    • Tosses three innings
Bivens allowed a run on four hits and a walk over three frames in a no-decision Friday. He struck out two during the win over Cleveland.

Advice: Bivens entered the game in the second inning and was tagged with a solo homer by Josh Naylor in the fourth. Over his last five outings, Bivens has given up two runs in 12 innings, dropping his season ERA to 2.65 through 17 frames. He should continue working as a bulk reliever or spot starter as necessary. • Athletics release left-hander Sean Newcomb
      Athletics released LHP Sean Newcomb.

Advice: Newcomb, 31, struggled mightily during his time with the Athletics this season, posting a miserable 6.30 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and a 7/8 K/BB ratio over 10 innings in seven appearances out of the bullpen. He’s talented enough that he should be able to find a minor league opportunity elsewhere if he wants another shot at resurrecting his career. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:57 pm

    • Marlins activate Bryan Hoeing from 15-day IL
Marlins activated RHP Bryan Hoeing from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: Hoeing will jump right back into the fire on Friday night, drawing a start in the Marlins’ series opener against the White Sox in Miami. Prior to landing on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, the 27-year-old hurler had registered a 1.83 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and a 16/5 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings in his 11 appearances. He shouldn’t be expected to work more than an inning or two on Friday and isn’t a recommended streaming option. Rotoworld Yesterday, 1:26 pm

    • Officially activated
Hoeing (hamstring) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and is starting Friday's game against the White Sox.

Advice: Hoeing was shelved May 3 due to a strained left hamstring, and after making five rehab appearances since June 14, he'll rejoin the active roster. While the 27-year-old is listed as Miami's starting pitcher, he shouldn't be expected to handle a typical starter's workload considering he hasn't completed three innings in any of his rehab outings and was used out of the bullpen before being injured. That being said, Hoeing has been utilized as a starter in previous seasons and could see multiple starts given the Marlins' numerous pitching injuries. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:22 pm

    • Likely to work in bulk relief
Bivens is expected to serve as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Erik Miller in Friday's game against the Guardians, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Advice: Bivens tossed five innings of one-run ball in his first MLB start in his most recent appearance this past Sunday against the Dodgers, but he'll be available out of the bullpen for what's essentially his second turn through the rotation. The right-hander will most likely shift into a more traditional bullpen role after Friday, as the Giants should get one or both of Kyle Harrison (ankle) or Blake Snell (groin) back from the injured list by next week. • Throws bullpen session
Assad (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Assad is just a little over a week removed from landing on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm extensor strain, so it's a good sign that he's already been cleared to throw off the bump. The Cubs have a doubleheader July 13, and Assad being ready by that date could be in the cards if all goes well. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:20 am

    • Drawing start Friday
Hoeing (hamstring) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday versus the White Sox, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Hoeing has been used as a starter plenty in the past but has been deployed exclusively in relief in 2024 aside from a one-inning "start" on his rehab assignment. The 27-year-old threw 49 pitches over 2.2 frames in his most recent rehab appearance, so the Miami bullpen will be needed Friday. It's unclear whether the Marlins intend to have Hoeing gradually build up his pitch count in his ensuing starts, or if he'll just be making a spot start Friday before moving to the bullpen. • Bryan Hoeing (hamstring) set to return on Friday
Bryan Hoeing (hamstring) will start on Friday against the White Sox.

Advice: Hoeing will be officially activated from the injured list to take the ball for Friday’s series opener against the White Sox. The 27-year-old righty has been out since early May recovering from a left hamstring strain. Rotoworld Thursday, 2:02 pm

    • Throws off mound
Leiter (forearm) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Jared Wyllys of CHGO Sports reports.

Advice: Leiter is tracking toward a live batting practice session later this week and a return to the Cubs' bullpen next week. The reliever is eligible for activation July 9, and it sounds like he could be back by then without a rehab assignment. Rotowire.com Thursday, 11:47 am
