  • Marlins could extend 3B Casey McGehee
MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that the Marlins are likelier to extend Casey McGehee than trade him.

Advice: McGehee is a sell high candidate if there ever was one, but the Marlins evidently want to keep him around. The third baseman is eligible for arbitration this winter for a final time, so the Marlins wouldn't necessarily have to extend McGehee in order to keep him around for another year. McGehee, who has drawn interest from the Mariners, among other clubs, is batting .322 with 56 RBI this season. Rotoworld.com

  • Mariners interested in Casey McGehee
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Mariners are among the teams interested in Casey McGehee.

Advice: McGehee has played his way into being a nice trade chip for the Marlins, batting .322 with 56 RBI. The Mariners are intent on finding a right-handed bat but have mostly been looking at outfielders. McGehee has played just one game in the outfield as a pro, but he could be used in the DH spot, with Corey Hart shifting to the outfield. Rotoworld.com

  • Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) takes BP
Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) took a successful round of batting practice Tuesday.

Advice: It's the first time he's done so since landing on the DL. Callaspo has also done some running, though he's yet to run the bases. He's expected to be activated in the middle of next week if all goes well. Rotoworld.com

  • Taijuan Walker to start for M's on Wednesday
Taijuan Walker will be recalled to start on Wednesday versus the Mets.

Advice: Walker has put up a 3.60 ERA while striking out nine over 10 innings in his two starts for the Mariners this season. With James Paxton (lat) slated to return pretty soon, Walker likely has to pitch well in order to remain in the rotation. Still, he makes for a nice streaming option Wednesday at the very least. • Phillies recall Darin Ruf from Triple-A level
Phillies recalled OF Darin Ruf from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Ruf went 1-for-10 with four strikeouts in a short stint with the Phillies earlier this season. He'll act as depth at first base and both corner outfield spots. Rotoworld.com

Indians optioned RHP C.C. Lee to Triple-A Columbus.

Advice: Lee has a 4.26 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 12 2/3 innings this season for the Indians. He was sent to the minors Tuesday to clear a spot for starter Danny Salazar. Rotoworld.com

  • Rays recall Jeff Beliveau from AAA Durham
Rays recalled LHP Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A Durham.

Advice: Beliveau will give the Rays some needed bullpen depth while Joel Peralta recovers from an illness. The 27-year-old southpaw has a 3.98 career ERA in the majors. Rotoworld.com

  • Dodgers option Paco Rodriguez to Triple-A
Dodgers optioned LHP Paco Rodriguez to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Advice: Rodriguez has allowed 10 hits and five earned runs in 8 1/3 innings this season at the major league level. He was sent back to the minors Tuesday to clear a spot for Josh Beckett, who is back from a hip injury. Rotoworld.com

  • Rangers activate Martinez for Tuesday start
Rangers activated RHP Nick Martinez from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: Martinez missed a little over two weeks with a left side injury. He will return to the Rangers' starting rotation on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. The 23-year-old righty owns a rough 5.10 ERA and 1.69 WHIP this season. Rotoworld.com

  • Cubs activate Bonifacio from 15-day DL
Cubs activated INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: Darwin Barney has been designated for assignment in a corresponding roster move. Bonifacio has been sidelined since mid-June with a strained right oblique and will return to a .261/.307/.340 batting line to go along with 13 steals and 29 runs scored over 61 games. Rotoworld.com

  • Blue Jays recall INF Goins from Triple-A
Blue Jays recalled INF Ryan Goins from Triple-A Buffalo.

  • Padres acquire Solarte in Headley deal
Padres acquired INF Yangervis Solarte and RHP Rafael De Paula from the Yankees for 3B Chase Headley and cash considerations.

Advice: The Yankees picked Solarte up for nothing over the winter and managed to turn him into an upgrade at third base. Pretty nice work by GM Brian Cashman. For San Diego, this was mostly about getting anything for Headley, who will be a free agent after the season. A qualifying offer wasn't a realistic option, as he likely would have accepted a one-year deal in the range of $15 million. Solarte could see some time at third base down the stretch in San Diego, but his days of fantasy relevancy are likely already behind him. Rotoworld.com

  • Report: Yanks have checked in on John Danks
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees have checked in with the White Sox about the availability of left-hander John Danks.

Advice: There's nothing to indicate that the two sides are close to a deal, but Yankees general manager Brian Cashman hasn't made any secret about his desire to add starting pitching. Danks owns a 4.35 ERA and 87/46 K/BB ratio over 124 innings this season, so he's not quite the pitcher he once was. There's still around $34 million remaining on his contract, which runs through 2016. He has a six-team no-trade list, but it's unclear if the Yankees are on it. Rotoworld.com

  • Fujikawa (elbow) pitches in Triple-A
Kyuji Fujikawa (elbow) allowed one run on two hits over one inning Monday in his first rehab appearance with Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Fujikawa, who is currently making his way back from Tommy John surgery, moved his rehab up to Triple-A on Monday after he made six scoreless appearances between rookie ball and Class A Wayne County. He could be ready to join the Cubs' bullpen after a handful of appearances in Triple-A. Rotoworld.com

  • Ryan Goins to be called up from Triple-A
Ryan Goins is expected to be called up from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.

