  • Centeno picks up two-run double in defeat
Juan Centeno went 3-for-5 with a two-run double and three total RBI in Sunday's loss to the Red Sox.

Advice: Centeno hit a two-run double off Rick Porcello in the second inning. He would later add another double, plus an eighth-inning RBI single. The 26-year-old backstop has picked up five hits in his last eight at-bats. For the season as a whole, he is slashing .265/.301/.398 with two homers and 16 RBI. There is no fantasy intrigue here. Today, 4:10 pm
  • David Robertson allows three solo homers
David Robertson gave up three solo homers in the top of the ninth inning Sunday versus the Tigers.

Advice: Nick Castellanos, Tyler Collins, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia all went deep to tie the game at 4-4. But the White Sox rallied to win it in the bottom of the ninth, which actually gave Robertson his second win of the season. He has allowed seven earned runs in four innings since the All-Star break and now has a 4.58 ERA for the year. If the White Sox can find a team to take on his contract ahead of the August 1 trade deadline, they should probably pull the trigger. Today, 3:12 pm
  • Braves shopping Aybar, Frenchy, relievers
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal was told by a rival executive that the Braves have been "aggressively shopping" Erick Aybar, Jeff Francoeur and their left-handed relievers.

Advice: Aybar had a nice June but has fell back to earth again in July. Francoeur entered play Sunday batting .288/.331/.450 against left-handed pitching, so it's possible he could fill a niche role. The Braves surely won't be expecting much. Today, 2:06 pm
  • Wei-Yin Chen headed to DL with elbow injury
Marlins placed LHP Wei-Yin Chen on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 21, with a left elbow sprain.

Advice: Chen having an elbow issue was first reported by SiriusXM's Craig Mish. Manager Don Mattingly said that the club is hopeful the injury isn't serious, but it sounds like they might not know for sure until after Chen is examined further. Jarred Cosart has placed Chen in the rotation for the time being, but the Marlins are expected to seek rotation help before the trade deadline. Today, 1:20 pm

  • Will Middlebrooks leaves with strained leg
Will Middlebrooks left Sunday's game versus the Cubs with a right lower leg strain.

Advice: Middlebrooks tweaked his leg while popping out in the third inning. It's unclear whether it could be more than a day-to-day injury, but the Brewers should offer up more on his status at some point. Today, 12:51 pm

  • Fowler sitting out with 'general soreness'
Dexter Fowler is not in Sunday's lineup due to "general soreness," according to Cubs manager Joe Maddon.

Advice: He could just be a little sore after playing two straight games following a disabled list stint. Fowler should be ready to go on Monday. Jason Heyward is in center field, Ben Zobrist is in left and Tommy La Stella is at second base Sunday. Today, 10:03 am

  • Anthony Ranaudo recalled from Triple-A
White Sox recalled RHP Anthony Ranaudo from Triple-A Charlotte.

Advice: Ranaudo holds a 3.03 ERA and 71/12 K/BB ratio over 92 Triple-A innings this season. He'll be utilized in a relief role for now. Today, 9:59 am
  • Rangers ink Craig Breslow to minors deal
Rangers signed LHP Craig Breslow to a minor league contract.

Advice: Breslow struggled for the Marlins both in the majors and at Triple-A before being released earlier this month. He'll turn 36 next month but the Rangers will take a no-risk shot on him. Today, 9:44 am

  • Arismendy Alcantara optioned to Triple-A
Athletics optioned INF/OF Arismendy Alcantara to Triple-A Nashville.

Advice: He's clearly out to accommodate the arrival of Sunday's starter, Jesse Hahn. Alcantara has three hits in 13 at-bats in his brief time with the big club this season. Today, 9:18 am

  • Mookie Betts (knee) out again on Sunday
Mookie Betts (knee) remained out of the Red Sox' lineup Sunday.

Advice: He's missed two straight starts after departing Friday's contest with a sore right knee. The good news is Betts is expected to be available off the bench and is hoping to be back in the lineup Monday. Brock Holt is in right field and Bryce Brentz is in left Sunday. Today, 8:33 am

  • Report: Chen injury could be elbow related
SiriusXM's Craig Mish reports that Wei-Yin Chen's injury is arm related and is "could be (his) elbow."

Advice: The Marlins announced Saturday that Chen would not start Monday, but they didn't reveal the nature of his injury. It's unclear at this point how serious the ailment might be, but we should find out before long. Jarred Cosart is taking Chen's spot in the rotation for now, but the club is almost surely going to land a starter prior to the trade deadline. Today, 8:19 am

  • Mikie Mahtook (hand) to hit off a tee
Mikie Mahtook (hand) will hit off a tee Sunday.

  • Sano has three hits, homer in slugfest win
Miguel Sano went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI as the Twins outlasted the Red Sox 11-9 on Saturday.

