  • Jonathan Schoop takes BP Monday in Baltimore
Jonathan Schoop (knee) will take batting practice with the Orioles on Monday.

Advice: The Orioles considered activating him Monday but instead it looks like he'll continue his rehab at Triple-A Norfolk. Ryan Flaherty has filled in at second base during Schoop's absence.

  • Decision coming on Jonathan Schoop (knee)
The Orioles are expected to make a decision on Jonathan Schoop (knee) on Monday.

Advice: Schoop will either be activated from the disabled list or continue his rehab with Triple-A Norfolk. He's been rehabbing at Double-A Bowie but the Baysox are going on the road and the Orioles would prefer to have Schoop closer to Baltimore. Schoop's 20-day rehab window expires on July 8. The 23-year-old hasn't appeared in the major leagues since April 17.

  • Hernandez's four-hit day contributes to a win
Cesar Hernandez singled four times in as many at-bats, helping the Phillies in a win over the Nationals in the back end of Sunday's doubleheader.

Advice: It's the second four-hit game of Hernandez's career, with the other occuring on September 28, 2013. The Phillies, despite scoring eight runs, only brought him home once, at the end of their four-run second inning. Hernandez has been hitting well as of late, logging multi-hit efforts in three of his last five games. With Chase Utley on the shelf, he should be a regular in the lineup. He's hitting .271/.361/.361 in 163 plate appearances.

Angels optioned INF Kyle Kubitza to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Advice: The 24-year-old struggled in his limited time with the Angels, slashing .214/.267/.214 with one RBI and a 12/2 K/BB ratio in 28 at-bats. He should be back when rosters expand in September.

  • Middlebrooks leaves game with apparent injury
Will Middlebrooks was removed from Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks with an apparent injury.

Advice: Middlebrooks appeared to roll his ankle on a bat in the Diamondbacks on-deck circle while chasing down a foul pop fly. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, but will be evaluated by team trainers. The Padres should have an update on his status after the game.

  • Paredes homers, reaches four times in win
Jimmy Paredes went 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Indians.

Advice: Paredes reached base all four times he came to the plate, walking in his other two plate appearances. Paredes hit a two-run homer in the third inning before doubling and scoring in the sixth. Paredes continues to hit near the top of the Orioles' order in what has already been a career year for the journeyman. The 26-year-old is hitting .326/.352/.523 with nine homers, 36 RBI and 34 runs scored.

  • Cory Spangenberg diagnosed with bone bruise
Cory Spangenberg has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left knee.

Advice: It's much better than the initial diagnosis of a sprained knee. Spangenberg, who suffered the injury in Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks, is hopeful of avoiding the disabled list.

  • Gregorio Petit optioned to Triple-A
Yankees optioned INF Gregorio Petit to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Murphy (quad) expected to return from DL Tue.
Daniel Murphy (quad) is expected to return from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Advice: He'll remain on his minor league rehab assignment with High-A St. Lucie through the weekend and will join the Mets after Monday's off-day. Murphy is expected to function as the team's everyday third baseman until David Wright returns.

  • Jung Ho Kang not in Pirates lineup Saturday
Jung Ho Kang is once again not in the Pirates starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: It's the second straight day that Kang has been out of the lineup. Jordy Mercer, perhaps getting rewarded for his walkoff double on Friday, is in the lineup again as the Pirates shortstop.

  • Ruben Tejada back in lineup on Saturday
Ruben Tejada (elbow) is in the Mets starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Tejada was removed from Friday's game after being hit by a pitch and sustaining a left elbow contusion. He is once again at the hot corner and batting second for the Mets on Saturday.

  • Joey Gallo starting in center field Saturday
Joey Gallo is making his first career start in center field on Saturday.

Advice: Gallo has been scuffling at the plate after a hot start, but the Rangers are still trying to find creative ways to get his bat in the lineup. The 21-year-old has never logged an inning in center field in his professional career, so it'll be interesting to see how the experiment works out. He'll be flanked by Ryan Rua and Shin-Soo Choo in the corners.

