    • Tommy Hunter hurled 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Jair Jurrjens to record his first hold of 2013 in Baltimore's 10-6 loss Saturday.
Advice: Hunter finished with a 5.45 ERA in 2012 and a 4.68 ERA in 2011, mostly as a starter. He's a better bullpen fit, where he's posted a 1.54 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 18/4 K/BB rate to go with a 3-1 record and a save over 23 1/3 innings. If Hunter keeps it up, Baltimore is likely to increase his usage to higher-leverage situations.

    • Grant Balfour converted his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Saturday's win over the Royals.
Advice: Balfour walked a batter but was otherwise unburdened. He entered this weekend with six saves but has picked up a pair in consecutive 2-1 wins against the Royals. The typically reliable Balfour is eight-for-eight in save conversions and holds a 1.56 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.

    • Oliver Perez took the loss in Saturday's game against the Indians after he allowed a run on two hits and a walk without recording an out.
Advice: Perez had been lights out prior to last night and this is the first update we've done on him in 2013. Such is life as a middle reliever. Those of us that snickered when Seattle signed Ollie in 2012 -- each and every one of us, in other words -- have been silenced. The formerly maligned left-hander from Mexico put up a 2.12 ERA in 2012 and currently sits at 1.62 in 2013. After years spent as an overpaid source of angst for Mets fans, Perez has proved a great bargain in the Northwest.

    • Tyler Chatwood enjoyed a successful return to the majors Saturday night, holding the Giants to one run over 5 1/3 innings.
Advice: Chatwood was making a spot start that allowed Colorado to give Juan Nicasio an extra day of rest. In his first start since April 29, Chatwood struck out four, walked four and gave up seven hits. Chatwood has a 2.55 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 12 strikeouts over three starts in the majors. He may just have forced his way into another turn in Colorado's rotation.

    • Rockies recalled RHP Tyler Chatwood from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Advice: Chatwood will make a spot start on Saturday night against the Giants. He has posted decent numbers this year at the Triple-A level but is not a great fantasy bet.

    • Tyler Chatwood will be recalled from Triple-A Colorado to start against the Giants on Saturday.
Advice: Originally, Chatwood was expected to be recalled to start on Sunday in place of the injured Jeff Francis. Instead, the Rockies have opted to give Juan Nicasio an extra day of rest and use Chatwood on Saturday. Chatwood has fared decently in his first two starts with the Rockies this season, and has posted a 3.14 ERA and 29/5 K/BB ratio over 28 2/3 innings at Triple-A. He could be worth a look in deeper mixed leagues.

    • Tyler Chatwood is expected to be recalled to start Sunday against the Giants in place of the injured Jeff Francis (groin).
Advice: Chatwood tossed six shutout innings in his second start with the Rockies late last month, so it's not a surprise that he's getting the call. He's also had a great year at Triple-A Colorado Springs, posting a 3.14 ERA and 29/5 K/BB ratio over 28 2/3 innings. The righty could stick around for at least a couple starts.

    • Ryan Pressly allowed a run over two mop-up innings in Saturday's 12-5 loss against the Red Sox.
Advice: The Twins plucked Pressly from the Red Sox with the fourth pick in last winter's Rule 5 Draft. He posted a 5.38 ERA in 103 2/3 innings last season between High- and Double-A, but has been a pleasant low-leverage surprise for the Twins thus far, logging a 1.83 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 19 2/3 innings. His peripherals aren't good -- including a 13/10 K/BB rate -- and his ERA won't end anywhere close to where it is now, but owners in extremely deep AL-only leagues may want to take a look if they need an injury replacement in the 'pen.

    • Huston Street earned his 10th save of the year Saturday as the Padres beat the Nationals 2-1.
Advice: He struck out a batter but walked two in the scoreless frame. Street was one day removed from being the losing pitcher after giving up a game-winning home run to Chad Tracy. Street is 0-3, going 10-for-11 in save conversions and posting a 4.42 ERA and 1.31 WHIP.

    • Huston Street earned his ninth save of the year Tuesday as the Padres beat the Orioles 3-2.
Advice: The Padres were trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the ninth inning but managed a rare two-run rally against Orioles closer Jim Johnson. Street then shut the O's down in the bottom of the ninth. He owns a weak 4.60 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 15 2/3 innings this season but still carries very good job security.

    • Eric Stults held the Nationals to one run over eight innings to pick up a win Saturday and move to 4-3 on the season.
Advice: Stults has been great over his last four starts, lowering his ERA from 5.67 to 4.05. On Saturday, he struck out five, walked two and scattered four hits. Stults gets the Diamondbacks on Friday night.

    • Craig Breslow picked up his first win of the season by tossing 1 2/3 scoreless relief innings against the Twins Saturday.
Advice: Breslow missed the first five weeks of the season with shoulder inflammation and has posted a 1.35 ERA over seven appearances since his activation. The 32-year-old Yale graduate has never finished a season with an ERA higher than 3.75 and boasts a 2.97 career number. Nerds don't often fool scouts, but Breslow has made it look easy.

    • Wilton Lopez tossed 1 1/3 perfect relief innings in Saturday's 10-2 drubbing of the Giants.
Advice: Lopez held a 12.46 ERA on April 12 and has been working since to minimize the toll his early-season woes wrought on his earned run average. He finished his first month in Colorado with a 6.17 ERA, but has been the reliever the Rockies believed they were acquiring over the winter since, posting a 2.08 ERA over 8 2/3 innings. Interestingly, Lopez had a superb 8/0 K/BB rate during his awful April and has notched a sub-mediocre 3/3 K/BB rate in May.

