  • Gutierrez could return to Mariners
Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said Tuesday that the club will considering re-signing Franklin Gutierrez to a minor league contract.

Advice: Gutierrez didn't play at all this season after being diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. He's averaged just 58 games played per season from 2011-13 due to a variety of health issues but isn't ready to call it a career. "He's in Florida, working out. He has some interest in coming back next year. We're going to talk to him and we'll see what happens," Zduriencik said. "He left in a good frame of mind. We'll have to see where it's at, but he's spoken to our guys more than once about his desire in coming back next year. It would be as a non-roster player." Rotoworld.com

  • Geovany Soto exits game with thumb injury
Geovany Soto left Tuesday's Wild Card Game against the Royals with a left thumb injury.

Advice: Soto injured the thumb while making a tag at home plate in the bottom of the first inning. He remained in the game for a bit longer but eventually had to exit. The A's should update his status after the game, but it's possible he won't be able to play in the ALDS if the A's advance. Derek Norris replaced him behind the plate. Rotoworld.com

  • Martin nursing lingering groin injury
Russell Martin revealed Tuesday that the ailment he's dealing with is actually an aggravation of a groin injury from earlier this season.

Advice: The Pirates have been referring to it as a strained left hamstring and also said the month he missed earlier this season was due to the hamstring, but Martin says it's a strained left adductor magnus. He originally suffered the groin strain more than eight months ago while helping a friend run a youth baseball camp. He's not 100 percent, but the ailment isn't going to keep him out of Wednesday's Wild Card Game. "I'm not the only guy who'll be on the field who's banged up," Martin said. "Those two days off helped. I should feel pretty good." Rotoworld.com

  • 'Quite likely' Kershaw starts NLDS Game 4
Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com reports that it "appears quite likely" the Dodgers would start Clayton Kershaw on short rest in a potential NLDS Game 4.

Advice: Manager Don Mattingly side-stepped the question Tuesday, saying "we wouldn't even think about it until we see what would happen in Game 1 or what kind of situation we'll be in." However, Mattingly used Kershaw on short rest in last year's NLDS and the left-hander pitched well. Also, Kershaw threw a simulated game Sunday, four days after his final regular season start, a move Saxon thinks is "seemingly intended to get his body used to short rest." Using Kershaw in Game 4 would mean he and Zack Greinke would start four times if the NLDS went five games. The club is hoping Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) is ready for Game 3. If Ryu is ready and Kershaw goes on short rest, Dan Haren would be ticketed for long relief. Rotoworld.com

  • Travis Ishikawa to start in left field
Travis Ishikawa will start in left field for Wednesday's Wild Card game.

Advice: With Angel Pagan (back) done for the season and Michael Morse's (oblique) status looking iffy, at best, the Giants are scrambling in left and center field. Gregor Blanco will hold down center, and Ishikawa will be in left after starting three of the last four games of the regular season there. His experience as an outfielder is limited, but manager Bruce Bochy obviously feels comfortable enough with the 31-year-old. Rotoworld.com

  • Morse (oblique) 'doubtful' for WC roster
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that Michael Morse (oblique) is "doubtful" to be on the club's National League Wild Card roster.

Advice: There had been a possibility of him being on there as a potential pinch-hitter, but even that is looking unlikely. Morse has been battling a strained left oblique all month and it's looking like he might not be much of a factor this postseason even if the Giants advance. Rotoworld.com

  • O'Flaherty felt discomfort in elbow Monday
Eric O'Flaherty (elbow) tried throwing on Monday and didn't feel completely comfortable.

Advice: He is not on the A's active roster for Tuesday night's Wild Card Game in Kansas City and the left-hander might not be an option for the ALDS either. O'Flaherty was bothered by discomfort in his surgically-repaired elbow over the final few weeks of the regular season. Rotoworld.com

  • Josh Hamilton says he's ready for the ALDS
Josh Hamilton (shoulder, chest, rib cage) said Tuesday that he is ready to go for the ALDS.

Advice: Hamilton has taken batting practice, thrown long toss, and run the bases without issue each of the last two days in Anaheim. He's played in just one game for the Angels since September 4 due to shoulder, chest, and rib cage injuries, but look for him to be in the starting lineup on Thursday. Rotoworld.com

  • Shoemaker fully expecting to pitch in ALDS
Matt Shoemaker (oblique) said Tuesday that he has "no doubt at all" he'll be able to pitch in the ALDS.

Advice: Shoemaker threw another successful bullpen session on Tuesday afternoon, taking breaks to simulate a multi-inning outing. The right-hander hasn't pitched in a game since September 15 due to an oblique strain, but he seems likely to be the Angels' Game 3 starter against the winner of Tuesday's American League Wild Card Game. • Martin (hammy) expects to start in WC game
Russell Martin (hamstring) expects to start in Wednesday's Wild Card game against the Giants.

Advice: Martin left Friday's game after aggravating a left hamstring injury and sat out the rest of the weekend, but it's not going to stop him from playing in Wednesday's do-or-die affair. Still, the Pirates plan to carry three catchers for the game just in case. Rotoworld.com

  • Fuld starting in LF, batting 2nd in WC game
Sam Fuld will start in left field and bat second in Tuesday's Wild Card game against the Royals.

Advice: Athletics manager Bob Melvin has clearly prioritized defense in this one, though it's a little odd to see Fuld batting second. Coco Crisp will bat leadoff and play center field and will be followed by Fuld, Josh Donaldson 3B , Brandon Moss DH, Josh Reddick RF, Brett Lowrie SS, Stephen Vogt 1B, Geovany Soto C, and Eric Sogard 2B. Josh Hamilton (shoulder, chest, rib cage) is slated to face live pitching Tuesday.

