    • Birdsong notches first career win vs. Braves
Hayden Birdsong allowed two earned runs over five innings while striking out five to pick up his first win on Tuesday over the Braves.

Advice: Birdsong pitched a scoreless first inning but gave up back-to-back solo shots to Austin Riley and Sean Murphy in the second. Those would be the only runs allowed by Birdsong, who has now allowed five earned runs over his first 9 2/3 innings pitched on the season. The 22-year-old righty hasn’t blown away the competition in his first two career starts, but he’s given his team a chance to win in both outings despite a 1.55 WHIP. Birdsong is scheduled to make his third career start on Sunday against the Guardians. Rotoworld 11 minutes ago
    • DJ Herz strikes out 10 Mets on Tuesday
DJ Herz allowed one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Mets

Advice: Herz also struck out 10 and didn’t walk a single batter on the day. In fact, his only real blemish was a solo home run given up to Francisco Lindor in the sixth inning. The left-hander induced 16 whiffs on 51 swings for a 31 percent whiff rate and 38 percent CSW. His four-seam and cutter did the most damage on the day; however, Herz also showcased a new changeup that was three mph faster with less drop and more horizontal run. It didn’t get many whiffs on the day but induced a lot of weak contact and could be a decent development for the 23-year-old. Rotoworld 30 minutes ago

    • Michal Kopech takes loss against Guardians
Michael Kopech allowed one run on one hit in 1/3 of an inning in a loss to the Guardians on Tuesday.

Advice: Kopech entered the ninth in a tie game and allowed a lead-off single to Andres Gimenez. Gimenez would later move over on a groundout and then a wild pitch allowed him to advance to third where he was driven in by a sac fly off the bat of Bo Naylor. Kopech had allowed just one run in his last six innings and wasn’t particularly bad here, but the wild pitch highlights some of the inconsistency that he brings at the end of games. • Rehab moved to Double-A
The Nationals transferred Ferrer's (shoulder) rehab assignment to Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: Ferrer appeared in one game in the Florida Complex League, allowing one run on two hits while striking out one batter in 1.1 innings. He'll now join Harrisburg in order to rehab against some tougher competition, though it's still unclear whether he'll report to the Nationals or Triple-A Rochester once he's activated off the 60-day IL. • Carrasco pitches to quality start in no decision
Carlos Carrasco allowed three runs on four hits in six innings in a no-decision against the White Sox.

Advice: The veteran also struck out seven and walked one while posting a 26 percent whiff rate and 31 percent CSW. After a solo home run by Andrew Vaughn in the first inning, Carrasco was cruising until the start of the sixth when he allowed a single and a home run to Luis Robert Jr. The veteran has a 5.21 ERA on the season, and this feels a little bit like an effort fueled by a poor opponent. He should not be streamed against the Giants this weekend. Rotoworld Today, 6:21 pm

    • Flexen hit hard in no decision
Chris Flexen allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits in six innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Tuesday.

Advice: Flexen struck out three and walked one on the day. He allowed eight hard-hit baseballs including two home runs, which accounted for four of the Guardians’ runs. He did earn 13 whiffs on 54 swings for a 24 percent whiff rate and a 26 percent CSW. With a 5.08 ERA on the year, Flexen is not to be trusted in fantasy leagues and will be a risky stream even against the Marlins this weekend. Rotoworld Today, 6:17 pm

    • David Bednar (oblique) resumes playing catch
David Bednar (oblique) has resumed playing catch.

Advice: Bednar is expected to progress to throwing off a bullpen mound in the coming days. He landed on the injured list back in late June with a left oblique strain and will most likely be on the shelf until after the Midsummer Classic in a few weeks. It’ll continue to be Aroldis Chapman handling the closing duties in his absence. Rotoworld Today, 5:23 pm

    • Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) set for Wednesday bullpen
Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Advice: Kershaw was shut down from throwing back in late June after experiencing soreness in his surgically-repaired left shoulder, so it’s a positive sign that he’s been cleared to resume throwing again. The 36-year-old veteran southpaw is targeting a midseason return to Los Angeles’s starting rotation and appears on track to make it back at some point in August. Rotoworld Today, 5:16 pm
    • Making next rehab start Thursday
Ray (elbow) will make his next rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Sacramento, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The left-hander covered 3.2 frames in his previous outing for Sacramento on Friday, and he'll continue building up his workload with the Triple-A affiliate. Ray made four rehab starts in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and is now scheduled for a third appearance at Triple-A as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery.
