• Set to resume throwing
Oviedo (arm) is expected to get clearance to resume throwing within the next week, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Oviedo will be out for the entire 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in early December of 2023. He'll build back up slowly and is unlikely to appear in any game action until spring training. Rotowire.com 9 minutes ago

  • Able to throw
Pepiot (leg) was able to play catch Wednesday, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Pepiot was placed on the injured list the same day, so he'll be out until at least May 21. However, he has stated that he plans to return after a minimum stint sidelined, and his ability to continue to throw suggests he'll be back quickly. Rotowire.com 14 minutes ago

  • Elects free agency
Barnes declined an outright assignment from the Nationals and elected free agency Thursday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: The veteran reliever cleared waivers after being designated for assignment, but he will look for a job elsewhere rather than report to the Nationals' Triple-A affiliate in Rochester. Barnes put up an unsightly 6.75 ERA and 10:4 K:BB across 13.1 frames for the Nats and might be hard-pressed to find an organization willing to give him a major-league deal. • Set for another rehab appearance
Fairbanks (arm) will make a second rehab appearance with Triple-A Durham on Thursday, MLB.com reports.

Advice: The Rays were uncommitted to Fairbanks' status after he made an initial rehab appearance Tuesday. Assuming Thursday's outing goes according to plan, he may be back with the team as soon as its weekend series against the Yankees. Rotowire.com 17 minutes ago
  • Matt Barnes elects free agency
Matt Barnes declined his outright assignment to Triple-A and is now a free agent.

Advice: Barnes will look to see if another club will give him a shot after he declined his option to Triple-A. The 33-year-old has allowed 10 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings of work this season with the Nationals. Rotoworld 18 minutes ago
  • Homers in third straight
Tucker went 1-for-5 with a solo home run Wednesday against the Yankees.

Advice: Tucker tallied a homer in his third straight game by taking Carlos Rodon yard in the opening frame. He's also mashed six of his 11 homers this season in his last ten contests, though he has only three additional hits in that span. Overall, it's been an excellent start to the campaign for Tucker, as he has also chipped in five stolen bases, 25 runs and 25 RBI across 36 contests. Rotowire.com 22 minutes ago

  • Two straight starts
Meyers went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI on Wednesday against the Yankees.

Advice: Meyers had emerged as one of the primary playing-time losers as a result of Joey Loperfido's promotion. However, Loperfido has sat in each of Houston's last two games, and Meyers has delivered on the opportunity to start those contests by going a combined 3-for-8. Meyers is still likely to lose out in the long term, but the Astros may continue to give him run as Lopefido finds his footing in the big leagues. Rotowire.com 29 minutes ago
  • Productive in loss
Blackmon went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk Wednesday against the Giants.

Advice: Blackmon delivered a pair of separate RBI knocks to snap a skid of 15 starts without collecting multiple hits. He's struggled to just a .616 OPS across 112 plate appearances to begin the season, though both his barrel and hard-hit rate remain in line with his more productive recent campaigns. If those skills stick, Blackmon should start to see better results, particularly at home. Rotowire.com 35 minutes ago
  • Raking at Double-A
Hassell was named the Eastern League Player of the Week on Monday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The 22-year-old outfielder has been on a heater longer than just one week, however. Hassell has nine multi-hit performances in the last 14 games for Double-A Harrisburg, slashing .434/.508/.585 over that stretch with two homers, nine steals in 10 attempts and a 7:12 BB:K. The improvement in his plate discipline is especially noteworthy -- in 106 games for Harrisburg last season he had a 31.9 percent strikeout rate, a number he's cut down to 19.3 percent through 24 contests in 2024. A promotion to Triple-A for Hassell should be coming shortly, but the Nationals might be waiting to bump James Wood up to the majors to open up a starting job in the outfield at Rochester.
