primary second baseman while Utley is out. The team will make a corresponding move prior to Friday's game.

    • Chase Utley (rib cage) will undergo an MRI on Thursday.
Advice: Utley was scratched from Tuesday's lineup after he felt pain and a burning sensation in his right rib cage after taking a swing during batting practice. Rib cage and oblique injuries tend to linger, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him land on the disabled list at this point. Get a backup plan in place in fantasy leagues.

    • Chase Utley was a late scratch from Tuesday's lineup after feeling discomfort in his right side during batting practice.
Advice: He'll be re-evaluated on Wednesday before the Phillies determine how much time he might miss. If it's an oblique issue that Utley is dealing with, obviously there's a good chance it could lead to a trip to the disabled list. Freddy Galvis is taking his spot at second base Tuesday.

    • D.J. LeMahieu is expected to take over as the Rockies' starting second baseman following the demotion of Josh Rutledge.
Advice: Rutledge's recent slump and LeMahieu's .412/.444/.529 batting line early on, along with his solid defense, has convinced the Rockies to make a change. LeMahieu is a .294 career hitter over 125 games, but he offers next to nothing in the power and speed departments, making him worthy of picking up only in NL-only formats.

    • Logan Forsythe (foot) will begin playing in extended spring training games on Friday.
Advice: Forsythe has been taking batting practice for a week with no issues and is ready to take the next step. He's been out all season with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, so he'll need plenty of rehab at-bats before returning.

    • Rockies optioned 2B Josh Rutledge to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Advice: Manager Walt Weiss indicated recently that he was going to stick with Rutledge through his slump, but evidently he had a change of heart. The second baseman sports just a .242/.298/.357 batting line for the season and is hitting only .206/.250/.294 over his last 11 games. The Rox appeared poised to go with D.J. LeMahieu at second base for now.

    • Martin Prado went 0-for-4 on Wednesday and has fallen into a 2-for-19 slump.
Advice: Prado is still hitting for a better average this month and he did in April, but that's not saying much. He's gone 12 straight games without scoring a run. He has two runs scored and four RBI in 20 games overall for the month. And not only is his season OBP a lousy .283, but he's been caught on three of his four steal attempts. Good thing the Diamondbacks gave him that four-year, $40 million deal before some team could blow them out of the water this winter.

    • Daniel Descalso went 3-for-3 with his first career grand slam and an RBI double in the Cardinals' 10-2 rout of the Padres on Tuesday.
Advice: Descalso's slam followed an intentional walk to Jon Jay. Descalso entered the game with an ugly .197/.265/.289 line, and he probably wouldn't have been in the lineup if not for David Freese's thumb injury. The home run was his seventh in 813 major league at-bats.

    • Adeiny Hechavarria went 0-for-4 at the plate in Wednesday's loss to the Phillies, watching his average drop to .193.
Advice: We can hardly blame Hechavarria for not getting a hit against Cliff Lee, but his 0-for-4's have hardly been a rare occurrence. The slick-fielding shortstop had a seven-RBI game earlier this month shortly after returning from the disabled list, but his offense has pretty much been non-existent otherwise.

    • Daniel Murphy went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI as the Mets' leadoff hitter on Wednesday.
Advice: Murphy's OBP dropped below .300 10 days ago, but he's been red hot since, picking up 19 hits in 10 games. Now his average stands at .302, and while he's far from an ideal leadoff hitter, it's not as though the Mets have better options.

    • Jonathan Herrera is batting .283/.327/.370 through 49 plate appearances.
Advice: If his slash numbers hold, Herrera will finish with the best offensive season of his career, topping the .694 OPS he mustered in 2010. Unfortunately, the utility infielder has scuffled in the field recently, recording three errors in his last 12 games.

    • Kelly Johnson hit his eighth home run of the season on Tuesday to help the Rays beat the Blue Jays 4-3.
Advice: After a down year in 2012, Johnson is now hitting .273/.345/.508 on the year with eight home runs and 25 RBI. The 31-year-old has seen time at second base and in the outfield this season, and his versatility means he's in the lineup more often than not. He looks on track for a bounceback season.
