    • On bench Saturday
Smith is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Royals, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Advice: Smith will give way to Austin Barnes behind the dish for the second time in three days, with Barnes batting ninth Saturday. In 256 plate appearances, Smith owns a .848 OPS with 10 homers and a 16.0 percent strikeout rate. Rotowire.com 54 minutes ago

    • Nursing neck issue
Verlander was scratched from his start Saturday versus the Tigers due to neck discomfort, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Verlander was geared up to face his former team Saturday, but he'll now likely have to have his turn in the rotation skipped completely as a result of the neck issue. With Sunday's scheduled starter Spencer Arrighetti now pushed up to toe the rubber Saturday, Houston will likely have to look to an option off their major-league roster to fill in for the series finale. Left-hander Eric Lauer is with Triple-A Sugar Land and he could be an option to be called up Sunday. In the meantime, it's unclear if Verlander's injury will require a stint on the injured list or not, but the 41-year-old's next opportunity to return to the mound will be next weekend in Baltimore at the soonest. • Justin Verlander scratched due to neck discomfort
Justin Verlander was scratched from Saturday’s start against the Tigers due to neck discomfort.

Advice: No word yet on the severity of the neck ailment that led to Verlander being scratched from a highly-anticipated outing against his former team, but Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters they don’t believe it’s an injured list situation. Espada added that the 41-year-old veteran righty has been pitching through neck soreness for the last two or three weeks, which certainly helps explain his recent struggles. It’ll be rookie Spencer Arrighetti taking the ball in his place. There should be an additional update on his status at some point this weekend. He’ll presumably undergo some additional testing to determine the extent of the lingering issue. Stay tuned. Rotoworld Today, 9:33 am

    • Goes on paternity leave
The Guardians placed Ramirez on the paternity leave list Saturday.

Advice: Ramirez will likely miss his team's remaining two games this weekend in Toronto before rejoining them for the start of a homestand Tuesday following Monday's scheduled off day. Johnathan Rodriguez is taking Ramirez's roster spot and Daniel Schneemann is getting a start at third base Saturday versus the Blue Jays. Rotowire.com Today, 9:25 am

    • Guardians place José Ramírez on paternity list
Guardians placed 3B José Ramírez on the paternity list.

Advice: Ramírez will miss the remainder of Cleveland’s weekend series in Toronto to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. It’ll be Johnathan Rodriguez coming up to take his active roster spot. The 31-year-old fantasy superstar, who holds a sublime .864 OPS with 18 homers and 11 steals in 291 plate appearances over 66 games this season, should be back from paternity leave early next week. • Justin Verlander scratched from start vs. Tigers
Justin Verlander has been scratched from Saturday’s start against the Tigers.

Advice: Uh-oh. No word yet on the reason for Verlander being scratched from a highly-anticipated outing against his former team. However, it’s worth noting that the 41-year-old veteran has struggled in each of his last two outings. It’ll be rookie Spencer Arrighetti taking the ball in his place. There should be an additional update on his status shortly. Rotoworld Today, 9:06 am

    • Scratched from start
Verlander (undisclosed) will no longer start Saturday's contest against the Tigers, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports.

Advice: Verlander was set to return to the mound Saturday, but he has now been scratched for an undisclosed reason. More information on his status will likely be provided ahead of the contest, but Spencer Arrighetti will now toe the rubber for the Astros against Detroit. Arrighetti was originally expected to start Sunday's series finale, so Houston may need to find a fill-in option if Verlander is sidelined with an injury. Rotowire.com Today, 9:00 am

    • Logs steal in loss
Langford went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI in Friday's 3-2 loss to Seattle.

Advice: Langford had a run-producing single in the first inning then put himself in scoring position with a steal. It was his third steal in the last two games and fourth over the last five contests. Since returning from a hamstring injury in late May, Langford is batting .306/.346/.429 with four extra-base hits, nine RBI, four steals and four runs scored over 13 games. • Deployed in eighth inning
Munoz walked one and struck out three in a scoreless and hitless eighth inning to earn a hold in Friday's 3-2 win over the Rangers.

Advice: Munoz has been dealing with a back issue for most of June so far, but he's still seen high-leverage work when available. The right-hander was deployed in the eighth inning Friday against the top of the Rangers' lineup, while Ryne Stanek got the call in the ninth and earned the save. Munoz has picked up three holds and a loss over his last four outings, but it seems this is less about his injury and more about a matchups-based approach to the late innings by manager Scott Servais. Munoz has a 1.55 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 41:10 K:BB with 12 saves and six holds through 29 innings this season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:32 pm
