Ian Desmond (hand) is not in the Nationals' lineup Friday.

  • Yunel Escobar activated from disabled list
Rays activated SS Yunel Escobar from the 15-day disabled list.

  • Ramirez has 2 hits, leaves with sore shoulder
Hanley Ramirez singled twice over three at-bats in Thursday's win over the Padres before leaving in the eighth inning with a sore right shoulder.

Advice: He also swiped a base and scored a run before experiencing a flare-up of his sore right shoulder. believes he won't start again prior to the All-Star break. Miguel Rojas could draw those three starts. Han-Ram went just 1-for-11 in the opening series against Arizona in Australia back in March, but he's been rock solid since then, posting a .900 OPS in April, .806 OPS in May, .858 OPS in June and .830 OPS this month coming into play today. Now batting .275, Ramirez is on pace for 19 homers, 83 RBI, 78 runs and 21 steals. He's already missed 18 games with nagging injuries.

  • Cabrera's bases-clearing 3B helps Tribe win
Asdrubal Cabrera ripped a game-tying three-run triple in the seventh inning, helping the Indians come from behind and win against the Yankees on Thursday.

Advice: He would later score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. Cabrera also walked and singled in five plate appearances on the evening. The shortstop has a mediocre .251/.312/.398 slash line with eight home runs and 37 RBI on the season.

  • X-rays on Desmond's hand come back clean
X-rays on Ian Desmond's right hand came back clean.

Advice: Desmond had to leave Thursday's game after being hit on the hand by a pitch, but it appears he's dodged a bullet. He could sit out a game or two due to soreness, but the shortstop will avoid the disabled list.

  • Ian Desmond exits after taking pitch off hand
Ian Desmond exited Thursday's game against the Orioles after being hit on the right hand by a pitch.

Advice: Desmond initially stayed in the game and tried to play defense the next inning, but he felt too much pain while making warm-up throws. The shortstop figures to undergo an X-ray to make sure he didn't break anything.

  • Santana begins rehab assignment this weekend
Danny Santana (knee) will begin a rehab assignment at High-A Fort Myers this weekend.

Advice: It's good news for the Twins as they head into the All-Star break. Assuming all goes well during the rehab assignment, Santana seems likely to be ready for activation at the beginning of the second half. Santana was batting .328/.366/.448 batting line with two homers, 16 RBI and six steals over 37 games before suffering a left knee bone bruise.

  • Yanks call up Yangervis Solarte
Yankees recalled INF Yangervis Solarte from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Advice: Solarte was demoted a week ago, but he's back now that Carlos Beltran has been placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list. The 26-year-old is batting .260/.343/.393 over 71 games with the Yankees this season, but his production has dropped sharply since May.

  • Reds add Kristopher Negron from Triple-A
Reds purchased the contract of UTIL Kristopher Negron from Triple-A Louisville.

Advice: Negron will add some needed depth and versatility to the Reds' bench with Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, and Billy Hamilton all fighting injuries. Negron last appeared in the majors in 2012. The 28-year-old can play all around the diamond but isn't a great hitter.

  • Phillies SS prospect Crawford struggling
Phillies shortstop prospect J.P. Crawford went 1-for-5 with a strikeout for High-A Clearwater.

Advice: Crawford has hit .234/.306/.364 with one double and three home runs over 19 games since his promotion. His walk rate has dropped from 13.9 percent in Lakewood to 10.0 percent in Clearwater, and his strikeout rate has spiked from 13.9 to 23.8 percent. Crawford is one of the youngest players in the league, but it would be good to see progress in those departments before the end of the season. Perhaps more troubling, his fielding percentage has dropped as well, and his offensive struggles could be impacting his fielding, or vice versa.

Asdrubal Cabrera doubled and scored, going 3-for-7 overall, in an extra-inning loss against the Yankees on Wednesday.

  • Rollins' homer gives Phils lead, win over MIL
Jimmy Rollins broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run home run in the sixth inning as the Phillies defeated the Brewers on Wednesday.

Advice: Rollins' homer off of Kyle Lohse, which turned out to be the game-winning hit, was his first home run in over a month. The shortstop hasn't done a whole lot offensively after a quick start to the season, but still has average numbers relative to his position. He is slashing .240/.325/.375 with nine home runs, 34 RBI, and 17 stolen bases.

Ian Desmond blasted a solo home run, his only hit in four at-bats, as the Nationals won by a 6-2 margin over the Orioles on Wednesday.

Advice: Desmond's fourth-inning homer padded the Nats' lead to 4-1 at the time. The shortstop has been swinging the bat better since a late-June slump. He has a .240/.291/.427 slash line with 16 home runs and 54 RBI on the season.

  • Mookie Betts doubles twice in Boston's win
Mookie Betts doubled twice and scored twice as the Red Sox came from behind to beat the White Sox 5-4.

Advice: Betts was hit by a pitch and scored the tying run on Daniel Nava's double in the ninth. The Red Sox then won the game on Brock Holt's single to right. Betts also had an outfield assist in the game. Hopefully, the Red Sox are going to give him a chance to play regularly after yanking him in and out of the lineup in his first 10 days in the majors.

