    • White Sox optioned RHP Deunte Heath to Triple-A Charlotte.
Advice: Heath appeared in four games with the White Sox and posted an 11.12 ERA. Donnie Veal will likely be called up to replace him on the active roster.

    • Burch Smith gave up five runs and three homers in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Nationals.
Advice: Smith struck out eight and walked just one, but there was no overcoming the homers. He has a 15.63 ERA after two starts, so his rotation spot is tenuous at best.

    • Jorge De La Rosa was tagged for five runs in five innings Friday in a win over the Giants.
Advice: De La Rosa gave up nine hits and one walk and only registered one strikeout. It was quite a contrast for the southpaw, as he entered Friday's outing with a 14-inning scoreless streak and 12 scoreless frames at Coors Field this season. Still, the Rockies' offense powered him to the victory. De La Rosa is 5-3 with a 3.58 ERA through nine starts this season, but he needs more strikeouts to be interesting again in fantasy leagues.

    • Despite taking a comebacker off his pitching hand, Drew Storen pitched a scoreless 10th inning Friday against the Padres for his first save.
Advice: Aided by a Ryan Zimmerman throwing error, Rafael Soriano took a blown save in the ninth. Storen got his chance in the 10th after a Chad Tracy homer and got the job done, though not before allowing a couple of singles. The first of those was a hard shot up the middle that deflected off his pitching hand. Storen, though, remained in after a couple of warmups. His ERA sits at 4.41 currently, and he's no threat to Soriano's job as is.

    • Drew Storen allowed a run in the eighth inning Sunday, blowing the Nationals' 1-0 lead over the Cubs.
Advice: Chicago went on to win it 2-1 after scoring off Rafael Soriano in the ninth. Storen has posted a disappointing 4.73 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 13 1/3 frames this season.

    • Madison Bumgarner was knocked around for nine runs (seven earned) over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Rockies.
Advice: Bumgarner blew leads of 4-0 and 5-4, including a grand slam by Jordan Pacheco in a five-run fifth inning. The seven earned runs allowed were a season-high and fell one short of his career-high. The southpaw struck out four and walked a pair in the loss. Bumgarner has been money in seven out of his nine starts this season, so we're expecting better results next time out against the Nationals at home.

    • The White Sox are expected to call up left-hander Donnie Veal from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday.
Advice: Veal struggled with the White Sox earlier this season, but hasn't allowed a run in four appearances (eight innings) at the Triple-A level. The 28-year-old will provide bullpen depth as a left-handed specialist.

    • Jarrod Parker pitched seven innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against the Royals on Friday.
Advice: The A's didn't go ahead until the bottom of the eighth, so Parker was denied the win after his best performance so far this season. He struck out five and walked two tonight. After opening up 0-4 with an 8.10 ERA, he's 2-1 with a 4.07 ERA his last four times out.

    • James Shields took a complete-game loss after giving up two runs in eight innings Friday against the A's.
Advice: Shields struck out nine, matching his season high. Unfortunately, he gave up his fifth and sixth homers of the season. Shields dropped to 2-4 on the season. The Royals have scored a total of five runs in his four losses.

    • Chris Sale struck out 12 in 7 2/3 scoreless innings Friday in the White Sox's 3-0 win over the Angels.
Advice: Poor C.J. Wilson got matched up with Sale for the second time in six days and took another tough loss. Sale allowed just four hits and struck out 19 while pitching 16 2/3 scoreless innings over the course of the two outings. He's allowed one run in 24 career innings against the Angels.

    • Chris Sale had an abscessed tooth removed on Monday, but it's not expected to impact his availability for his next scheduled start Friday against the Angels.
Advice: Sale admitted that he's feeling it a little, but fortunately he still has multiple days to get well. The 24-year-old southpaw tossed a one-hit shutout Sunday night against the Angels and holds a 2.88 ERA and 49/12 K/BB ratio in 56 1/3 innings over eight starts this season.

Advice: Hideki Okajima has been called up from Triple-A Sacramento to replace him on the active roster. Resop has an ugly 6.00 ERA and 13/10 K/BB ratio over 18 innings this season. He's making $1.35 million, so it's likely he'll pass through waivers.

