• Sean Manaea goes 4 2/3 scoreless against Giants
Even though the Mets had a six-run lead, a frustrated Sean Manaea was lifted after 4 2/3 scoreless innings Wednesday against the Giants.

Advice: Manaea was inefficient in walking four and throwing 101 pitches today, but considering that he struck out the final man he faced, it seemed like he ought to have been given a chance to go for the win. And if managers simply don’t care about that kind of thing any longer, then why should any of us? Manaea has a 3.33 ERA in his five starts this season. The Mets are 3-2 when he pitches, but his record is 1-1. Rotoworld 4 minutes ago
  • Confirmed for first rehab start
The Rangers announced that Scherzer (back) will make his first minor-league rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Round Rock.

Advice: Texas' decision to place Scherzer on the 15-day injured list rather than the 60-day IL coming out of spring training was the first hint that the veteran righty was making a speedier-than-expected recovery from his Dec. 15 surgery to address a herniated disc in his back, and he appears to have faced no setbacks while advancing through his throwing progression during the first month of the regular season. Scherzer will now move on to the final phase of his ramp-up program by heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment, which will likely consist of at least two appearances with Round Rock or another affiliate. According to the Associated Press, manager Bruce Bochy said Scherzer is expected to throw about 50 pitches in Wednesday's outing after he tossed a 40-pitch simulated game this past Friday. • Rejoining rotation this weekend
Valdez (elbow) completed a 40-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and is scheduled to pitch Saturday or Sunday against the Rockies in Mexico City, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The left-hander landed on injured list with elbow inflammation April 9, and it appears he'll return after missing little more than the 15-day minimum. Valdez will likely face some workload limitations in his first few starts back given he's only built up to 40 pitches, but it will be a welcome return for a Houston rotation that's now also missing Cristian Javier (neck). • Stops throwing program
Graterol (shoulder) has stopped his throwing program due to his arm remaining sore and manager Dave Roberts stated Wednesday, "It's going to be a long program" to get him back, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Advice: Graterol threw a bullpen session last week and appeared to be trending well in his recovery, but recurring soreness will likely prohibit him from returning as early as hoped. The right-hander may now have a difficult time returning from the 60-day injured list when first eligible May 18. Rotowire.com 21 minutes ago
  • Moves closer to return
Kelly (undisclosed) threw a bullpen session Tuesday and is nearing a return, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Advice: The details on Kelly's injury are still unknown, but it appears his return may be sooner than expected. The southpaw pitcher is currently on the 40-man roster for the Rangers and could be a candidate to be called up once healthy. Rotowire.com 51 minutes ago
  • Throwing off mound this weekend
Hendricks (back) will throw a bullpen session this weekend in Boston, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.

Advice: The Cubs will map out a plan for Hendricks' rehab based on how he feels during and after the bullpen session. Hendricks was placed on the injured list Tuesday with a lower-back strain. Given his 12.00 ERA in five starts this season, the team might elect to give him ample time on a rehab assignment in hopes he can get back on track. Rotowire.com Today, 1:59 pm
  • Draws start Wednesday
Blach is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Padres at Coors Field.

Advice: Per Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com, the Rockies are likely to treat Wednesday's contest as a bullpen day, as Blach tossed an inning of relief Monday and may not be ready to handle a typical starter's workload just two days later. Prior to getting a call-up from Triple-A Albuquerque last weekend, Blach had made four starts for the Rockies' top affiliate, logging a 3.45 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB in 15.2 innings. Blach will presumably be in line for just one start before moving back to the bullpen after Wednesday's game. Rotowire.com Today, 1:33 pm

  • Kyle Gibson strikes out six in Cardinals’ win
Kyle Gibson limited the Diamondbacks to one run in six innings and struck out six in the Cardinals’ 5-1 victory Wednesday.

Advice: The Diamondbacks did Gibson a favor, giving Ketel Marte, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Gabriel Moreno the day off, and Gisbon went on to have a pretty easy day. His 14 whiffs and 36% CSW were both season highs. He’ll carry a 2-2 record and a 4.35 ERA into Detroit for his next start. Rotoworld Today, 1:02 pm
  • Jordan Montgomery goes seven against Cardiansl
Jordan Montgomery yielded three runs — two earned — in seven innings Wednesday in a loss to the Cardinals.

Advice: Montgomery cruised through five innings before giving up three hits and two runs in the sixth. The unearned run came after a Blaze Alexander error in the seventh. Montgomery struck out four and walked one in the efficient 87-pitch outing. He’ll take on the Dodgers next. Rotoworld Today, 1:02 pm
