    • Kevin Youkilis (back) will play in an extended spring training game Saturday.
Advice: Mark Teixeira is also slated to play as he works his way back from a wrist injury. Youkilis has been sidelined for nearly a month with a lumbar spine strain, but he could rejoin the Yankees late next week if he can avoid setbacks.

    • Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday that Kevin Youkilis (back) is "maybe a week" away from being activated.
Advice: Youkilis, out since April 27 with a lumbar spine strain, took six at-bats Wednesday in a simulated game. It's not clear if he'll go out on a brief rehab assignment, but he's getting close.

    • Kevin Youkilis (back) took six at-bats in a simulated game Wednesday.
Advice: It was reported previously that Youkilis played in an extended spring game Tuesday, but that was actually also a simulated game. It's not clear when he'll be ready to play in a real game, but he's not far off. "I can't tell you," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I think you have to give him a few days in a row before you evaluate to make sure that his back is healed and it doesn't come back. The last two days have been pretty good, so he's getting closer."

    • Kevin Youkilis (back) took three at-bats in an extended spring training game on Tuesday.
Advice: It was his first bit of game action since landing on the disabled list with a lumbar spine sprain. Youkilis' recovery has gone slower than expected, but he's finally made some strides. The Yankees haven't revealed a timetable for his return, but early June seems about right.

    • Martin Maldonado has regressed at the plate in 2013, slashing .184/.253/.303 over 83 plate appearances.
Advice: In his first real exposure to Major League pitching, Maldonado batted .266/.321/.408 in 256 plate appearances last season. Perhaps he's toting his struggles onto the field with his catcher's gear. Maldonado has been a run worse than average defensively this year, according to Baseball Reference.

    • Mike Olt has experienced improvement with his vision problem.
Advice: Olt was placed on the disabled list with Triple-A Round Rock earlier this month due to a nagging eye issue, but symptoms have improved following eye drops and medication. He's scheduled to head to Surprise, Arizona to begin workouts and will eventually make his way back to Triple-A. There's no timetable for his return, though. Olt was hitting just .139 (10-for-72) with one home run and 32 strikeouts in 20 games prior to being placed on the disabled list.

    • Wilson Betemit (knee) will begin light baseball activities next week.
Advice: Betemit, who suffered a right PCL tear during spring training, received clearance after visiting the team doctor in Baltimore. The 31-year-old still has a way to go before returning to game action, but he's finally making some progress.

    • Logan Morrison (knee) will shift his rehab assignment to Double-A Jacksonville on Monday.
Advice: Morrison has spent the past week with the High-A Jupiter Hammerheads, collecting three hits and one RBI in 13 at-bats. He's working his way back from September surgery to repair a torn patella tendon in his right knee and is currently aiming to join the Marlins in early June. NL-only leaguers might want to stash him now.

    • Logan Morrison (knee) went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles Monday in his first rehab game with High-A Jupiter.
Advice: Morrison, who is coming back from knee surgery, served as the designated hitter. The 25-year-old is permitted to spend 20 days on his rehab assignment and will likely need most of it to shake the rust and get comfortable. However, assuming all goes well, he should join the Marlins' lineup in early June.

    • Logan Morrison (knee) is slated to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter on Monday.
Advice: Morrison has been playing in extended spring training games lately and hasn't had any setbacks with his surgically-repaired knee. With his 20-day rehab clock started on Monday, he'll be activated no later than early June as long as he doesn't have a setback.

    • A source told Andy Martino of the New York Daily News that the Mets could demote Ike Davis after this weekend's three-game series against the Braves.
Advice: The Mets have been answering questions about a Davis demotion for weeks and may have finally reached the breaking point. The 26-year-old first baseman went 0-for-2 on Wednesday and is batting just .147 with a .482 OPS and 49 strikeouts through his first 42 games this season. He has one hit in his last 38 plate appearances.

    • Ike Davis went 0-for-2 with two walks on Wednesday and had a couple of key miscues in the field in the Mets' loss to the Reds on Wednesday.
Advice: Neither play went as an error, but they both could be considered mental errors. In the seventh, Davis stayed back on a grounder rather than charge it, allowing the runner to score from third and giving the Reds a 4-2 lead. In the ninth, with the score tied 4-4, Davis elected to let a grounder go down the line, figuring it would curl foul. It didn't, giving Brandon Phillips an RBI double. In Davis' defense, the ball really did seem likely to go foul and the Reds almost certainly would have scored the go-ahead run had he handled it. In truth, Davis' decision looked much worse than it was, but since it turned out so badly, it's more fuel for those who want him demoted.

