  • Duffy's four-hit game paces Giants in victory
Matt Duffy went 4-for-5 with an RBI double, a run scored and a stolen base as the Giants topped the Braves 8-3 on Tuesday.

Advice: Duffy had three singles to go with his RBI double, and the steal was his fifth of the year. The infielder hasn't had back-to-back hitless games since July 2-3, and Tuesday's outburst has his line up to .309/.346/.465. He'll have some stiff competition, but Duffy is square in the middle of the Rookie of the Year race in the National League. 53 minutes ago

  • Castro has three-hit night in loss to Giants
Daniel Castro went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in Tuesday's loss to the Giants.

Advice: Castro accounted for two of the Braves' three runs on the evening. The multi-hit game was the infielder's first since being recalled on July 25. Castro is hitting .316 through his first eight games in the majors. 58 minutes ago
  • Rollins logs two hits in his return to Philly
Jimmy Rollins went 2-for-5 with a double in his first game back in Philadelphia, a Dodger loss to the Phillies.

Advice: Rollins went 5-for-15 with two doubles, a home run, and five RBI when the Phillies visited for four games at Chavez Ravine last month. In his first game back in Philadelphia since he was traded to the Dodgers during the winter, Rollins struck out in his first at-bat leading off the game, then doubled in the third inning and singled in the fifth. The veteran hasn't been the offensive force he was last year, batting a meager .219/.273/.362 with 11 home runs, 33 RBI, and eight stolen bases in 15 attempts. Today, 8:09 pm
  • Escobar homers as Nats top the D'Backs
Yunel Escobar went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run as the Nationals eked out a win against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

Advice: Escobar led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo blast against Patrick Corbin. It's his second homer in his last three games and he's now on a five-game hitting streak. The veteran is having his best season since at least 2011, currently hitting .315/.362/.425 with seven home runs and 33 RBI. Today, 7:55 pm

  • Tejada has two hits, RBI in win over Marlins
Ruben Tejada went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in a win over the Marlins on Tuesday.

Advice: Tejada's RBI single in the sixth inning tied the score, and the Mets eventually won the game. The RBI was just his second since July 21 and 20th overall. The light-hitting shortstop is batting .255/.322/.341 overall. Today, 7:45 pm

  • Castro contributes two RBI doubles in a win
Starlin Castro went 2-for-5 with two RBI doubles as the Cubs shut out the Pirates 5-0 on Tuesday.

Advice: Castro doubled in a run and later scored in the third inning, helping the Cubs take a 3-0 lead. He made it 4-0 in the fifth with another RBI double. Offensive contributions have been few and far between for the shortstop, who's hitting a paltry .238/.272/.307 with five home runs and 46 RBI. Today, 7:37 pm
  • Tulowitzki hits second Jays homer, beats MIN
Troy Tulowitzki went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Twins.

Advice: Tulowitzki padded the Blue Jays' lead to 2-0 in the third inning with a solo homer to left field off of Phil Hughes. It's his second since joining the Jays and his 14th overall. In 29 plate appearances with his new club, Tulowitzki is hitting .333/.448/.667. Today, 6:50 pm
  • Giants outright Joaquin Arias to AAA Fresno
Giants sent INF Joaquin Arias outright to Triple-A Fresno.

Advice: Arias was designated for assignment by the Giants on July 27 and passed through waivers unclaimed. The 30-year-old is a .265/.293/.350 career hitter in the majors. Today, 2:51 pm

  • Correa's hot streak continues, homers in loss
Carlos Correa homered for the fourth time in as many games, finishing 1-for-5 in a loss to the Rangers on Monday.

Advice: Correa gave the Astros an early 2-0 lead with a first-inning home run off of Colby Lewis, but it was quickly forgotten when the opposition posted a six-spot in the bottom half. The shortstop has done nothing but hit since arriving in the major leagues, currently the proud owner of a .297/.344/.573 triple-slash line along with 13 home runs and 34 RBI in 209 plate appearances. Yesterday, 8:50 pm

  • Simmons diagnosed with bone bruise in thumb
An MRI has revealed that Andrelton Simmons has a bone bruise in his right thumb.