Advice: Sano had three of the team's 19 hits, including his solo home run in the eighth inning. The dinger was his 15th of the season and his fourth in the month of July. It has been a good month all around for the 23-year-old, who is hitting .251/.349/.474 in his first full season in the bigs. Yesterday, 10:00 pm

  • Smyly gives up one run in six innings on Sat.
Drew Smyly held the Athletics to only one run in six innings but had to settle for a no-decision after the Rays' bullpen blew the save on Saturday.

Advice: He gave up six hits and one walk and fanned only one batter in the ballgame. The lack of strikeouts is unusual for Smyly, who has whiffed more than a batter per inning this year. The win would really have been nice for his owners, who have suffered through his 2-11 record this year. He will take his 5.42 ERA into his next start at home against the Yankees. Yesterday, 9:29 pm
  • Orlando collects three more hits vs. Rangers
Paulo Orlando went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Saturday's loss to the Rangers.

Advice: Orlando resides in the lower half of the Royals order, but the 30-year-old just keeps hitting. He's now batting .323/.347/.404 through 70 games. If Orlando ever moves to a more prime spot in the lineup, he could be worth a look outside of AL-only leagues. Yesterday, 9:21 pm
  • Hamels gives up unearned run in win over KC
Cole Hamels allowed only an unearned run over 5 1/3 innings of work in a win over the Royals on Saturday.

Advice: Hamels wasn't as efficient as he was in a dominant win over the Cubs his last time out, giving up five hits and walking three on Saturday, but the result was the same. The southpaw has now won six of his last seven decisions and is 11-2 on the year. Hamels owns a shiny 2.87 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 120/50 K/BB ratio ahead of Thursday's rematch with these same Royals. Yesterday, 9:17 pm
  • Wei-Yin Chen scratched from start on Monday
Wei-Yin Chen has been scratched from his scheduled start Monday against the Phillies.

Advice: It's an injury, but there are no specifics yet. Look for an update Sunday morning. Jarred Cosart will be called up from Triple-A New Orleans to take the hill instead. Yesterday, 8:43 pm

  • Mookie Betts (knee) absent from BoSox lineup
Mookie Betts (knee) is not in the Red Sox starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Betts was removed from Friday's game due to what has been termed as minor soreness in his right knee, and Red Sox manager John Farrell wanted to be safe and give him an extra day to rest. Expect to see him back atop the lineup for Sunday's series finale. Yesterday, 12:27 pm

  • Fowler has monster game in return from DL
Dexter Fowler celebrated his return from the disabled list by going 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored in Friday’s win over the Brewers.

Advice: Fresh off missing a month and change with a hamstring injury, Fowler didn’t need any time to shake the rust. He made an immediate impact by socking a leadoff homer against Jimmy Nelson before adding an RBI double one inning later. The 30-year-old faded a bit in June prior to the injury, but he still owns a cool .298/.405/.504 batting line on the year. Friday, 8:50 pm

  • Betts forced to leave game with knee soreness
Mookie Betts was forced to leave Friday's game against the Twins due to right knee soreness.

Advice: Betts started the game off with a bang, belting a leadoff home run for the second consecutive night. It's unclear when exactly he sustained the injury, though it doesn't sound serious. Betts is listed as day-to-day. Friday, 6:43 pm

  • Dexter Fowler (hamstring) back from the DL
Cubs activated OF Dexter Fowler from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: Fowler's recovery from a strained right hamstring came along a little more slowly than expected, but he's ready to roll now. He's in center field and batting leadoff Friday against Jimmy Nelson and the Brewers. Friday, 2:55 pm

  • Betts hits leadoff homer in win over Twins
Mookie Betts finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored in a win over the Twins on Thursday.

Advice: Betts jumped on the first pitch he saw from Twins starter Tyler Duffey, leading off the game with a shot over the Green Monster. He added an RBI double in the Red Sox' four-run eighth inning. Betts now ranks among the league leaders in runs scored and runs batted in from the leadoff spot, a testament to the kind of year he's having. The five-tool beast is now hitting .306/.345/.527 with 19 homers, 62 RBI, 78 runs scored and 16 stolen bases on the season. Thursday, 7:09 pm

  • Fowler (hamstring) to join Cubs this weekend
Cubs GM Jed Hoyer said Dexter Fowler (hamstring) will rejoin the team this weekend in Milwaukee.

Advice: The exact day of his arrival is unclear, but it could be Friday for the opener of the three-game series. Fowler appeared in both games of a doubleheader Wednesday with Triple-A Iowa, going 1-for-5 with a double and a walk. The 30-year-old center fielder will return to a shiny .290/.398/.483 batting line. Thursday, 10:26 am

  • Fowler (hamstring) goes 1-for-5 in rehab
Dexter Fowler (hamstring) went 1-for-5 with a double and a walk in a doubleheader Wednesday with Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Jorge Soler only played in the first game and went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. Fowler should be ready to return to the Cubs' active roster this weekend if he can avoid a physical setback over the next couple of days. He's been on the disabled list since June 19 because of a right hamstring strain. Thursday, 7:08 am

  • Betts goes 3-for-5 and steals a base on Wed.
Mookie Betts went 3-for-5, including two doubles, and stole a base on Wednesday.

