  • Santiago allows 1 ER in loss to the A's
Hector Santiago allowed two runs (one earned) over five innings in Friday's no-decision to the A's.

Advice: Santiago came in on a roll, undefeated over his last 11 trips to the mounds (eight starts, 2.45 ERA). Tonight, he struck out five and walked two to extend his streak. The left-hander, who was so bad earlier this year that he was banished to the bullpen and then to Triple-A, has bled his ERA all the way down to an emaciated 3.38. Santiago welcomes Miami to an AL venue next week.

  • Tigers demote LHP Ian Krol
Tigers optioned LHP Ian Krol to Triple-A Toledo.

Advice: The Tigers need fresh arms, so down goes Krol again. He allowed five runs -- one earned -- in two-thirds of an inning in Friday's massacre, and he's sporting a 4.96 ERA for the year.

  • Collmenter works 8+ frames in gem vs. Pads
Josh Collmenter fired 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball (none earned), striking out eight, to baffle the Padres in a 5-1 win on Friday.

Advice: He let only four runners grace the base paths, and they all came via singles. Two of them occurred in the ninth inning, with Alexi Amarista crossing home on a Miguel Montero passed ball after Collmenter was lifted for Matt Stites. This performance came out of left field, as it was the first time Collmenter has cracked six innings worked, allowed less than three earned runs, or earned a win in over a month. Collmenter is nothing special, but he's been an appreciated back-end starter in NL-only formats, going 9-7 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.25 WHIP.

White Sox optioned LHP Eric Surkamp to Triple-A Charlotte.

Advice: Surkamp pitched in three straight games after being recalled on August 16, allowing one run over 1 2/3 innings. The Sox will make a corresponding move to bring back Javy Guerra on Saturday.

  • Greene gives up nine hits, three runs Friday
Shane Greene allowed nine hits and three runs over five innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Friday.

Advice: Eight of the nine hits were singles, but the one extra-base hit was a three-run home run by Jose Abreu in the first inning. On the plus side, Greene struck out seven while walking two. Greene has been a nice find for the Yankees this season, as he now has a 3.17 ERA and 46/16 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings this season. He's got a tough test on deck, facing the Tigers in Detroit on Wednesday.

  • Carrasco strikes out eight, earns no-decision
Carlos Carrasco struck out eight batters and allowed one run in six innings of work against the Astros on Friday.

Advice: Carrasco's WHIP has been threatening to drop below 1.00 because of outings like this, which lowered it to 1.04. He only surrendered two hits, to go with two walks. The only damage on his line came in the form of a solo Marwin Gonzalez home run in the sixth inning. He left the game after throwing 90 pitches. The Indians will continue to stretch Carrasco. This marks Carrasco's third straight outing in the rotation. He has only allowed one run over those three starts. He has a 3.14 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 79/20 K/BB ratio this season. Unfortunately, Cody Allen allowed four runs in the ninth inning, depriving Carrasco of a deserved win. Carrasco will try to keep rolling against the White Sox next time out.

  • Stroman knocked around for six runs in 5 IP
Marcus Stroman gave up six runs (five earned) on ten hits in five innings against the Rays on Friday.

Advice: This marked back-to-back rough outings for Stroman. Last time out, he allowed five runs and recorded just two outs against the White Sox. Stroman at least lasted five innings on Friday, but the end result wasn't much better. Beyond the ten hits allowed, he struck out six and walked three. Evan Longoria got the Rays' scoring party started with a solo home in the second. After that, it was a series of doubles and singles that did Stroman in. Stroman's now allowed at least five runs in three out of his last four outings. The rough stretch has pushed Stroman's ERA over 4.00. Unless the Blue Jays opt to hold Stroman back, the talented youngster will try to rebound against the Red Sox in his next start.

Cory Luebke (elbow) has started playing catch from 45 feet three times per week.

  • Dylan Axelrod to get another start
Reds manager Bryan Price said Friday that Dylan Axelrod will likely be recalled to get another start.

Advice: Axelrod allowed just two runs over six innings in a start on Sunday but was sent down because the club needed a fresh bullpen arm. He'll get another chance next week after David Holmberg was rocked on Thursday. With Homer Bailey's (elbow) return nowhere in sight, Axelrod could be in the rotation for a while.

  • Charlie Leesman released by White Sox
White Sox released LHP Charlie Leesman.

Advice: He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment, but the White Sox just decided to cut him loose. Leesman owns a 4.10 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 66/32 K/BB ratio over 68 innings at Triple-A Charlotte this season. With just a couple weeks left in the minor league season, he might opt to just wait until the offseason to sign somewhere.

  • Dylan Axelrod fans seven in Reds debut
Dylan Axelrod pitched well in his Reds debut on Sunday, allowing just two runs on seven hits over six innings of work.

Advice: Axelrod racked up seven strikeouts on the night while issuing only one free pass. He departed with a 4-2 lead and in line for the victory, but the Reds bullpen was unable to oblige. He'll remain in the rotation for as long as Homer Bailey is sidelined, and is worth a look as a matchup play for next weekend's start against the Braves.

  • Santiago strong vs. LAA, but gets no-decision
Hector Santiago got a no-decision, allowing one run over six innings as the Angels lost 3-2 in walk-off fashion to the Rangers on Sunday.

Advice: Santiago pitched well, giving up the lone run on Rougned Odor's RBI single in the fifth. He was in line for the win until Huston Street blew the save in the ninth. Santiago limited the Rangers to four hits and a walk while striking out five. The lefty hasn't been much of an innings-eater, but has otherwise had a strong season, sporting a 3.46 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and an 83/37 K/BB ratio. He will take the hill on Friday in Oakland against the Athletics next.

  • Carrasco dominant over seven innings vs. O's
Carlos Carrasco pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball against the Orioles in Saturday's 6-0 win.

Advice: Carrasco only allowed six hits in the game. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Carrasco has always been a pitcher who has had the "stuff," but he's finally putting up a season befitting of his talent. The Indians have used Carrasco in both the rotation and the bullpen. Saturday's was Carrasco's second straight start, as the Indians don't have many options and want to see if Carrasco's sub-3.00 bullpen ERA might finally translate over to rotation gold. On the season, Carrasco's ERA is 3.36 to go with a stellar 1.04 WHIP.

  • Greene fans 10 as Yankees defeat the Rays
Shane Greene limited the Rays to two runs over six innings Saturday in a 3-2 Yankees victory.

Advice: Greene struck out 10 batters and issued only one walk in yet another impressive outing. He was however stuck with a no-decision because the Yankees didn't take the lead for good until the top of the ninth. Greene boasts a 2.91 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. • Stroman gets just two outs in loss to ChiSox
Marcus Stroman had a miserable night on the hill in Friday's loss to the White Sox, allowing five runs on five hits while recording just two outs in the contest.

Advice: It was the shortest start by any Blue Jays starter this season. Stroman needed 37 pitches just to get the two outs that he did, including a strikeout of Tyler Flowers. He has been terrific for the Jays this season, but that certainly wasn't the case on Friday. He'll look to get back on track when he carries a 3.83 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 73/21 K/BB ratio into Friday's start against the Rays.