Advice: Simmons suffered the injury when he tried to make a diving catch during Saturday's game. The shortstop was feeling much better on Monday and it doesn't appear at this point that the disabled list is under consideration. Yesterday, 8:43 pm
  • Crawford homers twice, Giants lose in 12
Brandon Crawford hit two home runs, but it wasn't enough as the Giants fell to the Braves in 12 innings on Monday.

Advice: Crawford went back-to-back with Brandon Belt in the second inning, then added a two-run homer in the fourth inning to send the Giants' lead to 6-0. They accounted for both of his hits in five at-bats. The shortstop has put up terrific numbers this season, batting .266/.328/.492 with 18 home runs and 67 RBI. Yesterday, 8:18 pm
  • Ahmed homers in 4-hit night as D'Backs win
Nick Ahmed went 4-for-4 with a solo home run as the Diamondbacks beat the Nationals on Monday.

Advice: Ahmed broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning with a solo home run off of Doug Fister. It was one of four Arizona homers on the evening. The shortstop hasn't exactly been an offensive dynamo, as Monday's performance still leaves him with a lackluster .232/.289/.348 batting line along with seven home runs and 26 RBI. Yesterday, 6:47 pm
    L, 5-4 ^ @Was
  • Andrelton Simmons (thumb) feels much better
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said that Andrelton Simmons experienced a "really big improvement" with his sprained right thumb from Sunday to Monday.

Advice: Dr. Gary Laurie still needs to read the results of Simmons' MRI before more is known on his status, but it's sounding like the shortstop has a shot to avoid the disabled list. Simmons suffered the injury after trying to make a diving catch during Saturday's game. Yesterday, 6:34 pm
  • Jose Ramirez recalled from Triple-A
Indians recalled INF Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Columbus.

Advice: Ramirez lost his shortstop job when Francisco Lindor was promoted but should see some time at second base while Jason Kipnis (shoulder) is out. He's hit only .176/.243/.235 in the majors this season. Yesterday, 3:36 pm
  • Giants promote Kelby Tomlinson from AAA
Giants purchased the contract of INF Kelby Tomlinson from Triple-A Sacramento.

Advice: Tomlinson has hit .321/.376/.414 with 21 stolen bases in 97 games this season between Double-A and Triple-A. He'll provide much-needed depth at second base for the Giants, who just lost Joe Panik to lingering lower back inflammation. Tomlinson could have short-term fantasy value if he fights his way into everyday at-bats. Yesterday, 12:30 pm

  • Peraza hits first homer for Oklahoma City
Dodgers 2B prospect Jose Peraza provided three hits in Sunday's doubleheader for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Advice: One of the hits included his first home run as a member of the Dodgers organization. He also stole his 27th base and drove in a pair of runs. Peraza has gone 9-for-23 (.391) during his six-game hitting streak. The 21-year-old joined the Dodgers last week as part of a three-team swap with Atlanta and Miami. Yesterday, 12:16 pm

  • Difo comes through with career-high five hits
Nationals SS prospect Wilmer Difo contributed a career-high five hits in Sunday's win for Double-A Harrisburg.

Advice: He also stole a career-high four bases. Difo entered Sunday's game just two for his last 16. Few could have predicted Difo's meteoric rise through the Washington farm system. He began the year at High-A Potomac and has already seen time with the Nationals this season. The 23-year-old has hit .283 with a .332 on base percentage in 300 minor league at-bats this year. • Simmons will undergo MRI on injured thumb
Andrelton Simmons will undergo an MRI on his injured right thumb Monday in Atlanta.

Advice: It's being called a sprain for now, but there's some concern that the injury is more severe. "I'm hoping, but I'm always a glass half-full kind of guy," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Sunday when asked whether his shortstop is facing an extended absence. Simmons suffered the thumb injury Saturday while diving for a ball. Yesterday, 6:27 am
  • Drew triples, drives in four runs vs CWS
Stephen Drew went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and four RBI in Sunday's 12-3 win over the White Sox.