    • Jose Valverde shut the Rangers down in the ninth inning on Friday, preserving a one-run lead and earning his fourth save of the season.
Advice: He did surrender a one-out walk, but was able to avoid further damage. It was a nice bounceback effort for the veteran closer, as he blew his first save of the season in his last opportunity against the Indians on Sunday. Despite missing all of spring training, he has looked relatively sharp in the early going, converting four of his five save chances while compiling a 1.13 ERA and 0.62 WHIP.

    • Jose Valverde rebounded from his first blown save of the season to pitch a scoreless ninth inning against the Astros on Tuesday.
Advice: It wasn't a save situation and it was against the Astros, after all, but it was still a positive sign for the right-hander. He struck out two in the outing, his first since blowing the save against the Indians on Sunday. He's still the Tigers closer going forward.

    • Jaime Garcia got the win Friday night against the Brewers despite giving up six runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Advice: Hey, fantasy owners will take it. Garcia allowed six hits and a walk while all the damage was courtesy of a pair of two-run homers by Aramis Ramirez. The southpaw has allowed 11 runs over his last two starts, increasing his ERA from 2.25 to 3.58 on the year. Still, he'll carry a 5-2 record into a start against the Padres next week in San Diego.

    • Kevin Slowey was knocked around in Friday's loss to the Diamondbacks, surrendering six runs on seven hits in only three innings of work.
Advice: Slowey walked one and struck out one in the brief outing. His undoing on this evening was his inability to keep the ball in the yard, as he allowed three home runs, including a pair of two-run shots to Paul Goldschmidt. Despite his 1-4 record, Slowey has actually pitched very well for the Marlins this season, posting a 3.44 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 37/12 K/BB ratio over his first 52 1/3 innings. He'll attempt to get back on track when he takes on the Phillies at home on Wednesday.

    • Nick Tepesch pitched decently in a losing effort against the Tigers on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits over his five innings.
Advice: Tepesch also walked three and struck out one in the contest. He shut down the vaunted Tigers offense through the first four innings, but they broke through in the fifth courtesy of an RBI double from Miguel Cabrera and a sacrifice fly from Alex Avila. Tepesch has done a decent job thus far for the Rangers, compiling a 3-4 record, 3.98 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 31/13 K/BB ratio over 43 innings. He'll get the Athletics next at home on Wednesday.

    • Koji Uehara notched his first save of the season in Friday's 3-2 win over the Twins in 10 innings.
Advice: The Red Sox pulled ahead in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Jonny Gomes and Uehara sat the Twins down in order to finish off the victory. Junichi Tazawa is supposed to be the fill-in closer, but he was unavailable after throwing 25 pitches over two innings on Thursday night. Oddly enough, Tazawa has yet to get a save opportunity with Andrew Bailey (biceps) and Joel Hanrahan (elbow) both sidelined. And with Bailey due back on Monday, his window is closing.

    • Rick Porcello was impressive in Friday's victory over the Rangers, allowing only one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Advice: Porcello uncharacteristically punched out six on the evening while allowing only one walk. The only damage against him on the evening was a solo homer off the bat of Geovany Soto in the fifth inning. After a brutal beginning to the season, the 24-year-old right-hander has rebounded nicely, posting four consecutive quality starts. He'll look to extend that streak to five when he takes on the Twins at home on Thursday.

    • Padres designated RHP Thad Weber for assignment.
Advice: The move clears a spot for Tim Stauffer on the 40-man roster. Weber made three appearances with the Padres earlier this season and owns a 3.93 ERA and 26/4 K/BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings over six starts in Triple-A. He could draw some interest on waivers.

    • Joel Peralta filled in admirably with Fernando Rodney potentially unavailable on Friday, recording the final four outs to preserve a two-run lead and earn his first save of the season.
Advice: After the Orioles erupted for six runs in the eighth inning, Peralta was called upon to get the final out of the inning. He then stayed on to pitch a perfect ninth inning and preserve the wild win. With Fernando Rodney struggling, Peralta is certainly worth stashing if speculating for saves in mixed leagues.

