    • Doval picks up 15th save in win over Braves
Camilo Doval pitched a perfect ninth inning while striking out two in Tuesday’s win over the Braves.

Advice: Doval now has 14 saves on the season and has allowed just one run since his four-run implosion against the Angels back in mid-June. The veteran closer continues to be a reliable closer out of the bullpen, and he has hopefully put a tough June behind him. Rotoworld Tuesday, 7:29 pm
    • Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) set for Wednesday bullpen
Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Advice: Kershaw was shut down from throwing back in late June after experiencing soreness in his surgically-repaired left shoulder, so it’s a positive sign that he’s been cleared to resume throwing again. The 36-year-old veteran southpaw is targeting a midseason return to Los Angeles’s starting rotation and appears on track to make it back at some point in August. Rotoworld Tuesday, 5:16 pm

    • Returns to throwing
Kershaw (shoulder) has started throwing again Tuesday after experiencing shoulder soreness last week, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Advice: After being shut down for one week due to feeling soreness in his surgically repaired shoulder, Kershaw said he was relieved an MRI didn't reveal any new damage. The southpaw added that he received some shots to help alleviate discomfort and that he is hopeful the pause in his rehab will not push his return timeline back too much. • Becomes free agent
Bowman opted out of his contract and was granted his release Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Advice: Bowman put pen to paper on a minor-league contract June 16 after electing free agency June 14, but he'll once again test the open market after struggling at Triple-A Tacoma. He surrendered one run in four of his last five relief appearances prior to opting out. Rotowire.com Monday, 5:07 pm

    • Notches fifth win
Beeks (5-4) blew the save and picked up the win Sunday against the White Sox, allowing an unearned run on two hits and zero walks while striking out one batter in two innings of work.

Advice: Beeks came on in the 13th inning and allowed the ghost runner to score on an RBI single by Luis Robert, resulting in a blown save. The 30-year-old rebounded in the 14th inning, however, retiring the side in order to earn his fifth win of the season. Although Beeks was used in a high-leverage role Sunday, Tyler Kinley pitched two scoreless innings in the 11th and 12th and remains the preferred late-inning option for the Rockies. Beeks will continue to be in the mix for saves, but he is just 6-for-11 in save opportunities this season. Rotowire.com Sunday, 4:59 pm
    • Drawing another start
Contreras will start Thursday's game against the Athletics in Oakland, Doug Padilla of The Orange County Register reports.

Advice: The Angels will get Jose Soriano (abdomen) back from the injured list Tuesday, but with Patrick Sandoval (elbow) getting ruled out for the season last week and with Zach Plesac getting sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, Contreras and Davis Daniel will both get at least one more turn through the rotation. Since he had been working exclusively out of the bullpen this season before being called upon to start last Wednesday in Anaheim versus the Athletics, Contreras was capped at three innings and 61 pitches in the outing. Though he likely won't be stretched out quite enough to handle a typical starter's workload, Contreras should at least be able to give the Angels five innings if he's more efficient with his pitch count in the rematch with Oakland. • In midst of rehab assignment
Castro (shoulder) made his second rehab appearance in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Saturday, striking out four and allowing one hit and no walks over two scoreless innings.

Advice: Castro was placed on the Diamondbacks' 15-day injured list April 23 with right shoulder inflammation but looks to be closing in on a return after turning in a pair of scoreless appearances in the ACL. According to MLB.com, manager Torey Lovullo previously said that the Diamondbacks are targeting this upcoming Wednesday for Castro's return from the IL, but that date could be pushed back if the organization first wants him to get in some work with a higher-level affiliate. • Records save Saturday
Neris earned a save against the Brewers on Saturday, allowing one hit and issuing one walk while striking out two batters over one scoreless inning.

Advice: Neris entered in the ninth inning with Chicago holding a two-run lead and got into a bit of hot water when two of the first three hitters he faced reach base. However, the veteran reliever bounced back to strike out the final two batters of the frame. Neris secured his 11th save of the season and recorded his third straight scoreless outing. That may have helped him steady his grip on the closer role to some extent after he blew two saves and gave up seven earned runs across 2.2 frames over three appearances between June 11 and June 17. • Hector Neris works around jam to pick up save
Hector Neris allowed two baserunners, but was able to fire a scoreless inning while picking up a save against the Brewers on Saturday.

Advice: The Hector Neris experience is often successful, but it’s always an experience. The right-hander allowed the winning run to reach the plate after giving up a hit and a walk, but he was able to strike out pinch-hitter Tyler Black and Brice Turang to keep the runners off the board and pick up his 11th save of 2024.