Advice: Drew fell a home run short of the cycle. He doubled in two runs in the fifth inning, then tripled in two more in the seventh. The three-bagger was his first of the season. Despite some nice power numbers, the embattled second baseman is hitting just .199/.268/.390 with 13 homers and 32 RBI. The Mendoza Line is so, so close. Sunday, 3:16 pm

  • Corey Seager goes off for four hits Saturday
Dodgers SS prospect Corey Seager recorded four hits in Saturday's win for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Advice: It was Seager's first four-hit game since May 28. He entered Saturday's game in a 4-for-33 slump and has only hit .241 in 79 at-bats since July 1. Seager remains a fascinating prospect and should arrive in the majors no later than 2016. Sunday, 2:52 pm

  • Russell hits seventh homer to help fuel Cubs
Addison Russell went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Brewers.

Advice: Russell took a Kyle Lohse offering for a ride in the second inning to notch his seventh home run of the season. In 299 at-bats this season, he's hitting .237/.303/.368 with 27 RBI and the seven long balls. At 21 years old, Russell is not a finished product yet. • Zobrist homers again, but Royals fall to TOR
Ben Zobrist supplied a two-run home run and walked in four plate appearances in Sunday's loss to the Blue Jays.

Advice: Zobrist went yard twice on Saturday, and added another in his fourth game as a Royal. His two-run blast in the eighth inning brought the Royals to within a run at 3-2. Zobrist is batting .272/.355/.480 with nine home runs and 39 RBI on the year. Sunday, 2:02 pm

  • Hechavarria launches walk-off homer vs Padres
Adeiny Hechavarria ended Sunday's 5-2 win over the Padres with a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Advice: Padres reliever Brandon Maurer was his own worst enemy on Sunday, walking two in the ninth inning before serving up the three-run homer with one out. The homer was Hechavarria's fifth of the season. He's hitting .279/.311/.375 with the five taters and 42 RBI. Most of that production came in April and he's cooled off after a hot start. Sunday, 1:41 pm
  • Amarista socks homer to tie MIA in ninth
Alexi Amarista went 2-for-4 with a triple and a game-tying two-run home run in the ninth inning of Sunday's loss to the Marlins.

Advice: Amarista's triple is notable for the fact that it was the only extra-base hit allowed by Marlins starter Jose Fernandez. After Fernandez left the game, the Padres looked dead in the water until the ninth inning, when Amarista struck like lightning, belting a two-run homer off reliever A.J. Ramos with one out to tie the proceedings at two-all. The big offensive showing is all the more surprising for the fact that Amarista was dealing with an 0-for-24 skid prior to his triple. He's batting just .201/.267/.293 with three home runs and 23 RBI this season. Sunday, 1:32 pm

Andrelton Simmons has been diagnosed with a sprained right thumb.

Advice: Simmons was injured on Saturday when he jammed the thumb on a play in left field. It looks like he'll avoid the disabled list for now, as the Braves are hopeful he'll only miss a few games. Daniel Castro is filling in at shortstop Sunday. Sunday, 8:08 am
  • Hanley Ramirez (shin) plates run in return
Hanley Ramirez (shin) singled and had a sac fly in his return to the lineup Sunday.

Advice: Ramirez sat out Friday's game with a shin injury, but he's fine. He's sporting a .263/.305/.451 batting line with 19 homers and 50 RBI this season. Sunday, 5:36 am

  • Marcus Semien homers, walks against Indians
Marcus Semien homered, walked and scored twice against the Indians on Saturday.

Advice: Semien has more errors (29) than RBI (23) or walks (25) this year, yet he still has an OPS (.670) right at the league average for shortstops. It's about as weird of a bad season as one could dream up. Saturday, 10:52 pm

Andrelton Simmons left Saturday's game against the Phillies after jamming his right thumb on a play in left field.

Advice: Daniel Castro replaced him in the eighth inning. His X-rays came back negative but the soreness could keep Simmons out for a few days. He was hitless in three at-bats before exiting. Saturday, 8:11 pm
  • Zobrist clubs two homers as Royals top Jays
Ben Zobrist clubbed a pair of solo home runs on Saturday, leading the Royals to a 7-6 victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Advice: Zobrist got the scoring started with a solo shot off Jays starter Mark Buehrle in the first inning. He then took Mark Lowe deep in the eighth inning, tying the game at 5-5 and igniting a rally that would lead the Royals to victory. He also doubled in the ballgame, finishing the afternoon 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Saturday, 12:41 pm

  • Castro drives in two runs vs. Brewers
Starlin Castro knocked in two runs against the Brewers on Friday.