Advice: Hamilton has been limited to just one game since September 4 due to right shoulder, chest, and rib cage injuries, but he's confident he'll start in left field for Game 1 of the ALDS on Thursday. The veteran outfielder has received a whopping 12 cortisone shots over the past couple of weeks to deal with the injuries. Rotoworld.com

Adam Dunn is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's Wild Card game against the Royals.

Advice: Dunn is in the playoffs for the first time in his long career, but it looks like he'll be limited to pinch-hitter duty. The full lineup hasn't been announced yet, but Geovany Soto will catch Jon Lester while Brandon Moss will serve as DH and Sam Fuld will play left. Rotoworld.com

  • Neil Ramirez to remain in bullpen for Cubs
Cubs president Theo Epstein said Tuesday that Neil Ramirez will remain in the bullpen.

Advice: Justin Grimm will also continue to pitch as a reliever. Many have speculated that Ramirez could be an effective starter in the majors, but the 25-year-old had a 1.44 ERA and 53/17 K/BB ratio over 43 2/3 relief innings this season and the Cubs would prefer to keep him as a late-inning arm. • Baez projected to be Cubs' 2B next season
Javier Baez is projected to be the Cubs' starting second baseman next season.

Advice: While Baez slugged nine home runs in 52 games during his first taste of the majors, he hit just .169 with a disturbing 95 strikeouts in 213 at-bats. Still, the Cubs love his long-term potential and believe that he'll be able to make adjustments to find success. While he's penciled in at second base for now, the dynamic could change if the Cubs end up trading Starlin Castro. Rotoworld.com

  • O'Flaherty not on roster for Wild Card game
Eric O'Flaherty is not on the A's roster for Tuesday's Wild Card game against the Royals.

Advice: Scott Kazmir, Sonny Gray, Jeff Samardzija were also left off, but Jason Hammel and Drew Pomeranz are on the roster just in case they are needed in long relief. Of course, with Jon Lester on the hill, the A's are hoping that won't be necessary. Speedster Billy Burns is also on the roster, giving Oakland a pinch-running option in the late innings. The A's will reset their roster if they make it through to the ALDS. Rotoworld.com

  • Shoemaker (oblique) throws off mound Sunday
Matt Shoemaker (oblique) said after completing a bullpen session Sunday that he remains "very confident" he'll be able to pitch in the ALDS.

Advice: Shoemaker threw 30-40 pitches at near full intensity. While he admitted to having a little bit of tightness, he thinks it's something he'll be able to pitch through. The right-hander has been out since September 16 with a left oblique strain, but it's looking like he could be ready to start by October 5 in ALDS Game 3. The Halos have Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson set up for the first two games. Rotoworld.com

Russell Martin (hamstring) remained out of the Pirates' lineup Sunday.

Advice: The Pirates took a long time to release their lineup, presumably so that Martin could test out his ailing left hamstring. Obviously, he must still be feeling pretty badly to sit out such a huge game. Chris Stewart is behind the plate for Sunday's regular season finale. Rotoworld.com

  • Duffy shelled, Royals can't take advantage
Danny Duffy was lit up for four earned runs in two innings Saturday in a loss to the White Sox.

Advice: Maybe that shoulder is still bothering him? Kansas City had a chance to move even with the Tigers at the top of the American League Central standings with a victory, but Duffy was a letdown out of the gate Saturday in Chicago and the Royals' offense couldn't mount a sufficient comeback. Duffy will finish the 2014 regular season with a 9-12 record, 2.53 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 113/53 K/BB ratio in 149 1/3 innings. Rotoworld.com

  • Baez's three-hit night pushes Cubs past MIL
Javier Baez went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI singles, a stolen base, and two runs scored as the Cubs defeated the Brewers on Friday.

Advice: Baez had been in a slump, notching just one hit in his previous 25 at-bats entering the game. He ended up accounting for four of the Cubs' six runs, proving crucial in their two-run victory. Baez's numbers aren't so great in his first 220 major league plate appearances, as he's batting .172/.232/.333 with nine home runs, 20 RBI, and five stolen bases. Rotoworld.com

Advice: He drew a walk before being lifted for a pinch-runner, but he was grimacing in pain after a pair of check swings during that plate appearance. Josh Hamilton (shoulder) will resume swinging a bat on Saturday.

Advice: Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Friday that he'll face live pitching at normal velocity before the playoffs begin, but his availability for the postseason remains in question. Before hitting the shelf, he slashed just .263/.331/.414 with 10 homers in his 89 contests. Rotoworld.com

Matt Shoemaker (oblique) played catch for the fifth consecutive day on Friday and remains optimistic of returning shortly.

Advice: This time he was able to long toss from a distance of 150 feet. While it doesn't appear that he will make it back before the end of the regular season, the Halos appear to have an opening for the third game of the postseason after Jered Weaver and C.J. Clayton Kershaw threw eight innings of one-run ball to lead the Dodgers past the Giants 9-1 on Wednesday.

Advice: With the win, the Dodgers clinched the NL West and Kershaw put an exclamation mark on a Cy Young season. Kershaw scattered eight hits and didn't walk a batter in tying his career high with 21 wins. Kershaw finishes the regular season 21-3 with a 1.77 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 239/31 K/BB rate across 198 1/3 innings. He'll soon be awarded his third Cy Young. Danny Duffy impressed Monday in his return from shoulder inflammation, throwing six scoreless innings in the Royals' 2-0 defeat of the Indians.

Advice: It ended up being a great day for the Royals, even though they were hung with a loss (in the suspended game). Brandon Finnegan, Wade Davis and Greg Holland finished up the shutout tonight as the Royals gained ground on Detroit and put the Mariners farther in their rear view.
