  • Ramirez (back) thinks he'll play in AS game
Alexei Ramirez (back) thinks he'll be available to play in the All-Star game.

Advice: Ramirez exited Saturday's game with back stiffness and will surely sit out Sunday, but he doesn't think it's a big issue. "I don't think it's going to be a major thing,'' said Ramirez. The White Sox could still decide to play it safe and hold the shortstop out of the All-Star festivities.

  • Padres recall Jace Peterson from AAA level
Padres recalled INF Jace Peterson from Triple-A El Paso.

Advice: Peterson will give the Padres some needed infield depth. He has hit well this season at the Triple-A level, but that success has not translated to the major leagues.

  • Cubs SS prospect Russell with 2 more hits
Cubs shortstop prospect Addison Russell went 2-for-5 for the second consecutive night for Double-A Tennessee.

Advice: Russell was 0-for-9 over his first two games, but has gone 4-for-10 over his last two games, bringing his Cubs-only line to .211/.211/.211 over four games. Russell is a better shortstop, both now and long-term, than Javier Baez, but the Cubs future infield is beyond crowded, with Arismendy Alcantara, Baez, Kris Bryant, and Russell making the case for three spots, one of which is already in the possession of 22-year old Starlin Castro.

Stephen Drew is not in the Red Sox starting lineup for Saturday's contest against the Astros.

Advice: Brock Holt will draw the start in his place at shortstop while Xander Bogaerts covers third base. Drew continues to struggle offensively, slashing just .135/.198/.258 with two homers and five RBI through his first 27 games.

  • Jean Segura not in Brewers lineup on Saturday
Jean Segura is not in the Brewers starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

Advice: Segura has been dealing with leg cramps in recent days, so it appears the Brewers are just giving him an extra day to rest. Jeff Bianchi will draw the start at shortstop in his place and bat eighth against opposing hurler Adam Wainwright.

  • Tulo hits 21st home run in victory over Twins
Troy Tulowitzki hit his 21st home run of the season in Friday's win over the Twins.

Advice: It was a two-run shot off Kris Johnson in the third inning. Tulowitzki is now tied with Miami's Giancarlo Stanton for the National League lead in home runs. Meanwhile, he leads majors with a .349 batting average and a 1.060 OPS. The Rockies aren't going anywhere this year, but the 29-year-old shortstop could be primed for his first MVP season if his health cooperates in the second half.

  • Aybar has two hits Friday vs. Rangers
Erick Aybar went 2-for-4 with an RBI single against the Rangers on Friday.

Advice: Aybar, who was recently named as Alex Gordon's replacement for the American League All-Star team, has hit safely in seven straight games and 10 out of his last 11. The 30-year-old has had a very productive first half, batting .285/.321/.416 with six home runs, 49 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and 46 runs scored over 90 games.

  • Rollins smacks two homers in win over Nats
Jimmy Rollins homered twice and knocked in three runs in a 6-2 win over the Nationals on Friday night.

Advice: Rollins connected for a two-run shot off Jordan Zimmermann in the third inning and later added a solo blast against Craig Stammen in the seventh. It was his first multi-hit homer game since August 1, 2012, also against the Nationals. While the 35-year-old has seen his batting average drop off in a big way since the start of the season, he's now up to 11 home runs on the year. He hit just six of them in 160 games last year.

  • Kawasaki forced to leave with tight hamstring
Munenori Kawasaki was forced to leave Friday's game against the Rays in the seventh inning due to tightness in his right hamstring.

Advice: Kawasaki is considered day-to-day and should return to the Blue Jays lineup at some point over the weekend. He was 1-for-4 with an RBI before departing.

  • Giants designate Brandon Hicks for assignment
Giants designated INF Brandon Hicks for assignment.

Advice: Hicks had served as the Giants starting second baseman early in the season, but was hitting a meager .162/.280/.319 with eight homers and 22 RBI in his 204 at-bats on the season. He could attract interest via waivers from team's looking for middle infield depth.

  • Christian Colon optioned to Triple-A
Royals optioned INF Christian Colon to Triple-A Omaha.

  • Yunel Escobar activated from disabled list
Rays activated SS Yunel Escobar from the 15-day disabled list.

  • X-rays on Desmond's hand come back clean
X-rays on Ian Desmond's right hand came back clean.

Advice: Desmond had to leave Thursday's game after being hit on the hand by a pitch, but it appears he's dodged a bullet. He could sit out a game or two due to soreness, but the shortstop will avoid the disabled list.
    Thursday, 7:06 pm
  • Ian Desmond exits after taking pitch off hand
Ian Desmond exited Thursday's game against the Orioles after being hit on the right hand by a pitch.

Advice: Desmond initially stayed in the game and tried to play defense the next inning, but he felt too much pain while making warm-up throws. The shortstop figures to undergo an X-ray to make sure he didn't break anything.

  • Rollins' homer gives Phils lead, win over MIL
Jimmy Rollins broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run home run in the sixth inning as the Phillies defeated the Brewers on Wednesday.

Advice: Rollins' homer off of Kyle Lohse, which turned out to be the game-winning hit, was his first home run in over a month. The shortstop hasn't done a whole lot offensively after a quick start to the season, but still has average numbers relative to his position. He is slashing .240/.325/.375 with nine home runs, 34 RBI, and 17 stolen bases.
    Wednesday, 8:03 pm
  • Desmond blasts 16th homer in win over O's
Ian Desmond blasted a solo home run, his only hit in four at-bats, as the Nationals won by a 6-2 margin over the Orioles on Wednesday.

Advice: Desmond's fourth-inning homer padded the Nats' lead to 4-1 at the time. The shortstop has been swinging the bat better since a late-June slump. He has a .240/.291/.427 slash line with 16 home runs and 54 RBI on the season.
    Wednesday, 7:41 pm
  • Tulowitzki homers twice in defeat of Padres
Troy Tulowitzki homered twice in the Rockies' 6-3 defeat of the Padres on Wednesday afternoon.

Advice: Tulo slugged a solo shot in the Rockies' two-run first inning and then added another solo bomb in the Rockies' three-run eighth. He could be on his way to his first National League MVP trophy with a .350/.441/.616 batting line, 20 homers, and 49 RBI in 86 games.
    Wednesday, 3:32 pm
  • Yunel Escobar on track to return Friday
Yunel Escobar (shoulder) is on track to the activated from the disabled list on Friday.

Advice: That's the first day he's eligible. Escobar went 1-for-4 with a single and a run for High-A Charlotte on Tuesday in his second rehab game. He played all nine innings at shortstop and didn't have any issues, so the Rays getting him back on Friday shouldn't be a problem.