    • Sean Doolittle retired the Royals in order in the eighth inning Saturday, picking up his seventh hold.
Advice: Those of you in holds league already know Doolittle. Those of you in deeper formats should get acquainted with him as well, if you haven't already. Doolittle is 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA, 0.58 WHIP and 19/3 K/BB rate over 20 appearances. Doolittle surrendered a pair of solo homers in late-April. Outside of that, nobody has touched him.

    • Kenley Jansen took the loss after allowing two runs in the eighth inning Saturday against the Braves.
Advice: Chris Capuano was spinning a gem, but he got pulled after allowing a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth and Jansen promptly surrendered a go-ahead two-run shot to Evan Gattis. Jansen then yielded a solo shot to Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons. Brandon League is the primary closer in Los Angeles until further notice.

    • Dodgers manager Don Mattingly would not name Kenley Jansen his closer when asked after Tuesday's game.
Advice: Mattingly said on Monday that Brandon League was still his closer, but it was Jansen, not League, that closed out the 2-0 win over the Nationals Tuesday by striking out the last batter. League never even warmed up. "In that game, I had to go with the guy who's throwing the ball best; as much as anything he's been throwing the ball better than anybody," Mattingly said of Jansen. It's possible League will get the next save opportunity, but it's clear Jansen is the guy Mattingly trusts more. He should officially have the job before long.

    • Jim Johnson blew his second consecutive save in epic fashion Saturday as the Orioles fell to the Rays.
Advice: Johnson entered with the O's leading 6-4 and promptly surrendered five earned runs on three hits and two walks. He was among the best closers in baseball last season and started off strong this year, but his past two outings have been very troubling. The Orioles may want to give him a few days of mental rest.

    • Jim Johnson blew his first save of the season Tuesday night in the Orioles' late loss to the Padres.
Advice: It snapped a franchise-record 35-straight save streak. Johnson allowed four hits and two earned runs, coughing up Baltimore's 2-1 ninth-inning lead. The right-hander still has a stellar 1.80 ERA and 1.05 WHIP on the season and should be able to bounce back next time out.

    • Despite taking a comebacker off his pitching hand, Drew Storen pitched a scoreless 10th inning Friday against the Padres for his first save.
Advice: Aided by a Ryan Zimmerman throwing error, Rafael Soriano took a blown save in the ninth. Storen got his chance in the 10th after a Chad Tracy homer and got the job done, though not before allowing a couple of singles. The first of those was a hard shot up the middle that deflected off his pitching hand. Storen, though, remained in after a couple of warmups. His ERA sits at 4.41 currently, and he's no threat to Soriano's job as is.

    • Kris Medlen allowed just one (unearned) run in seven innings as the Braves beat the Dodgers 3-1 on Saturday.
Advice: Medlen was superb, yielding just two hits and three walks while striking out five batters. It was a nice bounceback effort for the talented right-hander, who struggled on Sunday against the Giants. He will carry an improving 3.02 ERA and 1.32 WHIP into his next start against the light-hitting Mets.

Advice: It's believed Beliveau will be up solely for Sunday, as it's already been confirmed that Jake Odorizzi will be promoted to start in place of David Price on Monday. Beliveau, a lefty, has an underwhelming 4.35 ERA in 10 appearances this season with Durham.

    • Hector Santiago lasted only 3 1/3 innings Saturday as the White Sox fell to the Angels.
Advice: Santiago cruised through the first three innings but simply lost it in the fourth after yielding a solo home run to Mark Trumbo to lead off the frame. His ERA jumped from 2.23 to 2.78 and his WHIP moved from 1.08 to 1.21. The regression should have been expected. Santiago will try to bounce back next week in an easy outing against the Marlins.

    • Carlos Zambrano threw two scoreless innings and had five strikeouts Saturday in extended spring training.
Advice: The Phillies' current plan calls for Zambrano to pitch in another extended spring game next week before possibly sending him to a minor league affiliate. • Phillies signed RHP Carlos Zambrano to a minor league contract.
Advice: Zambrano recently agreed to a deal with the independent Long Island Ducks, but never reported to the club because he was confident he would be able to find a minor league deal somewhere. And he has. The 31-year-old had a mediocre 4.49 ERA and 95/75 K/BB ratio over 132 1/3 innings last season with the Marlins and will function as starting pitching depth for Philadelphia. He'll report to extended spring training for now and could be an option for the rotation down the line.

    • Steve Cishek worked a perfect ninth inning in a non-save situation against the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Advice: Cishek took the loss against the Reds his last time out, so it was good to see him back and pitching well. The Marlins don't have any better options and Cishek is actually pretty good for the most part, so there's little doubt he will continue to be the closer going forward.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Thu, May 16
    • Steve Cishek took his fourth loss after giving up three runs in 1 2/3 innings against the Reds on Thursday.
Advice: Cishek pitched a scoreless ninth with the Marlins down 2-1 and then was asked to stay in to pitch the 10th after the Marlins tied it. It's the second time this year he's been asked to get more than three outs, and both times he's taken losses. Cishek had been pitching better of late, so he should be safe in the closer's role. He's 5-for-6 in his save chances this year, blowing only his first opportunity on April 7.