Advice: Castro had an RBI single in the second inning before hitting into a fielder's choice in the fourth inning to drive in another run. The 25-year-old was in the middle of trade discussions this week, but the Cubs are surely hoping he'll breathe a bit easier now that the deadline has passed. He owns a disappointing .237/.271/.304 batting line on the year. Friday, 10:16 pm
  • Crawford hits 16th home run in loss
Brandon Crawford launched a solo homer in Friday's loss to the Rangers.

Advice: It was his 16th home run of the season and his fourth in his last nine games. The 28-year-old has been a surprising force at the shortstop position this season, batting .268/.331/.481 across 99 games. Friday, 9:51 pm
  • Escobar has RBI single in loss to Mets
Yunel Escobar drove in the Nationals' only run of the night Friday against the Mets.

Advice: His eighth-inning single off Matt Harvey tied the game, but the Mets eventually won in extras. Escobar went 1-for-5 on the night and has a .312/.360/.410 batting line on the year. Friday, 9:02 pm

  • Tulo has two hits, two runs scored in win
Troy Tulowitzki went 2-for-6 with two runs scored in Friday's extra-inning win over the Royals.

Advice: Tulowitzki singled with one out in the 11th inning and eventually came around to score the winning run on Josh Donaldson's walk-off single. With Devon Travis (shoulder) back on the disabled list, the slugging shortstop appears likely to stick in the leadoff spot for Toronto. Friday, 8:42 pm

  • Cubs aggressively trying to move SS Castro
ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Cubs are "aggressively trying to include Starlin Castro in any deal."

Advice: It's notable that Addison Russell started at shortstop on Wednesday. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said earlier this week that Castro would not be traded, but that's not a promise he can keep. The 25-year-old is batting just .237/.271/.305 in 406 plate appearances this season and his defense at shortstop has deteriorated. There's been talk of interest from the Padres. Thursday, 11:32 am
  • Tulowitzki homers, knocks in 3 in TOR debut
Troy Tulowitzki made his Blue Jays debut and went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored and three RBI in a win against the Phillies on Wednesday.

Advice: What a way to make a debut. He struck out in his first at-bat with his new club, but made up for it with a two-run home run in the third inning. He added an RBI double in the sixth. Tulowitzki now has 13 home runs on the year with 56 RBI along with a .305 average. • Blue Jays officially acquire Troy Tulowitzki
Blue Jays acquired SS Troy Tulowitzki and RHP LaTroy Hawkins from the Rockies for SS Jose Reyes and RHPs Jeff Hoffman, Miguel Castro, and Jesus Tinoco.

Advice: While many expected the Blue Jays to make a big splash for their pitcher, they stunned the baseball world late Monday night by upgrading what was already the best offense in the majors. Tulowitzki has managed to stay mostly healthy this season while batting .300/.348/.471 with 12 home runs and 53 RBI over 87 games. His injury history is a concern, especially on the turf at Rogers Centre, but the 30-year-old could age better in the American League because of the ability to DH. Tulowitzki will receive a $2 million assignment bonus for being traded and his contract now includes a full no-trade clause. He's owed $94 million from 2016-2020 with a $15 million club option or $4 million buyout in 2021. Tuesday, 8:06 am
  • Crawford homers as Giants top the Brewers
Brandon Crawford homered and walked in a 1-for-2 effort on Monday as the Giants defeated the Brewers.

Advice: Crawford delivered a two-run home run off of Kyle Lohse in the third inning, pushing the Giants' lead to 3-0. He's on a six-game hitting streak, currently standing with a .270/.336/.481 batting line along with 15 home runs and 61 RBI. Monday, 9:56 pm
  • Troy Tulowitzki traded to Jays for Jose Reyes
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins have been traded to the Blue Jays for Jose Reyes and minor leaguers.