    • Trevor Cahill was terrific in Friday's victory over the Marlins, surrendering only one run on five hits over his eight innings.
Advice: Cahill walked four and struck out four on the night. The only blemish on his evening was an RBI single by Rob Brantly in the seventh inning. The 25-year-old righty has been extremely impressive in the early part of the season, posting a 2.33 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 43/24 K/BB ratio over 58 innings. He'll look to continue that dominance when he does battle against the Rockies in Colorado on Wednesday.

    • Brett Anderson was diagnosed with a navicular stress fracture of his right foot and will be shut down for four weeks.
Advice: Rough news for Anderson, who just can't seem to stay healthy. The 25-year-old southpaw is set to be reevaluated after four weeks, so his actual return to the Athletics likely won't be until around the early part of July. Dan Straily is filling his spot in the rotation for now, but the A's could turn to Sonny Gray if he continues to struggle.

    • Brett Anderson (ankle) isn't sure when he'll be ready to come off the disabled list.
Advice: Anderson allowed six runs over 3 2/3 innings during a start with Double-A Midland on Sunday and is still feeling some discomfort in his right ankle. There was hope that he would be ready to rejoin the A's rotation on Friday, but it appears that he will need a little more time.

    • Hiroki Kuroda was dominant Friday night against the Blue Jays, giving up two hits over eight shutout innings as part of a 5-0 victory.
Advice: Continued excellent from Kuroda, who issued one walk while striking out five. The veteran right-hander has delivered quality starts in each of his last seven outings and now has a 1.99 ERA for the year. He's quietly one of the best pitchers in the American League.

    • Hiroki Kuroda has not allowed more than three earned runs in a start this season.
Advice: Since surrendering five earned runs over 6 2/3 innings in his first two starts, Kuroda is 4-1 with a 1.64 ERA, a .541 OPS against and a 27/8 K/BB rate over six starts and 44 innings. Kuroda is earning every penny of his $15 million salary and remains a must-start pitcher in all fantasy formats.

    • Nationals manager Davey Johnson confirmed Friday that Ross Detwiler will not make his scheduled start against the Giants on Monday due to a lower back injury.
Advice: Detwiler was required to leave his most recent start on Wednesday due to back spasms. No word yet on whether he'll require a trip to the disabled list. Craig Stammen is expected to replace Detwiler in the rotation while he's out.

    • Nationals manager Davey Johnson said he's "probably not that confident" that Ross Detwiler (back) will be able to make his next start.
Advice: It's not clear whether a disabled list stint will be required, but it sounds like Detwiler won't be used at least one time through the rotation. The lefty underwent an MRI Thursday, though the specific results of it are not known. The Nats are expected to turn to their bullpen for a spot start, with Craig Stammen viewed as the likely favorite over Zach Duke to get the nod.

Advice: Detwiler looked like he might have tweaked his back while heading over to cover first in the third inning. • The Cubs will wait to see how Matt Garza (lat) feels and how his bullpen session goes Saturday before they make a decision about activating him.
Advice: Garza declared himself ready to rejoin the Cubs' rotation after six scoreless innings during Thursday's rehab start. It's probably just a formality at this point before the team announces that he'll rejoin the rotation next week. Carlos Villanueva is the likeliest candidate to be demoted to the bullpen.

    • Matt Garza (lat) allowed just two hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out six over six scoreless innings in Thursday's rehab start with Triple-A Iowa.
Advice: The Cubs wanted Garza to show that he can go at least six innings if activated, so the performance should be enough to convince the club that he's ready. Assuming he stays on schedule, Garza's season debut will likely come next week in Pittsburgh.

    • Matt Garza (lat) could rejoin the Cubs' rotation after Thursday's rehab start with Triple-A Iowa.
Advice: Garza lasted just 3 1/3 frames in his last rehab start, but he did get his pitch count up to 66. Manager Dale Sveum said the righty threw with a lot of "aggressiveness" in his bullpen session on Monday, and it's all about building up his stamina at this point. "We just have to get him built up so he can at least go out there for [six innings]," Sveum said.

    • Edinson Volquez allowed five runs over five innings in the Padres' loss to the Nationals on Thursday.
Advice: Volquez walked four and struck out seven. After struggling mightily through his first three starts of the season, Volquez posted a 2.59 ERA over his last five entering Thursday. Perhaps he was due for a stinker. He's no better than a matchup play in standard formats. Next week's outing against the Cardinals doesn't look attractive in that regard.