  • Marlins recall Miguel Rojas from Triple-A
Marlins recalled INF Miguel Rojas from Triple-A New Orleans.

Advice: The 26-year-old infielder has the ability to play three different positions in the infield and will provide depth on the bench for the Marlins. He was hitting .302/.345/.431 with three homers and 23 RBI in 64 games at Triple-A.

  • Cory Spangenberg goes 3-for-3
Cory Spangenberg went 3-for-3 with two steals and two runs scored Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Spangenberg had been cold of late, leading to some speculation that the Padres might give Jedd Gyorko another try, but he really helped the cause tonight. We still don't believe he's the Padres' best option at second base, but he was Bud Black's preferred choice and Pat Murphy has stuck with him so far.

  • Jake Lamb goes 0-for-4 in loss
Jake Lamb went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Friday in the loss to the Padres.

Advice: Lamb was so hot before going down with a foot injury in April. Since coming off the DL on June 6, he's just 9-for-52 with no homers and an 18/3 K/BB ratio. The Diamondbacks will probably give him another week before trying anything different, but if he continues to struggle this mightily, a stint in Triple-A might be for the best.

  • Plouffe cranks two-run homer vs. Brewers
Trevor Plouffe was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run Friday against the Brewers.

Advice: It was his 10th home run of the season and his first since June 10. Even with Friday's performance, Plouffe is hitting just .202 this month. He'll likely be happy to see the calendar flip in a few days.

  • Tejada diagnosed with left elbow contusion
Ruben Tejada was diagnosed with a left elbow contusion after X-rays came back negative on Friday.

Advice: Tejada was removed from Friday's game after being hit by a pitch and the Mets wanted to rule out any serious injury. He's considered day-to-day and should return at some point over the weekend.

Jonathan Schoop (knee) could be activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

Advice: That's only if Adam Jones (shoulder) has to go on the DL. If Jones doesn't, Schoop is likely to return Monday. Working his way back from a PCL tear in his left knee, Schoop is batting .273/.304/.773 over six rehab games and will play in a seventh game Friday.

Daniel Murphy (quad) went 0-for-3 with a walk in his latest minor league rehab game with High-A St. Lucie on Thursday.

Advice: He's expected to rejoin the Mets over the weekend, perhaps as early as Friday. Murphy will play third base upon his return with the possibility that Wilmer Flores will be shifted over to second base. Before hitting the disabled list on June 5, Murphy was hitting .283/.335/.414 with four homers and 29 RBI in 55 games.

  • Jimmy Paredes homers as Orioles win slugfest
Jimmy Paredes went 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI in Sunday's victory over the Blue Jays.

Advice: Paredes' three-run dinger capped off a seven-run second inning for the Orioles. Baltimore wound up coughing up that lead but eventually got it back and won. Paredes has rebounded a bit after a long slump, batting .385 with a couple longballs over his last seven contests.

  • Murphy (quad) won't return until next weekend
Daniel Murphy (quad) won't be activated from the disabled list until next weekend.

  • Joey Gallo not in Rangers lineup on Saturday
Joey Gallo is not in the Rangers starting lineup for Saturday's game against the White Sox.

Advice: It's just a day of rest for the young slugger against tough southpaw Carlos Rodon. Through his first 16 games in the big leagues, Gallo is slashing .224/.318/.500 with five homers and 10 RBI, though he has struck out 27 times in only 66 plate appearances. Ryan Rua is getting the start in left field while Adam Rosales handles the hot corner.

Jimmy Paredes is not in the Orioles starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays.

  • Trevor Plouffe plates four runs to lead Twins
Trevor Plouffe went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI on Friday, leading the Twins to a 7-2 victory over the Cubs.

Advice: Plouffe got the Twins on the board with an RBI groundout in the first inning and plated another with an RBI double in the third. His two-run double in the fifth inning pushed their advantage to 5-1, and they'd never look back. He has been very productive in the middle of the Twins lineup, slashing .253/.319/.451 with nine homers and 38 RBI.