Advice: Well, how about that for a late-night surprise? Offense certainly wasn't a need for Toronto given that they are leading baseball in runs by a wide margin, but they obviously saw an opportunity to make a strength even stronger. They're also improving their defense with the deal, as Reyes' defense has really gone south. Tulo is under contract through 2020 with a club option for 2021. Reyes might be flipped elsewhere, as dealing Tulo but then taking on Reyes' contract wouldn't mesh with the Rockies' rebuild. Colorado is reportedly set to receive Jeff Hoffman, Miguel Castro and one other minor leaguer in the deal. Monday, 9:32 pm
  • Joaquin Arias designated for assignment
Giants designated INF Joaquin Arias for assignment.

Advice: The move clears space on the roster for the return of Nori Aoki. Arias has been with the Giants since 2012 but was hitting just .207/.207/.276 this season. He'll clear waivers given his $1.45 million salary and should remain in the organization. Jul 27, 4:29 pm

  • Pads have discussed Starlin Castro with Cubs
FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Padres have discussed Starlin Castro with the Cubs.

Advice: Morosi adds that the Cubs have inquired on the Padres' starters and he opines that a Castro-for-James Shields swap might make some sense. Castro has been a colossal disappointment with the Cubs this season, hitting just .233/.268/.302 with five homers. He's under contract through 2019 and the Cubs would probably love to use him as a trade chip this week to get pitching help. Jul 27, 3:33 pm
  • Mets asked Braves about Andrelton Simmons
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Mets asked the Braves about the availability of shortstop Andrelton Simmons, but "the conversation went nowhere."

Advice: Olney says Atlanta "placed an unreachable price tag" on the 25-year-old. Simmons hasn't developed offensively as quickly as many were hoping, but he's a generational type of talent defensively and the kind of player the rebuilding Braves want to build around. Simmons is under contract with Atlanta through 2020 at some fairly reasonable rates. Jul 27, 7:44 am
  • KC staying locked in on Ben Zobrist market
Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals are planning to stay locked in on the Ben Zobrist trade talks "until the end."

Advice: Zobrist is a fit for just about every contending team because of his defensive versatility, so it's anyone's guess at this point where he's going to wind up after the July 31 trade deadline. Kansas City made the biggest splash yet with its weekend acquisition of Reds ace Johnny Cueto, but McCullough notes that the club still has shoppable prospects. If it wasn't already apparent, the Royals are going all-in. Jul 27, 6:27 am

  • Drew launches two-run homer in win over Twins
Stephen Drew went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Sunday's win over the Twins.

Advice: Drew cranked his two-run homer off of Twins reliever Ryan O'Rourke to put an exclamation point on a six-run sixth inning by the Yankees. The bomb was his 13th of the season. Some of his overall stats are, frankly, bizarre. He has a shot at hitting 20 homers for the first time since 2008, yet to this point he's amassed just 28 RBI. Almost half of his hits have either gone for doubles or home runs and he's still slashing a horrific .188/.263/.380. His numbers seem to defy the laws of nature. Jul 26, 2:27 pm

  • Yunel Escobar (wrist) in Nats' lineup on Sat.
Yunel Escobar (wrist) is in the Nationals' starting lineup Saturday night against the Pirates.

Advice: It looked like Escobar suffered a serious hand or wrist injury on a couple of check swings Wednesday, but he only wound up missing two games. Escobar is batting cleanup and starting third base in his return Saturday. Jul 25, 1:30 pm

  • Mets made push for Tulo, doubtful he's moved
According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Mets made a push for Troy Tulowitzki but came away with the impression that the Rockies will not move him.

Advice: The Mets have the kind of young pitchers the Rockies should be trying to stockpile, but there has been no indication from the Colorado front office that Tulo is on the block. And it seems the Mets have now moved on to other offensive targets like Ben Zobrist, Jay Bruce, and Justin Upton. Tulowitzki, 30, is under contract with the Rockies through at least 2020. • Braves recall Daniel Castro from Triple-A
Braves recalled INF Daniel Castro from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: The 22-year-old infielder should get a decent look this time around now that Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson have moved on to the Mets. He's hitting .300/.340/.334 in 89 games between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett this season. Jul 25, 12:18 pm