    • Ike Davis was removed in a double-switch after going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Monday against the Reds.
Advice: Worse, he made a boneheaded play in the first, getting called for interference and giving two baserunners extra bases. The Mets have been extremely patient with Davis, but one wonders just how much longer that can last.

    • Joe Mahoney (hamstring) is expected to begin playing in rehab games Sunday at Triple-A New Orleans.
Advice: Mahoney was placed on the disabled list April 28 with a right hamstring strain. He'll beat Logan Morrison (knee) back to the Marlins' active roster but will probably be sent back to Triple-A when LoMo is deemed fully healthy. Mahoney, 26, carries no fantasy value.

    • Joe Mahoney (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter this week.
Advice: Mahoney has been out since late April with a right hamstring strain. With Logan Morrison (knee) and Casey Kotchman (hamstring) also due back soon, Mahoney might be sent to Triple-A once healthy.

    • Kendrys Morales went 3-for-4 with a double in the Mariners' loss to the Angels on Wednesday.
Advice: The first baseman was the only one effective against Angels' starter C.J. Wilson on Wednesday, and his line is up to .281/.362/.449 on the year. After getting his legs back under him last year in Anaheim, Morales has been relied upon in the middle of the Mariners order. He has five home runs and 21 RBI through 45 games.

    • Scott Van Slyke doubled twice and knocked in two runs while starting in place of the benched Andre Ethier on Wednesday.
Advice: It's rather bizarre that the Dodgers have talked about promoting Yasiel Puig or Joc Pederson when Van Slyke has three homers and now two doubles in five starts for the club. He's not a great long-term bet, but he's been on fire at the plate all year long.

    • Scott Van Slyke is day-to-day after leaving Sunday's game with a leg injury.
Advice: Van Slyke fouled a pitch off his left leg and had to be removed from the game. The injury isn't considered serious and the Dodgers expect him to available for the start of Monday's three-game series with the Brewers.

    • Brandon Belt is out of Wednesday's lineup due to back tightness.
Advice: It isn't a major concern, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy didn't want to take any chances. Consider him day-to-day for now. Brett Pill is filling in at first base Wednesday.

    • Brandon Belt went 4-for-5 with his sixth home run of the season and four runs scored in Monday's 8-0 blowout of the Nationals.
Advice: Belt has reached base safely in 10 of his last 11 starts. Belt suffered through a forgettable April, batting .235/.287/.353, but his playing time and production have both spiked in May. Belt cut down his strikeouts and increased his rate of walks and his numbers reflect an improved approach at the plate. In May, he's slashing .250/.357/.521 with three homers over 48 at-bats.

    • Paul Konerko went 2-for-4 with a home run but the White Sox fell to the Red Sox on Wednesday.
Advice: The home run -- a solo shot off Andrew Bailey in the bottom of the ninth inning -- was Konerko's first since April 28. He is batting just .224/.289/.353 in 41 games this season and may finally be succumbing to old age.

    • Ty Wigginton went 0-for-2 with a walk in Monday's loss to the Padres.
Advice: He was also caught stealing. Wigginton doesn't draw many starts, and he doesn't do much with them when he does, slashing .194/.286/.226 with no homers or steals and one RBI through 31 at-bats. St. Louis doesn't often make mistakes, but the two-year, $5 million deal they gifted Wigginton in mid-December certainly qualifies.

    • Eric Hinske is batting .188 with a .548 OPS over 34 plate-appearances.
Advice: The Diamondbacks handed Hinske a one-year, $1.35 million contract in December after he batted just .197/.272/.311 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 91 games last season for the Braves. The former Rookie of the Year, now 35, is reaching the end of a respectable 12-year career.

    • Athletics sent 1B Daric Barton outright to Triple-A Sacramento.
Advice: Barton cleared waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. This is actually the second time he has gone unclaimed since the end of spring training, which speaks to how far his stock has fallen in recent years. The 27-year-old batted .143 (3-for-21) in eight games with the A's and will function as minor league depth.

    • Giants recalled 1B Brett Pill from Triple-A Fresno.
Advice: Pill was just sent down to the minors over the weekend, but he's eligible to return since Ryan Vogelsong and Santiago Casilla are headed to the disabled list. The 28-year-old went 2-for-6 in his first stint with the big club and will function as a backup first baseman and right-handed bat off the bench.
