  • Twins prospect Stewart scratched from start
Twins prospect RHP Kohl Stewart was scratched from his scheduled start at Low-A Cedar Rapids on Wednesday due to shoulder soreness.

Advice: Twins director of minor league operations Brad Steil said Stewart is dealing with "a little shoulder soreness," an affliction he dealt with toward the end of the 2013 season as well. It's not a huge cause for concern for the No. 4 overall pick in 2013, and he should be back on the mound sooner than later. Stewart owns a 2.42 ERA through 81 2/3 innings of work at the minor league level this season.

  • Phelps picks up W in a rain-shortened start
David Phelps held the Rangers to one run over five innings and earned the win in a rain-shortened game on Wednesday.

Advice: The game was called with one out in the bottom of the fifth. The Yankees already had the lead, of course. Phelps allowed five hits -- the only extra-base hit was a triple to Leonys Martin -- without issuing a walk and striking out three. The right-hander hasn't lost since June 7. Now with a 3.77 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and a 86/37 K/BB ratio, Phelps will open up a road series against the Rangers on Monday.

  • Callaspo (hamstring) could be back Sunday
A's manager Bob Melvin said Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) could be activated Sunday when first eligible.

Advice: It will come right down to the wire, as Tuesday was the first day he was able to take batting practice since being placed on the DL. The veteran infielder may not need a rehab stint before being activated.

Twins designated RHP Matt Guerrier for assignment.

Advice: Guerrier had a 3.86 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 12/10 K/BB ratio in 28 innings out of the Minnesota bullpen. The 35-year-old right-hander could draw interest on waivers.

  • Bauer notches quality start but gets loss
Trevor Bauer notched a quality start with three runs allowed over six innings but took a loss against the Twins Wednesday.

Advice: He struck out seven on the day but surrendered an RBI single in the third, an RBI double in the fifth and a home run in the sixth. Bauer gave up six hits and walked a pair on the day. It was the right-hander's fourth straight quality start, as he's lowered his ERA from 4.42 to 3.93 over that stretch. He'll take on the Mariners at home next week.

  • Gus Schlosser recalled from Triple-A
Braves recalled RHP Gus Schlosser from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: He'll be up for a couple days while Anthony Varvaro is on paternity leave. Schlosser has a 4.50 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over 12 innings with the Braves this season.

  • Carlos Ruiz activated from disabled list
Phillies activated C Carlos Ruiz from the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Advice: Ruiz wasn't supposed to be back until Friday, but the Phils decided to make the move a couple days early. The veteran backstop was been out since late June with post-concussion symptoms, but he got through five rehab games with no issues and is ready to go.

  • Chris Young returns to Mets' lineup
Chris Young is back in the Mets' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: Young missed Tuesday's contest after exiting Monday with a left calf cramp. The veteran outfielder is hitting just .202/.288/.352 over 75 games for the Mets this season.

  • Chris Leroux called up by Yankees
Yankees purchased the contract of RHP Chris Leroux from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Advice: Leroux was designated for assignment by the Yankees back in May after allowing five runs on five hits and a pair of walks in one inning of work. He's getting another chance now but will be used in low-leverage innings.

  • Ricky Nolasco to throw 'pen session Sun.
Ricky Nolasco (elbow) will throw a bullpen session on Sunday.

Advice: Nolasco has been long-tossing this week as he works his way back from flexor pronator stiffness and is ready to test things out from the bump. There's no timetable for his return, but his situation will clarify if Sunday's 'pen session goes well.

  • Schoop collects two hits and homers vs LAA
Jonathan Schoop went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's win over the Angels.

Advice: The blast was Schoop's eighth of the year and put him up to 26 RBI. Despite the homer, the second baseman is batting just .220/.256/.338 this season and doesn't merit serious fantasy consideration.

  • Gonzalez pitches into 8th, picks up fifth win
Miguel Gonzalez allowed just three hits and two runs in seven and two-thirds innings against the Angels on Tuesday.

Advice: While Gonzalez did walk four, he was able to keep the Angels off the board until the eighth inning, when Mike Trout launched a two-run homer. Gonzalez has made a habit of going deep into games as of late. He'd gone eight innings in each of his last two starts. This effort dropped his ERA to 3.91. If he's able to continue this recent trend, he's somebody to keep an eye on in deep AL-only leagues. Next time out he'll face the Mariners.

  • Erasmo Ramirez optioned to Triple-A
Mariners optioned RHP Erasmo Ramirez to Triple-A Tacoma.

Advice: He struck out 10 while allowing two runs over seven innings against the Mets Tuesday but gets the boot because the M's needed to clear room for Wednesday starter Taijuan Walker. Ramirez will be back up later this season.

  • Ramirez fans 10 in seven innings vs. Mets
Erasmo Ramirez allowed two runs and gave up five hits in his seven innings of work against the Mets on Tuesday.

Advice: Ramirez made the most of his recent call-up, striking out a season-high ten and walking just two as he lowered his ERA to 4.35. He had the misfortune of facing off against Jacob deGrom, who matched him pitch-for-pitch and ended up with the win, dropping Ramirez to 1-5 on the season. We'll see if the quality effort leads to a few more starts. Prior to this start, his last work had come against the Red Sox in late June.

