    • Diamondbacks agree to deal with Pennington
Diamondbacks avoided arbitration with INF Cliff Pennington by agreeing to a one-year, $3.275 million contract.

Advice: The veteran infielder slashed .254/.340/.350 with a pair of homers and 10 RBI in 68 contests with the Diamondbacks in 2014. He'll reprise his utility role in 2014, serving as a fill-in option at shortstop, second base and third base. Rotoworld.com

    • Dan Uggla played through concussion in 2014
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Dan Uggla played through an undetected concussion last season.

Advice: It's not clear when Uggla suffered the concussion, but Cafardo says the condition "was confirmed by doctors this offseason." While it's hard to entirely blame Uggla's hideous .149/.229/.213 batting line in 2014 on the concussion issue, it's certainly something worth noting. Uggla inked a minor league deal with the Nationals on Friday and could get a chance to compete for their second base job. Rotoworld.com

    • Rafael Furcal suffers torn hamstring
Dionisio Soldevila of ESPNDeportes.com reports that Rafael Furcal will miss the Dominican Winter League playoffs after tearing his hamstring.

Advice: It's not clear which hamstring he tore, but it's obviously bad news for Furcal after he missed nearly all of the 2014 season with left hamstring issues. A timetable for his rehab isn't known at this time, but it would now seem unlikely that Furcal is able to land a contract before spring training. The 37-year-old infielder has played just nine games over the last two seasons due to injury. Rotoworld.com

    • Nationals sign Dan Uggla to minor league deal
Nationals signed 2B Dan Uggla to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: General manager Mike Rizzo has history with Uggla, as he drafted him back in 2001 when he was Director of Scouting for the Diamondbacks. Uggla will turn 35 in March and batted just .149/.229/.213 in 157 plate appearances last season. There's a good possibility he's done, but he did at least land in a good spot, as the Nats have an opening at second base. That said, it's unlikely that they're done shopping for upgrades at the position. Rotoworld.com

    • Rays could trade Ben Zobrist
FOX Sports' Jon Morosi writes that "there's a decent chance" the Rays will trade Ben Zobrist before Opening Day.

Advice: It reads as speculation, but it makes a lot of sense given how active the Rays have been on the trade front this offseason. Zobrist turns 34 in May and will make $7.5 million in 2015 before hitting free agency. His versatility would make him an attractive target for a number of teams and should fetch Tampa Bay a nice haul. Morosi lists the Mets, Nationals, Mariners, Rangers, Cubs, Reds, and Twins among the teams who could be a fit. Rotoworld.com

    • Nationals sign Ian Stewart to minors deal
Nationals signed 3B Ian Stewart to a minor league contract.

Advice: Stewart was recently with the Angels, but elected to become a free agent in October after the team outrighted him to Triple A. He appeared in 24 games in 2014, hitting just .176/.22/.382 with two homers and seven RBI. While the numbers aren't great, Stewart has the opportunity to compete for a backup role behind starter Anthony Rendon. Rotoworld.com

    • Marco Scutaro (back) undergoes fusion surgery
Marco Scutaro underwent fusion surgery of the L2 and L3 in his back Sunday and will be sidelined for 4-6 months.

Advice: This comes after Scutaro appeared in just five games this past season due to a chronic back problem. The 39-year-old is owed $6 million in 2015, but there's a real chance his tenure with the Giants is over, if not his career. Rotoworld.com

    • Cubs outright Logan Watkins to AAA Iowa
Cubs sent INF Logan Watkins outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Watkins was designated for assignment last week. He is a .233/.269/.301 career hitter in 110 major league plate appearances and is no longer on the Cubs' 40-man roster. Rotoworld.com

    • Chase Utley expected to remain in Philly
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro has indicated that Chase Utley still has no desire to waive his no-trade clause.

Advice: "I've had some dialogue with Wolfie [agent Joel Wolfe] but frankly, he doesn't want to go anywhere," Amaro said. "He has no desire to go anywhere... He wants to honor his contract and that's how we have to perceive it." The Phillies are obviously in rebuilding mode, but it appears that Utley would rather stay where he's comfortable than go to a potential playoff contender. The veteran second baseman will make $10 million in 2015 and has $45 million in three vesting options from 2016-18. Rotoworld.com

    • Phillies showing interest in Asdrubal Cabrera
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports that the Phillies could have interest in free agent infielder Asdrubal Cabrera.

Advice: The Phillies have a large vacancy to fill at the shortstop after dealing Jimmy Rollins to the Dodgers, and Cabrera is one of the top names available on the free agent market. According to Crasnick though, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. would first have to shed some payroll to create the requisite flexibility to add the veteran infielder. Rotoworld.com

    • Braves pick up Jace Peterson from Padres
Braves acquired INF Jace Peterson from the Padres in the Justin Upton trade.

Advice: A former sandwich round pick, Peterson batted .307/.402/.447 with 16 steals between Double- and Triple-A last season and got a cup of coffee in the majors. He's a pretty solid middle infield prospect but didn't land in a great situation in Atlanta with Andrelton Simmons holding down shortstop and Jose Peraza on his way at second base. Rotoworld.com

    • Shawn O'Malley released by Angels
      Angels released INF/OF Shawn O'Malley.

Advice: The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Johnny Giavotella. O'Malley, who will turn 27 later this month, is a career .258/.351/.338 hitter in the minors and got a cup of coffee with the Angels at the end of last season. Rotoworld.com

    • Logan Watkins designated for assignment
Cubs designated INF Logan Watkins for assignment.

Advice: Watkins, 25, has posted decent numbers in the minors but has hit just .233/.269/.301 over 110 plate appearances in the majors. He's versatile and young, so some team might claim him on waivers. Rotoworld.com

    • Angels acquire Johnny Giavotella from Royals
Angels acquired 2B Johnny Giavotella from the Royals in exchange for RHP Brian Broderick.

Advice: Giavotella had been designated for assignment on Thursday. The Angels plan to go with Josh Rutledge at second base after trading away Howie Kendrick, but Giavotella isn't a bad insurance option. The 27-year-old never received a long-term look with the Royals but is a career .305/.378/.438 hitter in the minors. Rotoworld.com

    • A's release veteran INF Nick Punto
      Athletics released INF Nick Punto.

Advice: Punto, 37, batted just .207/.296/.293 this season for the A's while battling some injuries. The A's will still be responsible for his $2.75 million salary next season. Someone will get Punto a shot due to his versatility, but he might have to settle for a minor league deal. Rotoworld.com

    • Martin Prado/Nate Eovaldi swap is official
Marlins acquired INF/OF Martin Prado, RHP David Phelps and cash considerations from the Yankees in exchange for RHP Nathan Eovaldi, 1B/OF Garrett Jones and RHP Domingo German.

Advice: The Yankees are sending $6 million to the Marlins to help offset the salaries. Prado is expected to play third base for the Marlins, which means Casey McGehee is either headed to the bench or the trade block. Prado's fantasy value obviously takes a big hit going from Yankee Stadium to Marlins Park. Rotoworld.com

    • Phillies have interest in Rafael Furcal
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Phillies are "kicking the tires" on Rafael Furcal.

Advice: Freddy Galvis is expected to take over at shortstop following the trade of Jimmy Rollins, but Furcal could be added as a backup option. The 37-year-old infielder was limited to just nine games for the Marlins this season due to leg issues after missing all of 2013 following Tommy John surgery. Rotoworld.com
