    • Orioles recalled 3B Danny Valencia from Triple-A Norfolk.
Advice: Valencia has had a big year for Norfolk, batting .306 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI in 40 games. He went deep seven times over his past 10 contests. Valencia figures to see some at-bats in the DH spot.

    • Luis Cruz is nursing a sore throwing elbow.
Advice: He could be placed on the disabled list, as Mark Ellis (quad) is ready to be activated. Cruz is hitting a pathetic .096/.118/.096 this season and has seen his playing time dwindle of late.

    • Willie Bloomquist (oblique) will play in an extended spring training on Thursday.
Advice: He'll play in 1-2 extended spring games before beginning a rehab assignment if all goes well. Barring another setback, Bloomquist should be ready for activation before the end of the month.

    • Matt Carpenter has hit safely in all but two May games.
Advice: The young infielder is third in the NL with 33 runs scored. Carpenter's slash line of .263/.333/.442 in April was solid, but he's really turned up the heat in May, batting .375/.470/.482. If Carpenter can convert some of his doubles (14) into home runs (three), he'll eradicate a fantasy weakness to this point. Despite his hot stick, Carpenter has driven in only 14 runs. He's not a threat to run, either.

    • Aramis Ramirez (knee) is not in the Brewers' lineup Sunday.
Advice: He's now sat out two of the last four games. Ramirez has five hits -- including two three-run homers -- in the two games he has played during the stretch, but his left knee remains a problem and manager Ron Roenicke anticipates it being one for a while longer. At this point, it doesn't appear that a trip to the DL is in the plans, but A-Ram will continue to see regular days of rest.

    • Aramis Ramirez connected for a pair of three-run homers in Friday's loss to the Cardinals.
Advice: Ramirez did his best to keep the Brewers in the ballgame, but it ultimately wasn't enough to keep up with the Cardinals' offensive attack. The 34-year-old has already served a lengthy stint on the DL this season due to a knee injury, but if healthy he should be one of the most valuable fantasy third baseman once again.

    • Maicer Izturis went 1-for-4 with a single in Saturday's loss to the Yankees.
Advice: Izturis isn't walking or making contact this season, and you already know his swing is punchless. Toronto was hoping for more than a .218/.242/.331 slash line when they signed Izturis from the Angels over the winter to a three-year, $9 million deal and the Jays recently sat him in three of four games.

    • Marco Scutaro went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored Friday against the Rockies.
Advice: Ho-hum, just another multi-hit night for the hottest hitter in the game. Scutaro now has a 16-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average from .215 to .327 in the process. The 37-year-old is not going to provide much in the way of pop or speed, but keep running him out there in all formats until he cools down.

    • Marco Scutaro will serve as the designated hitter for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays.

    • Mark Trumbo slugged his 10th home run of the season Saturday in the Angels' 12-9 win over the White Sox.
Advice: Trumbo's solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning completely threw off White Sox starter Hector Santiago, who had been on a roll. Trumbo then added a run-scoring double in the fifth against White Sox reliever Nate Jones. Trumbo is currently on pace for 38 homers and 109 RBI, and he's talented enough to come at least somewhat close to those totals.

    • Mark Reynolds went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, an RBI single and a walk-off fielder's choice in Saturday's win over the Mariners.
Advice: Reynolds drove in three runs on the day. The fielder's choice came with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, as catcher Jesus Montero was unable to keep his foot on home plate on a throw from shortstop Brendan Ryan. Reynolds has been one of the AL's most productive hitters thus far, batting .268/.354/.580 through 40 games. He's tied with the Yankees' Robinson Cano for the American League lead with 12 homers.

    • Indians manager Terry Francona said Mark Reynolds "will get the majority of the time at third" base following the demotion of Lonnie Chisenhall.
Advice: Reynolds is making his third straight start at the position Tuesday since Chisenhall's demotion. He offers below average defense at the hot corner, but with the way he's swinging the bat, the Indians don't really care. Having Reynolds at third should ultimately mostly help Ryan Raburn and Jason Giambi get more playing time. Mike Aviles will also see some starts at the hot corner

    • Pinch-hitter Chad Tracy homered off Huston Street in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Nationals to a 6-5 win over the Padres on Friday.
Advice: Incredibly, it was the first RBI for a Nationals pinch-hitter in 42 games this season. It was also the sixth homer surrendered by Street in 17 1/3 innings, tripling his total from his 39 innings pitched last year.

    • Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Friday that Jerry Hairston Jr. (knee, groin) had "a little bit of a setback."
Advice: Hairston was placed on the disabled list earlier this month with a left groin strain, but he's now dealing with a knee issue. The setback means that he won't be activated from the DL next week when first eligible. The Dodgers are expected to send Hairston on a rehab assignment before he's cleared to return.

