      Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Tuesday that Bednar (oblique) has progressed to throwing from 120 feet and should soon resume mound work, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

      Advice: The right-hander was briefly shut down from throwing after he landed on the injured list June 23 with an oblique strain. Bednar will be eligible to be reinstated to the active roster soon, but he could spend more than the 15-day minimum on the shelf since he's yet to get back on the mound.     • Making next start Tuesday
      Birdsong is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday in Atlanta, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: The banged-up Giants have only two members of their Opening Day rotation (Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks) available at the moment, so San Francisco should have a spot available for Birdsong until at least three of Kyle Harrison (ankle), Blake Snell (groin), Alex Cobb (hip), Robbie Ray (elbow) and Keaton Winn (elbow) come back from the injured list. After being expedited to the big leagues last week following just two starts at Triple-A Sacramento, Birdsong demonstrated shaky command in his MLB debut against the Cubs on Wednesday, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. On a positive note, Birdsong induced nine swings and misses and finished with five punchouts. His long-term outlook remains promising, but Birdsong shapes up as a risky fantasy option heading into what will likely be a two-start week.       Kopech struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Sunday against the Rockies. The game was tied at the time, and the White Sox would go on to lose in 14 innings.

      Advice: Kopech made his third appearance in four days after recording back-to-back saves June 27 and June 28. The right-hander delivered Sunday, retiring the side in order while striking out two batters on just eight pitches.       Jhoan Duran fired a perfect ninth inning on Sunday against the Mariners to collect his 12th save of the season.

      Advice: Duran turned in a scoreless outing for the 10th time in 12 appearances since the start of June as he needed just 19 pitches (13 strikes) to slam the door in this one. The hard-throwing 26-year-old righty has converted 12 of his 13 save opportunities this season to accompany a solid 3.51 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 23/8 K/BB ratio across 25 2/3 innings (27 appearances).       Advice: Hoffman allowed a runner to reach on an error but was otherwise solid in picking up his sixth save. Jose Alvarado leads the Phillies with 12 saves this season, but Hoffman has gotten the occasional opportunity.       Jeff Hoffman struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning on Sunday against the Marlins.

      Advice: Hoffman worked around a throwing error from Trea Turner to secure this save. While possibly the best Phillie reliever, José Alvarado has grabbed most of the saves.       Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Sunday that Bednar is making progress in his recovery from a left oblique strain, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

      Advice: Though Cherington struck an optimistic tone about Bednar's health, the two-time All-Star doesn't appear to have a concrete timeline to return from the 15-day injured list. Bednar is first eligible for activation next weekend, but because he has yet to resume throwing since landing on the shelf, he doesn't appear to be on track for a return in the minimum amount of time.     • Blows save, grabs win Friday
      Doval (3-1) allowed a run on one hit and struck out one over over inning, blowing a save but earning the win Friday over the Dodgers.

      Advice: Doval allowed a triple to Andy Pages, who came home on a Jason Heyward sacrifice fly that tied the game at 3-3 in the ninth inning. The Giants then got a walk-off home run from Brett Wisely to make Doval the pitcher of record despite his poor outing. He's given up nine runs over nine innings in June, though a pair of four-run meltdowns account for much of that damage.