Advice: The Blue Jays will also call up top prospect Aaron Sanchez. No word yet on the corresponding roster moves involved. Goins began the year as Toronto's starting second baseman, but he batted just .150/.203/.217 over 24 games before being demoted. Still, he's highly-regarded for his defense and could have value as a backup infielder. Rotoworld.com

  • Niese struggles in loss Mariners on Monday
In his return from the disabled list, Jon Niese allowed four earned runs over six innings in the Mets' loss to the Mariners on Monday.

Advice: Out since early July with shoulder inflammation, Niese punched out six and issued two free passes. The Mariners weren't fooled by his stuff, collecting 11 hits. Regardless, New York is happy to have Niese back, if for no other reason than to showcase him. The left-hander's contract is extremely team-friendly, paying out just $16 million over the next two seasons, with the Mets also in possession of a pair of club options totaling $21 million after that. Outside of a rusty return from layoff, Niese has been remarkably consistent; this was the first time he'd yielded more than three earned runs in a start. Now 5-5 with a 3.13 ERA, Niese heads to Milwaukee this weekend. Rotoworld.com

  • T.J. House gives up three runs to Twins
T.J. House surrendered three runs in five innings Monday in a no-decision against the Twins.

Advice: House didn't lose his spot as the Indians' fifth starter despite being sent down for the All-Star break, but his job could be in jeopardy pending Danny Salazar's outing on Tuesday. It'd be best for the Indians if Salazar steps up and claims the spot. Rotoworld.com

  • Walker could start Wednesday vs. Mets
Taijuan Walker could be called up to start Wednesday against the Mets.

Advice: The Mariners have pushed back Hisashi Iwakuma and Felix Hernandez to start Thursday and Friday against the Orioles in Seattle, which leaves Wednesday up in the air. Walker is currently scheduled to start Wednesday in Triple-A, so it doesn't take a major leap of logic to say he's the likely option for the assignment. Rotoworld.com

  • Indians recall T.J. House for Monday start
Indians recalled LHP T.J. House from Triple-A Columbus.

  • Mets activate Jon Niese for Monday start
Mets activated RHP Jon Niese from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: He'll rejoin the Mets rotation on Monday when he takes on the Mariners in Seattle. Before hitting the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, he posted a terrific 2.96 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 74/28 K/BB ratio over his first 103 1/3 frames. Rotoworld.com

  • Danks smoked by Astros, but takes no-decision
John Danks allowed seven runs over 4 1/3 innings, but took a no-decision as the White Sox lost 11-7 on Sunday.

Advice: Danks has been prone to this type of blow-up outing, but had looked better as of late, entering Sunday's start with a 2.73 ERA over his previous four outings. The Astros were able to bang out 12 hits, including home runs by Matt Dominguez and Jose Altuve. Danks did not issue a walk and struck out four as he watched his ERA balloon to 4.35. He'll try to bounce back against the Twins on the road on Friday. Rotoworld.com

  • McGehee homers to help Marlins top Giants
Casey McGehee homered Sunday in the Marlins' 3-2 victory over the visiting Giants.

Advice: It was a two-run shot to deep left-center field off Giants starter Tim Lincecum. McGehee is batting .322 with 56 RBI in 96 games this season, but Sunday's home run was only his second. Part of that is the park he calls home. Marlins GM Dan Jennings said earlier this month that McGehee will not be on the block at this year's July 31 trade deadline, so don't expect the power to improve all that much down the stretch. Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) thinks he'll be ready for activation just a couple days after he's eligible next Sunday.

  • Mariners prospect Taijuan Walker solid in AAA
Mariners right-handed pitching prospect Taijuan Walker went five innings for Triple-A Tacoma, scattering seven hits, three walks, and one hit batsman while allowing two runs and striking out one batter.

Advice: Walker allowed only one extra base hit and induced three double plays, which allowed him to hold Reno to only two runs. Walker threw 52 of his 90 pitches for strikes (57.8 percent), which is acceptable. The main knock on Walker is his perpetual struggles with command, which is common for young pitchers. Rotoworld.com

  • Rays want Walker in potential Price deal
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Rays have talked to the Mariners about Taijuan Walker in a potential trade involving David Price.

Advice: It's no surprise, as they had similar discussions over the winter before the M's ultimately decided against dealing Walker. However, now that they're in the thick of the American League Wild Card race, it appears they may be more willing to part with the young hurler. Heyman says the Rays want Walker "plus two or three other top young players" for Price. The Mariners have also talked to the Rays about Ben Zobrist. Rotoworld.com

  • Taijuan Walker not close to rejoining Seattle
Taijuan Walker's next start at Triple-A Tacoma has been pushed back from Thursday to Friday.

Advice: Walker is now off schedule to reclaim the fifth spot in the Mariners' rotation next Tuesday against the Mets. "Taijuan just needs a little more time," Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik said Thursday. "He got up here this year, fairly quick (after battling a shoulder injury). That was, more or less, out of necessity. What we'd like to do is have Taijuan get a few more games under his belt. Rotoworld.com
