  • Cole: velocity dip versus Mets intentional
    Gerrit Cole said after Tuesday’s start that he’s healthy and that he intentionally dialed back his velocity tonight after a long first inning.

    Advice: Cole topped out at 98.9 mph in the first tonight, but he was often throwing 92-93 mph in the second. He did pick it up some in the end, throwing his final fastball 95.3 mph, but it was an awfully discouraging performance. It’s good to know he doesn’t think he’s hurt, though.   • Yields one run in no-decision
    Chirinos allowed one run on three hits and three walks over five innings in a no-decision against Kansas City on Tuesday. He struck out five.

    Advice: Chirinos looked solid again in his second start this season, punching out five with eight whiffs in a 78-pitch performance. Considering Miami's injury woes in the rotation, the 30-year-old right-hander should remain a starter as he's posted a 2.70 ERA with 11:3 K:BB over 10 innings so far.   • Bobby Miller allows 3 ER in short outing vs. CWS
    Bobby Miller allowed three earned runs over two innings in Tuesday’s win over the White Sox.

    Advice: Miller surrendered a two-run homer to Andrew Benintendi in the bottom of the first inning, and later saw an Eloy Jiménez double bring Luis Robert Jr. around to score. Miller allowed four baserunners in the frame and needed 38 pitches to get out of the inning but was pulled after the second inning and 60 pitches. It was just Miller’s fifth start of the season and his second-shortest outing on the year, as he was erratic for much of the night, with only 33 of his pitches going for strikes. The young righty has allowed three earned runs or more in three of his starts this season and saw his ERA jump to 6.75 after Tuesday’s outing. If he’s given the chance, Miller will look to correct course in his next start, which is scheduled for Monday against the Diamondbacks. Rotoworld Today, 8:13 pm
     
  • Chirinos allows one earned run in win over Royals
    Yonny Chirinos allowed three hits and one earned run over five innings in Tuesday’s win over the Royals.

    Advice: Chirinos kept a potent Royals lineup at bay all evening, with his lone blemish coming in the first inning on a Vinny Pasquantino RBI single. Chirinos allowed six total baserunners on the evening, with three coming via the walk, but managed to pitch himself out of a few jams with runners in scoring position. A lack of run support left him on the hook for the loss before an RBI single by Nick Gordon in the seventh tied the game at 1-1. Through two starts, Chirinos is boasting a 2.70 ERA with 11 strikeouts to just three walks. He’ll look to pick up his first win of the season in his next start, which is set for Sunday against the Phillies. Rotoworld Today, 7:44 pm
     
  • Cole allows four home runs in loss
    Gerrit Cole allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings in a loss to the Mets on Tuesday.

    Advice: There’s a fair amount to be concerned about here. The Yankees ace walked four and struck out nobody on the day. His fastball sat 95.4 mph on the day which was down 1.3 mph from his first start. He hit 98 mph in the first inning but by the third inning, he threw only four fastballs and just one was over 94 mph. Home runs hit by Mark Vientos and Harrison Bader were on fastballs that were 91.5 and 93.2 mph. Given that Cole’s elbow injury to start the year involved some nerve issues, there’s a concern that there remains a lingering impact on Cole’s health or performance. It could also just be one bad start, but this is the second outing of his career that he did not strike out any batters and the other was on May 20, 2016, so it’s certainly a performance we want to take note of.   • Zack Littell strikes out six in win
    Zack Littell allowed two runs on four hits in five innings in a win over the Mariners on Tuesday.

    Advice: Littell also struck out six and walked one while registering 14 whiffs on 38 swings for a 37 percent whiff rate and 33 percent CSW. His only mistake was on a two-run home run by Ty France in the fifth inning. That’s two straight solid starts for Littell, who has not pitched more than five innings since June 9th. He’ll take a 4.17 ERA into a start against the Royals next week. He can be started in most fantasy leagues for that one. Rotoworld Today, 6:35 pm

  • Luis Castillo chased in 6th in loss to Rays
    Luis Castillo allowed four runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Rays on Tuesday.

    Advice: The Mariners ace struck out four and walked four on the day. He wasn’t sharp, with just a 44 percent zone rate on the day, but he had kept it together until the sixth inning. With the game tied at two, Castillo got one quick out but walked the next two hitters and was chased from the game. Michael Baumann then allowed a triple and a home run to bring in both inherited runners. Castillo had nine whiffs on 44 swings for a 20 percent whiff rate and 29 percent CSW on the day. We can probably chalk this up to a poor start, but it’s his second straight one so we’d like to see him right the ship next time out. The only problem is that the start comes against the Orioles.   • Twins prospect Matt Canterino shut down again
    Twins RHP prospect Matt Canterino has been shut down from throwing due to right shoulder soreness.

    Advice: Canterino hasn’t pitched in the minors since the 2022 campaign at this point after undergoing Tommy John surgery and a series of shoulder issues. It’s another tough break for the 26-year-old righty who was a second-round pick all the way back in 2019. Rotoworld Today, 5:59 pm
     
  • Serving as opener Tuesday
    Rodriguez will serve as the Giants' opening pitcher for Tuesday's game versus the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

    Advice: Rodriguez has recorded at least five outs in 10 of his 18 appearances, so he should be capable of going at least a couple innings Tuesday. The Giants are opting for a second straight bullpen game after Erik Miller opened Monday's 5-4 win. Rotowire.com Today, 12:05 pm
