  • Rangers have 'checked in' on M's Saunders
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Rangers have checked in with the Mariners about Michael Saunders.

Advice: Crasnick reported a few weeks ago that the M's are prepared to shop Saunders "hard" this winter, and Texas reportedly has some interest. Saunders is arbitration-eligible for the second time after an injury-plagued 2014. The 28-year-old outfielder has put up some promising numbers in the past. Rotoworld.com

  • Jayson Nix elects to become a free agent
Jayson Nix has elected to become a free agent.

Advice: Nix was outrighted off the Royals' 40-man roster and then rejected an assignment to Triple-A Omaha, instead opting to test the open market. The 32-year-old infielder is a .212/.282/.345 career hitter in the majors. Rotoworld.com

  • Braves have talked to A.J. Pierzynski
MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports that the Braves have talked to free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

Advice: They've also been in contact with David Ross as part of an ongoing search for a veteran backup to young catcher Christian Bethancourt. Pierzynski batted just .251/.288/.337 in 362 plate appearances this past season between the Red Sox and Cardinals. The 37-year-old should come cheap. Rotoworld.com

  • Josh Willingham, 35, retiring from baseball
Josh Willingham has retired from baseball.

Advice: The 35-year-old outfielder informed ESPN of that decision on Monday afternoon. Willingham probably could have done pretty well for himself on the market this winter, but he'll hang up his cleats to spend more time with his family. "After praying on my decision many times and talking to my wife, my father and ex-players who have gone through the same process toward the end of their careers, I have decided to retire," Willingham said. "I'm honored to have played for as many years as I have, and I feel even luckier to walk away on my own terms instead of having the decision made for me." Rotoworld.com

  • David Ross drawing interest from Braves
David Ross is drawing interest from the Braves, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Advice: Ross would give the Braves a solid veteran backup to pair with young starting catcher Christian Bethancourt. The 37-year-old Ross batted just .184/.260/.368 in 2014 for the Red Sox, but he's regarded as a good defender and excellent clubhouse presence. A one-year deal should get it done for Atlanta. • Jays showing interest in acquiring John Jaso
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Blue Jays have shown interest in acquiring John Jaso from the Athletics.

Advice: The A's are currently fielding calls on some of their left-handed bats, and have a logjam behind the plate and at designated hitter which are the two spots Jaso could be utilized. The Jays see him as a potential backup to Russell Martin. The A's have reportedly inquired about Sean Nolin who could be included in any potential deal. Rotoworld.com

  • Athletics acquire slugger Ike Davis from Bucs
Athletics acquired 1B Ike Davis from the Pirates for international slot money.

Advice: The 27-year-old slugger was designated for assignment by the Pirates earlier in the week. In 143 contests between the Mets and Pirates in 2014, Davis slashed .233/.344/.378 with 11 homers and 51 RBI in 360 at-bats. With his ability to draw a walk and hit for power from the left-hand side of the plate, he should be able to carve out a platoon role with the A's. Rotoworld.com

  • A's designate Andrew Brown for assignment
Athletics designated OF Andrew Brown for assignment.

Advice: Brown, who was claimed off waivers from the Mets at the end of October, becomes the roster casualty of the A's acquiring Ike Davis on Sunday. The 30-year-old will look to latch on elsewhere. Rotoworld.com

  • Athletics to acquire Ike Davis from Pirates
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics have acquired Ike Davis from the Pirates for international slot money.

Advice: The Pirates designated Davis for assignment earlier in the week and were content flipping him for anything they could get. Davis still possesses massive power potential and could find his way into the A's lineup fairly regularly against right-handed pitching. Rotoworld.com

  • Indians designate Scott Barnes for assignment
Indians designated LHP Scott Barnes for assignment.

Advice: The team acquired Charles Brewer from the Diamondbacks for cash considerations on Saturday. The designation of Barnes was their way of making room on the roster. Barnes pitched 8+ innings with the Indians last season and allowed seven runs over that stretch. Rotoworld.com

  • Blanco takes coaching job with Cubs
Diamondbacks assistant hitting coach Henry Blanco has accepted a coaching job with the Cubs.

Advice: Blanco's position under Joe Maddon will be as a quality assurance coach. He will also work closely with the catchers. The departure of the former catcher leaves the Diamondbacks without a Spanish speaker on the coaching staff, something the team plans on addressing. Rotoworld.com

  • Cisnero signs minor league contract with Reds
Reds signed RHP Jose Cisnero to a minor league contract.

Advice: Cisnero was outrighted off the Astros' 40-man roster earlier this month. Cisnero, 25, had Tommy John surgery in May, so he won't be ready by the time spring rolls around. Rotoworld.com

Rockies signed RHP Justin Miller to a minor league contract.

Advice: The 27-year-old hurler cracked the big leagues for the first time in 2014, posting a 5.11 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 5/2 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings with the Tigers. He'll function as organizational bullpen depth in Colorado. Rotoworld.com

Advice: The 26-year-old right-hander joined the Angels organization midway through the 2014 season after pitching the first half of the year in the Korean Baseball Organization. He posted a 5.09 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 45/17 K/BB ratio over 76 frames at Triple-A Salt Lake. He'll function as organizational rotation depth for the D'Backs. Rotoworld.com

Advice: The 35-year-old backstop saw limited time with the Phillies during the 2014 season, slashing .238/.273/.286 in 21 at-bats over 10 games. He'll continue to provide catching depth and a valuable veteran presence in the minor leagues. Rotoworld.com

  • 'Plenty of interest' in David Ross
Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that there has been "plenty of interest" in David Ross.

Advice: However, he adds that there's "nothing imminent" in terms of Ross signing on somewhere. The veteran catcher batted just .184/.260/.368 in 50 games this past season, but his bat has been more potent in the past and he's well-regarded as a receiver and clubhouse guy. Rotoworld.com

  • Pirates designate Ike Davis for assignment
Pirates designated 1B Ike Davis for assignment.

Advice: He was going to be non-tendered, so he'll now have a little extra time to find a new home. Davis batted .233/.344/.378 with 11 home runs and 51 RBI over 143 games between the Mets and Pirates in 2014. His days as a starting first baseman might very well be over. Rotoworld.com

  • John Jaso cleared for baseball activities
Athletics general manager Billy Beane said Wednesday that John Jaso (concussion) has been cleared for all baseball activities.

Advice: That means he'll be able to catch again, but it remains to be seen how often he'll be behind the plate next season. Jaso's last two seasons have ended prematurely due to concussion issues, so putting him behind the plate at all is a dangerous proposition. The A's are considering giving him some reps at first base in spring training. Rotoworld.com