Advice: Betts is rocking an amazing .302/.342/.516 slash line with 18 homers, 75 runs, 60 RBI and 16 steals. He is on pace to easily surpass his totals from last year's breakout season in every category. Wednesday, 8:36 pm

  • Chen gives up four runs in loss to Phillies
Wei-Yin Chen was touched up for four runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Phillies on Wednesday.

Advice: He managed to fan five batters without walking anyone but got hit early and often. The loss moves his record to 5-4 with a 4.99 ERA. He has a league-average strikeout rate and an excellent walk rate. Home runs have been the problem this year. He has given up 20 longballs in 19 starts. Wednesday, 7:14 pm

Athletics recalled INF/OF Arismendy Alcantara from Triple-A Nashville.

Advice: Alcantara has 28 steals in 31 attempts and a .750 OPS in 77 games this season between the Triple-A affiliates of the Cubs and Athletics. The versatile 24-year-old could take on fantasy value if he finds regular at-bats. Wednesday, 9:07 am

  • David Robertson gives up four runs in loss
David Robertson gave up four runs in the ninth to take his third blown save Monday against the Mariners.

Advice: Though they did fine inventing cheap closers for several years, the White Sox decided to ante up $46 million for Robertson prior to last year. He's featured strong peripherals since, but he's blown 10 saves in 67 opportunities, essentially making him an average closer. The White Sox should have directed their efforts elsewhere. Monday, 10:26 pm
  • Drew Smyly gives up five runs to Rockies
Drew Smyly gave up five runs in five innings Monday in a loss to the Rockies at Coors.

Advice: The Rays gave Smyly an extra-long break in an effort to try to help him out of his funk, but he didn't have any success working on 11 days' rest tonight. He still doesn't seem hopeless, but 0-7 with a 7.60 ERA over a 10-start span just isn't very good. Monday, 9:52 pm
  • Fowler to begin rehab assignment Tuesday
Dexter Fowler (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.

Advice: He'll be joined by Jorge Soler, who is coming back from a hamstring injury. Fowler appeared in one rehab game for Low-A South Bend before the All-Star break but quickly abandoned it when he realized he wouldn't be ready for the All-Star Game in San Diego. He shouldn't need more than a few games to shake off the rust. Jul 18, 1:04 pm

  • Marlins pull the plug on Craig Breslow
    Marlins released LHP Craig Breslow.

Advice: The veteran left-hander was sporting an awful 6.46 ERA for Triple-A New Orleans. Breslow made the Marlins' Opening Day roster but was demoted only a month into the season. Given his considerable experience and ability to get left-handers out, Breslow shouldn't have too much trouble finding a new team. Jul 18, 12:25 pm

  • Hamels dominates Cubs over eight innings
Cole Hamels yielded just one unearned run over eight innings Sunday as the Rangers beat the Cubs.

Advice: Hamels out-dueled Chicago starter John Lackey, who also went eight innings but gave up four runs on two walks and six hits. Hamels walked none, struck out seven, and scattered four hits -- three singles, one double -- over his eight dominant frames. The left-hander boasts a 10-2 record, 3.00 ERA, and 116 strikeouts over 120 innings this season. Jul 17, 1:44 pm
  • Miguel Sano not in Sunday's lineup
Miguel Sano is absent from the Twins' lineup Sunday.

Advice: The Twins are also resting Joe Mauer and Byron Buxton. They have Robbie Grossman in the designated hitter spot, Kennys Vargas at first base and Eddie Rosario in left field. Jul 17, 9:42 am

  • Chen gives up four runs in six innings on Fri
Wei-Yin Chen surrendered four runs on six hits in six innings but did not factor into the decision in the Marlins' 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the Cardinals on Friday.

Advice: He struck out five and walked one. All the damage came in the fourth inning when he gave up a solo homer to Stephen Piscotty and a three-run homer to Tommy Pham. He has given up 19 home runs already in his 18 starts. Chen is having a poor year in a pitchers' park in Miami after having a very good year in a hitters' park in Baltimore last season. He will take his 5-2 record and 4.90 ERA into a road matchup with the Phillies next week. Jul 15, 10:05 pm

  • Robertson (leg) available to pitch Friday
David Robertson (leg) said that he's available to pitch Friday against the White Sox.

Advice: Good news. Robertson didn't pitch in the final series before the All-Star break due to a strained left leg, but evidently it's not serious. He should be ready to go if a save chance presents itself. Jul 15, 3:45 pm
  • Fowler (hamstring) nearing rehab games
Dexter Fowler (hamstring) is expected to begin a rehab assignment early next week.

Advice: He'll hang with his Cubs teammates all weekend, getting in daily workouts, before joining up with one of the organization's minor league affiliates for three or four rehab games. Fowler has been on the disabled list since June 19 because of a right hamstring injury. He was forced to miss Tuesday night's MLB All-Star Game. Jul 15, 8:29 am