  • Carroll touched for 11 hits, five runs vs. KC
Scott Carroll was roughed up for 11 hits and five runs over five innings in a loss to the Royals on Tuesday.

Advice: The right-hander, who had allowed just three hits and zero runs over his past two starts combined, gave up five extra-base hits, including a home run, in the loss. He also walked two and struck out three. Carroll owns a 4.52 ERA and 1.53 WHIP through 73 2/3 innings, and he's a non-factor for fantasy purposes going forward.

  • Miguel Gonzalez recalled from Triple-A
Orioles recalled RHP Miguel Gonzalez from Triple-A Norfolk.

Advice: Gonzalez will start on Tuesday against the Angels after being optioned prior to the All-Star break so that he could continue pitching. He has a 4.04 ERA and 1.45 WHIP on the season and isn't a good streaming option Tuesday.

  • Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) takes BP
Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) took a successful round of batting practice Tuesday.

Advice: It's the first time he's done so since landing on the DL. Callaspo has also done some running, though he's yet to run the bases. He's expected to be activated in the middle of next week if all goes well.

  • Erasmo Ramirez recalled for Tuesday start
Mariners recalled RHP Erasmo Ramirez from Triple-A Tacoma.

Advice: Ramirez will start for the Mariners on Tuesday night against the Mets. The 24-year-old right-hander has considerable upside, but he owns a 4.58 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 11 starts this season at the major league level and probably isn't worth the risk in standard fantasy formats.

  • Young leaves game with calf cramp
Chris Young left Monday's game against the Mariners in the eighth inning due to a left calf cramp.

Advice: Young suffered the injury running to first base in the top of the eighth inning. The hope is that it's not a big deal, but the Mets should know more Tuesday.

  • Ramirez to start Tuesday against the Mets
Erasmo Ramirez will be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to start Tuesday against the Mets.

Advice: This confirms the speculation over the past day or so. Ramirez owns a 4.58 ERA over 11 starts with the Mariners this season. He's a shaky option in fantasy leagues.

  • Miguel Gonzalez to return Tuesday vs. ANA
Miguel Gonzalez will return to the Orioles' starting rotation on Tuesday against the Angels.

Advice: Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk before the All-Star break so that he could get in work during the long layoff. He has a 4.04 ERA and 1.45 WHIP on the season and isn't a good fantasy play against the Halos.

  • Alberto Callaspo could return next week
Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) thinks he'll be ready for activation just a couple days after he's eligible next Sunday.

Advice: It's possible that Callaspo will play a few rehab games before the A's activate him. The veteran infielder has been on the shelf since mid-July with a strained right hamstring.

  • Nolasco could throw off mound this week
Ricky Nolasco (elbow) could throw off a mound by the end of the week.

Advice: Nolasco will play catch from 120 feet on Monday before progressing to mound work if all goes according to plan. The right-hander has been shut down the last couple weeks with flexor pronator stiffness in his right elbow, but he's coming along nicely and should rejoin the Twins' rotation sometime next month if he can avoid setbacks.

Erasmo Ramirez is expected to be recalled to start on Tuesday against the Mets.

  • Carlos Ruiz could be activated Friday
Carlos Ruiz (concussion) could be activated from the disabled list on Friday.

Advice: The thought had been that Ruiz would return early this week, but apparently the Phillies want to keep the catcher on his rehab assignment a bit longer. Ruiz went 1-for-4 at the plate while catching seven innings Saturday in his third rehab game for High-A Clearwater.

  • Trevor Bauer fans five in victory over Tigers
Trevor Bauer picked up his fourth victory of the season on Friday, limiting the Tigers to three runs on six hits over his six innings of work.

Advice: The hard-throwing young right-hander punched out six on the night while walking one. He is beginning to look more comfortable in his role in the Tribe's rotation, and currently sports a 3.89 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 75/28 K/BB ratio over 78 2/3 innings. He'll take on the Royals in Kansas City his next time out.

  • Phelps goes six-plus innings in victory
David Phelps yielded three runs (two earned) over 6 1/3 innings Friday in a 4-3 win over the Reds.

Advice: Two of the three runs scored on solo homers from Brayan Pena. Otherwise, Phelps was very effective, allowing six hits and one walk while notching seven strikeouts. He now has a 3.87 ERA over 14 starts this season and should continue to have appeal as a matchup play as long as he sticks in the rotation.

  • Stewart fires five shutout innings
Twins prospect RHP Kohl Stewart scattered four hits over five scoreless innings Thursday, striking out three batters without issuing a walk for Low-A Cedar Rapids.

Advice: The No. 4 overall pick in the 2013 draft, Stewart has impressed this year in his full-season debut, with a 2.42 ERA, .230 opponents' batting average and 58-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 81 2/3 innings for Cedar Rapids. The 19-year-old hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a game over his last eight starts, and he owns a 1.86 ERA and 26-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio during that span. Though he hasn't missed as many bats as expected, Stewart has been difficult to barrel (.599 opponents' OPS) and he's consistently kept the ball on the ground (1.81 GO/AO).
