  • Rockies option Michael Toglia to Triple-A
Rockies optioned INF/OF Michael Toglia to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Advice: This qualifies as a bit of a surprise, but there wasn't much room left for Toglia on the season-opening roster following the Rockies' late-spring additions of veterans Jurickson Profar and Mike Moustakas. The 24-year-old slugger will head back to the minors for some additional seasoning, but his time is certainly coming in Colorado. NBCSportsEDGE.com 1 minute ago

  • Cole Irvin set for O's debut on Sunday vs. Red Sox
Cole Irvin will start the Orioles' third regular-season game on Sunday against the Red Sox.

Advice: Irvin will make his Baltimore debut at Fenway Park following Kyle Gibson and Dean Kremer in the previous two games of the series. He'll presumably be followed by Kyle Bradish and Tyler Wells when the Orioles head to Texas for their second series of the year. NBCSportsEDGE.com 5 minutes ago
  • Will open year in High-A
Merrill will open the 2023 season with High-A Fort Wayne, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Advice: There was some chatter about Merrill making the jump to Double-A San Antonio, but that'll be put on hold for at least a little bit. The 19-year-old top shortstop prospect slashed .339/.395/.511 with six home runs, 40 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 38 runs scored over 55 games last summer between the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and Low-A Lake Elsinore. He was the No. 27 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft out of a high school in Maryland. Rotowire.com 6 minutes ago
  • Guardians agree to extension with Andrés Giménez
Jeff Passan of ESPN reports the Guardians and second baseman Andrés Giménez are in agreement on a seven-year, $106.5 million contract extension.

Advice: Passan adds that the long-term agreement also includes a club option for the 2031 season. The deal buys out his three remaining arbitration-eligible seasons and five additional free agent years. The 24-year-old second baseman was an integral component of last year's postseason run, batting .297/.371/.466 with a career-high 17 home runs and 20 stolen bases across 557 plate appearances. • Granted release by Yankees
Ortega was released by the Yankees on Tuesday, Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors reports.

Advice: The Yanks haven't publicly revealed Ortega's status yet, but Adams hears that he was told he would not make the roster and, as a result, requested and was granted his release. Presumably, that means Estevan Florial has officially made the team. Ortega will now look to catch on elsewhere. Rotowire.com 13 minutes ago

  • Rangers re-sign Sandy León to minors contract
Rangers re-signed C Sandy León to a minor league contract.

Advice: León has opted to stick around with the Rangers as emergency catching depth a few days after being released from his previous minor league contract. NBCSportsEDGE.com 16 minutes ago

  • Xzavion Curry makes Guardians' Opening Day roster
Xzavion Curry will be on the Guardians' season-opening roster.

Advice: Curry will step into Hunter Gaddis' vacated spot in Cleveland's season-opening bullpen following a late-spring injury to burgeoning ace Triston McKenzie. The 24-year-old righty will be recalled prior to Thursday evening's contest against the Mariners after being optioned earlier this week to Triple-A Columbus. NBCSportsEDGE.com 17 minutes ago

  • Works two-inning sim game
Bundy threw a two-inning simulated game Tuesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Advice: Bundy is in the process of getting stretched out after just landing a minor-league contract from the Mets this past Saturday. He should be able to slide into the rotation at Triple-A Syracuse sometime in mid-to-late April and will function as organizational starting depth for New York in 2023. • Guardians talking extensions with several players
Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports the Guardians are in advanced negotiations with multiple players on contract extensions.

Advice: Meisel adds that they've discussed long-term deals with Andrés Giménez, Amed Rosario, Triston McKenzie, Steven Kwan and Trevor Stephan. It's unclear how close they are to a finalized agreement with any of them. Stay tuned. NBCSportsEDGE.com 19 minutes ago
