  • Braves outright Ramiro Pena to Triple-A
Braves sent INF Ramiro Pena outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: Pena was designated for assignment earlier in the week to make room on the 40-man roster. He was arbitration eligible this winter, which may have played a role in the move as well. It's unclear if he'll accept the assignment or attempt to find a better opportunity elsewhere through free agency. Rotoworld.com

  • NYY offered PHI 'utility player' for Rollins
ESPN's Jayson Stark heard from two sources that the Yankees offered the Phillies "a utility player" for shortstop Jimmy Rollins.

Advice: That didn't get the job done. The Phillies seem to have a lofty asking price for Rollins, who turns 36 years old this week and is owed $11 million next season in the final year of his four-year, $44 million deal. They're simply not going to be able to get a top prospect or young, productive major league talent in exchange for the veteran shortstop. Rotoworld.com

  • Yanks talked to Phillies about Jimmy Rollins
According to Jayson Stark of ESPN, the Yankees talked to the Phillies about acquiring shortstop Jimmy Rollins.

Advice: However, the Phillies' asking price was too high, so the Yankees have moved on. Oh, Ruben. Rollins, who has a full no-trade clause, batted .243/.323/.394 with 17 home runs and 55 RBI over 138 games this past season. He turns 36 this week and is owed $11 million next season. Rotoworld.com

  • Sox announce 4-yr, $88M contract with Hanley
Red Sox signed SS Hanley Ramirez to a four-year, $88 million contract.

Advice: The deal includes a $22 million vesting option for a fifth year. With the Red Sox, Ramirez will most likely man left field, a spot at which he hasn't logged a single inning in his pro career. Defense is not why they signed him, though, and HanRam and fellow new addition Pablo Sandoval should give punch to the middle of the Red Sox order for years to come. Rotoworld.com

  • Rays willing to listen on SS Yunel Escobar
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports the Rays are willing to listen to trade offers for Yunel Escobar.

Advice: The Rays, Rosenthal notes, are willing to listen on just about anyone. In Escobar, a team would be acquiring a good defensive shortstop -- if 2014 was the statistical outlier -- with a team-friendly deal through 2017, potentially. If Escobar were to be dealt, the Rays have other internal shortstop options in Ben Zobrist and possibly Nick Franklin who could fill in in the short term. Rotoworld.com

  • Hanley likely ticketed for left field
Red Sox manager John Farrell mentioned left field for Hanley Ramirez when talking about the team's projected lineup Tuesday.

Advice: Ramirez has reportedly agreed to a four-year, $88 million contract with the Red Sox, but the deal hasn't been officially announced. Still, Farrell is already mulling over his lineup card. Things could change if the Red Sox end up trading shortstop Xander Bogaerts, but left field is the likely fit for Ramirez. Rotoworld.com

  • Report: Phillies 'love' Mookie Betts
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick writes that the Phillies "love" Mookie Betts of the Red Sox.

Advice: Aw, that's sweet. The Phillies are shopping Cole Hamels as part of their rebuilding effort and the Red Sox have plenty of moving parts to trade, so the two sides match up quite well. Betts would be a logical fit in a potential return package. Rotoworld.com

  • Report: Yankees not expected to be in on Tulo
Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reports that there are "strong indications" that the Yankees will not be in on Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.

Advice: To start with, rival officials who have spoken with the Rockies over the past two weeks are under the impression that Tulowitzki will not be traded. However, even putting that aside, Martino hears that the Yankees are not interested in taking on the remainder of his contract. While the 30-year-old is elite when healthy and a perfect replacement for Derek Jeter on paper, he's owed $114 million over the next six seasons. Things could change, but the Yankees appear likely to do something less splashy. Rotoworld.com

  • Figueroa released by Rays
    Rays released 2B Cole Figueroa.

Advice: Figueroa batted .233/.286/.326 in 23 games with the Rays in 2014. The 27-year-old is now a free agent and will look to catch on with another club, likely on a minor league deal. Rotoworld.com

  • Sources: Sox still going with Bogaerts at SS
Xander Bogaerts is still considered Boston's shortstop, according to two team sources who spoke with The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham.

Advice: In other words, as expected, Hanley Ramirez is ticketed for a position change. Most have speculated, in light of Pablo Sandoval's concurrent signing, that Ramirez will be Boston's left fielder next season. At this time, that scenario seems most likely. The only thing that will keep Ramirez at shortstop in 2015, it would appear, is a trade of Bogaerts. If the Red Sox are serious about trading for an ace, Bogaerts would be a logical target of their transaction partner. Rotoworld.com

  • Rangers bring back INF Lucas on minors deal
Rangers signed INF Ed Lucas to a minor league contract.

Advice: He'll be at spring training with the club, per an invitation attached to the contract. Very probably, the Rangers never wanted to part with Lucas, whom they claimed off waivers from the Marlins after the season. Instead, they didn't want to waste a 40-man roster spot on him. So Texas themselves waived Lucas, and, this time, he passed through the process untouched. The 32-year-old Lucas has handled six different positions over the past two seasons with the Marlins, slashing .255/.302/.323 over 163 games. He's a solid break-glass-in-case-of-emergency piece. • Jayson Nix elects to become a free agent
Jayson Nix has elected to become a free agent.