    • Jordan Pacheco went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI in Friday's 10-9 win over the Giants.
Advice: Pacheco had an RBI ground out in the bottom of the second inning while his fifth-inning grand slam broke a 5-5 tie. With a .313/.360/.410 batting line over 26 games this season, the 27-year-old continues to be a useful player for Colorado. Todd Helton isn't a good bet to hold up and will require regular rest no matter what, so Pacheco should continue to have value in NL-only leagues.

    • Angels claimed INF Chris Nelson off waivers from the Yankees.
Advice: Nelson was DFA'd by the Yankees earlier this week and batted just .222 (8-for-36) with two doubles and two RBI in 10 games since being traded. He should provide depth at third base behind Alberto Callaspo with the Angels. Scott Cousins has been dropped from the 40-man roster in a corresponding move.

Advice: He was cleared to make room for David Adams on the active roster. Nelson was acquired from the Rockies two weeks ago and batted .222 (8-for-36) with two doubles and two RBI in 10 games with the club. He should draw some interest on waivers.

    • Royals manager Ned Yost said Saturday that he's not going to stop giving Mike Moustakas playing time despite his early-season struggles.
Advice: "The kid is going to be fine," Yost said. "Yes, he's fighting it right now. They're all fighting it." It's encouraging to hear from the manager, considering Moustakas was hitting .189/.261/.331 heading into Saturday's action. There were high hopes for the 24-year old third baseman heading into the 2013 season, and there's still plenty of time for him to turn it around and make a positive impact this year.

    • Pedro Alvarez went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's 5-4 win over the Astros.
Advice: His 462-foot blast tied the game in the eighth inning and the Pirates went on to win in bottom of the ninth after Jake Elmore and Jimmy Paredes collided while going after a pop-up. Alvarez is still hitting just .197 on the year, but he has seven home runs and 20 RBI through 38 games.

    • CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Padres don't intend to trade Chase Headley.
Advice: Headley has remained firm in his stance that he doesn't want to discuss a contract extension during the season, but that hasn't caused the Padres to panic. The 28-year-old third baseman won't become a free agent until after the 2014 season, so there is still plenty of time for the two sides to work out an agreement. And if they can't, the Padres can always explore the possibility down the road.

    • David Freese launched a grand slam in Friday's 7-6 win over the Brewers.
Advice: Well, that's one way to bust out of a slump. Freese entered play Friday homerless over his first 27 games this season. With the grand slam, he notched his first RBI since May 2. The Cardinals and fantasy owners are hoping that this night will serve as a turning point for his season.

    • David Freese is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup on Wednesday night against the Mets.
Advice: Freese went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts on Tuesday and is now batting just .216/.296/.250 with zero homers in 26 games this season. Matt Carpenter will start at third base and Daniel Descalso will play second.

    • Martin Prado is batting .275 in May.
Advice: Slowly but surely, Prado is digging himself out of an awful early-season slump. In his first month with the Snakes, Prado slashed an anemic .217/.266/.348. Over 15 games this month, he's batting a reasonable .275/.339/.333. It's certainly not the start Arizona expected after acquiring Prado in the Justin Upton trade and subsequently signed him to a four-year, $40 million contract extension. Sporting his trademark multi-position eligibility and playing in cozy Chase Field, now might be the time to buy low. Prado entered the year a .319/.370/.447 career hitter in Arizona.

    • Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored, leading the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Rangers in Arlington on Friday.
Advice: It marked the sixth time already this season that Cabrera has had at least three hits in a game. It's hard to believe, but he's off to an even better start than he was at this point of the season during his Triple Crown winning campaign in 2012. He'll head into play on Saturday hitting a cool .376/.447/.606 with eight homers and 42 RBI.

    • Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-3 with his eighth home run of the season as the Tigers beat the Astros on Tuesday.
Advice: The home run was just a solo shot, so Cabrera only has 41 RBI to show for himself through May 14. He also doubled in the game, and he's hitting .375 on the year. There's nothing to say about the slugger that hasn't already been said. He's simply the best in the game right now.

    • Will Middlebrooks delivered a three-run double with two outs in the ninth to lead the Red Sox past the Rays 4-3 on Thursday.
Advice: Middlebrooks has been too often overmatched this year, but he is swinging better again of late. In his last seven games, he's 8-for-27, with all of those hits going for extra bases (seven doubles, one homer). He's also fanned a modest six times in that span after striking out 39 times in his first 32 games.

    • Will Middlebrooks hit his seventh home run as the Red Sox beat the Rays on Wednesday.
Advice: Middlebrooks also doubled on the night, raising his average to an underwhelming .208. Despite that low mark, he's been hitting for power as promised. More importantly, the 24-year-old has little competition for at-bats at third base. He should continue to supply home runs if nothing else.