Advice: There had been some thought that Santana could be back when first eligible on Friday, but the team confirmed he'll need a rehab stint before returning. With so few days left before the break, he'll be able to take his time in coming back. Santana should head out on an assignment over the break before being activated sometime next week.

Troy Tulowitzki homered twice in the Rockies' 6-3 defeat of the Padres on Wednesday afternoon.

Advice: Tulo slugged a solo shot in the Rockies' two-run first inning and then added another solo bomb in the Rockies' three-run eighth. He could be on his way to his first National League MVP trophy with a .350/.441/.616 batting line, 20 homers, and 49 RBI in 86 games.

  • Jose Reyes playing through shoulder injury
Jose Reyes admitted Tuesday that he's been playing with a right shoulder injury for the past month.

Advice: The ailment has resulted in a bunch of throwing errors of late. "To be honest with you, I don't know," Reyes told Sportsnet on Tuesday when asked what triggered the problems. "It's been long enough. One day I feel good, the next day I feel sore, that's the way it is. Baseball, you're never going to be perfect, you're always going to have some soreness in your body. You need to find a way to control that." Reyes also said the shoulder bothers him on certain swings. He was batting just .227/.244/.273 over his previous 10 games before Tuesday's 4-for-5 outburst that included a home run.
    Wednesday, 7:25 am
  • Yunel Escobar on track to return Friday
Yunel Escobar (shoulder) is on track to the activated from the disabled list on Friday.

Advice: That's the first day he's eligible. Escobar went 1-for-4 with a single and a run for High-A Charlotte on Tuesday in his second rehab game. He played all nine innings at shortstop and didn't have any issues, so the Rays getting him back on Friday shouldn't be a problem.

  • Miguel Rojas hitless in return to lineup
Miguel Rojas went 0-for-4 at the plate in his return to the lineup Tuesday.

Advice: Rojas had to leave Sunday's game with a right forearm contusion, but he'll be fine. He could get another start at shortstop Wednesday as they Dodgers look to give Hanley Ramirez another mini-break in the DH spot.

Jose Reyes' monster game sunk the Angels on Tuesday, as he finished 4-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored in a 4-0 victory.

Advice: Reyes' fifth inning RBI single plated Munenori Kawasaki to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. His two-run seventh inning home run off Tyler Skaggs also plated Kawasaki and put the Blue Jays on top 3-0. The veteran shortstop is slashing .267/.320/.410 and now has seven homers.

  • Miguel Sano (elbow) won't play in AFL
Twins third base prospect Miguel Sano (elbow) will not play in the Arizona Fall League.

Advice: There had been some thought that he could be ready for game action at that time as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. However, the Twins have decided against it and have also ruled him out for the first half of winter ball. It's possible he could play in some game during the second half of winter ball.

  • Hanley Ramirez in lineup as DH on Tuesday
Hanley Ramirez will serve as the designated hitter for Tuesday's game against the Tigers.

  • Elvis Andrus knocks in three for Rangers
Elvis Andrus went 2-for-5 with a three-run double Monday versus the Astros.

Advice: Andrus has 21 doubles this year -- four more than he had in 156 games last season -- but he's driven in just 22 runs for the disappointing Rangers offense. Obviously, it'd be nice if he'd show some improvement as a hitter, but what's really hurt his fantasy value this year is that there just isn't a lot of talent around him.

Chris Owings (shoulder) has yet to resume hitting.

  • Baez clubs 13th home run
Cubs prospect SS Javier Baez went 1-for-4 with his 13th home run of the season Sunday for Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: The 21-year-old quietly has rebounded from a dismal first month of the season and is now batting .241/.310/.448 with 13 home runs, 17 doubles, 50 RBI and 15 steals through 79 games. However, Baez's penchant for whiffing has continued to hold him back, as the right-handed hitter has posted a 105-28 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year. That said, Baez has shown steady improvement since the beginning of June, batting .266/.347/.492 with six home runs, eight doubles, 10 stolen bases and a 42-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The 20-year-old has been especially productive since the beginning of May, batting .374/.435/.683 with 15 homers, 25 doubles and 52 RBI in 56 games. • Tulowitzki scores twice in loss to Dodgers
Troy Tulowitzki went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in a loss to the Dodgers on Sunday.

It helps that he is near the top in most every other offensive category as well. In all, the shortstop is batting .350/.442/.605 and, barring injury, appears on track for a career year in 2014.

Troy Tulowitzki finished as the top overall vote getter in the National League and will start at shortstop in the 2014 All-Star Game.

Advice: He'll be joined in the National League starting lineup by Paul Goldschmidt, Chase Utley, Aramis Ramirez, Andrew McCutchen, Carlos Gomez, Yasiel Puig and Yadier Molina. Tulowitzki is certainly deserving of the nod, and tremendous fan support, as he leads the National League in OBP, slugging percentage, OPS and runs scored.

Andrelton Simmons registered his fifth straight two-hit game on Sunday, finishing 2-for-4 in a loss to the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Simmons wasn't able to score in his fifth consecutive game, as Wade Miley held the Braves to one run in the game. Still, with his multi-hit game streak he's raised his overall line to .265/.303/.368. He owns a seven-game hitting streak heading into Monday's game.

Troy Tulowitzki is back in the Rockies' lineup Sunday.