Advice: Nix was outrighted off the Royals' 40-man roster and then rejected an assignment to Triple-A Omaha, instead opting to test the open market. The 32-year-old infielder is a .212/.282/.345 career hitter in the majors. Rotoworld.com

  • Hanley's deal with Red Sox: four years, $88M
According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, free agent Hanley Ramirez has agreed to a four-year, $88 million contract with the Red Sox.

Advice: It was originally reported to be a five-year deal, but that fifth year will actually be a vesting option worth $22 million. The average annual value of this contract is quite lofty, but the Red Sox have to feel pretty good that it only required a four-year guaranteed commitment. Hanley has always raked when healthy, and he'll carry big-time fantasy upside with Boston. It's still unclear which position the 30-year-old will play. Rotoworld.com

  • BoSox, Hanley finalizing five-year, $90M deal
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Red Sox are finalizing an agreement with free agent Hanley Ramirez.

Advice: An official announcement will likely come by Monday afternoon. Rosenthal says it'll be a five-year pact worth close to $90 million -- a decent-looking deal for Boston given Hanley's offensive upside. The Red Sox are still thought to be chasing free agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval, so it's not clear yet what position Ramirez will play. If Hanley can stay healthy, he should have tremendous fantasy value in the power-friendly ballparks of the American League East. Rotoworld.com

  • Red Sox trying to land Ramirez and Sandoval
Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Red Sox are trying to land both Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval through free agency.

Advice: The Red Sox have already shown their interest publicly in Sandoval and are believed to have an offer on the table in the range of five years and $95 million. They have also been in contact with Ramirez's agent since the winter meetings and are believed to be working towards a deal with the star shortstop. Adding both of them would certainly be a massive upgrade to the Boston offense and could vault them to the top of the American League East. Rotoworld.com

  • Rangers unlikely to trade Andrus
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that the Rangers are not likely to trade SS Elvis Andrus.

Advice: Rosenthal noted that while the Rangers would be willing to trade "any shortstop" in the right deal, the team believes that Andrus is going to have a big year and would be somewhat reticent to move him. Beyond Andrus, the Rangers have Jurickson Profar and Louis Sardinia to dangle if something catches their eye. Rotoworld.com

Giants signed INF Carlos Triunfel to a minor league contract.

Advice: The slick-fielding 24-year-old owns a horrifying .160/.188/.235 slash line over 81 career at-bats in the big leagues. He'll look to compete for a reserve infielder role with the Giants. Rotoworld.com

  • Asking price for Alexei Ramirez is high
ESPN's Buster Olney has been told by rival evaluators that the asking price for Alexei Ramirez has been "steep."

Advice: The Dodgers are one team known to have interest in Ramirez, but the White Sox have reportedly fielded plenty of inquiries (which could be why they're asking for so much). Ramirez, who batted .273/.305/.408 with 15 homers, 74 RBI and 21 steals in 2014, will make $10 million in 2015 and has a $10 million club option for 2016. Rotoworld.com

  • Pirates claim Florimon off waivers
Pirates claimed INF Pedro Florimon off waivers from the Nationals.

  • Twins add Miguel Sano to 40-man roster
Twins purchased the contract of 3B Miguel Sano from Double-A New Britain.

Advice: Sano is now protected from December's Rule 5 Draft. The 21-year-old sat out the entire 2014 season due to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, but he should continue his ascent through the Twins' farm system in 2015. He remains a highly-thought-of prospect. Rotoworld.com

Advice: No word yet on whether he'll be invited to spring training. Bernier appeared in seven games at the major league level this season and hit .280/.348/.396 over 124 games in Triple-A. He's a depth add, nothing more. Rotoworld.com

  • Dodgers 'aggressively pursuing' Ramirez
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Dodgers are "aggressively pursuing" a trade for Alexei Ramirez.

Advice: The Dodgers are expected to let Hanley Ramirez walk as a free agent, creating a hole at shortstop. Instead of handing the job over to Erisbel Arruebarrena, it appears they're targeting Ramirez, who is owed $10 million with a $10 million club option for 2016. The White Sox shortstop batted .273/.305/.408 with 15 homers, 74 RBI and 21 steals this past season. Rotoworld.com

  • Hanley's reps have been contacted by Jays
FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Blue Jays "have established contact" with Hanley Ramirez's representatives "but are not actively pursuing him now."

Advice: It's not clear whether the Jays could eventually be real players for Hanley or if they were just doing their due diligence. If Toronto did go after Ramirez, they would likely have plans to put him at third base and move Brett Lawrie to second. Ramirez has expressed a willingness to play somewhere other than shortstop. • Five teams could be in on Stephen Drew
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, Athletics, and possibly the Nationals could be interested in Stephen Drew.

Advice: The Nationals would use Drew at second base. Cafardo notes that Drew "is expected to receive a low base contract with heavy incentives." It's not a surprise after his down season at the plate in 2014, but he remains good defensively and it wouldn't be a surprise if he rebounded at the dish in 2015. Rotoworld.com
