    • Trevor Plouffe said Wednesday that he passed his concussion test, but was placed on the 7-day disabled list because of his initial wooziness.
Advice: After what happened with Justin Morneau and Denard Span in previous seasons, the Twins didn't want to take any chances. Plouffe hopes to be back when he's first eligible next week.

    • Trevor Plouffe left Tuesday's game in the 10th inning after taking a knee to the head.
Advice: Plouffe was sliding into second base to break up a double play when Dan Uggla's knee caught him in the head. The third baseman was able to walk off the field without assistance but appeared to be a little woozy. He'll no doubt undergo concussion tests.

    • Mike Trout homered in the eighth inning Tuesday to complete his first cycle in the Angels' 12-0 massacre of the Mariners.
Advice: Trout struck out in his first at-bat, but he singled, tripled and doubled afterwards before delivered his ninth homer off Lucas Luetge in the eighth. He drove in five runs in all, and he became the youngest player to hit for the cycle since Mel Ott in 1929. Trout has his average up to .293, and he's currently on pace to finish the season with 32 homers, 112 runs scored, 122 RBI and 32 steals.

    • Rob Bradford of WEEI.com was told by a major league source that the Red Sox and Jacoby Ellsbury have not discussed a contract extension.
Advice: Ellsbury is represented by Scott Boras, so it's not a big surprise that there hasn't been much momentum for a deal with free agency looming this offseason. However, Ellsbury might not get the big payday he was hoping for if he doesn't turn things around. The 29-year-old is hitting just .242/.307/.335 through 45 games this season and owns a measly .666 OPS and 79 OPS+ dating back to the start of last year.

    • Red Sox manager John Farrell said he has considered moving Jacoby Ellsbury out of the leadoff spot.
Advice: Ellsbury is down to a .241/.303/.335 batting line after hitting just .179/.256/.218 so far in 18 games this month. Farrell wants to show confidence in his leadoff hitter, though, so he'll remain at the top of the order for. Shane Victorino is an option to replace Ellsbury at the top of the order if the center fielder doesn't pick it up.

    • Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the Red Sox' lineup Sunday.
Advice: Ellsbury had played every inning of every game to this point, so the club finally decided to give him a breather. The outfielder is batting just .189/.268/.230 in May. Shane Victorino is handling center field Sunday, while Daniel Nava is in right.

    • Josh Hamilton went 2-for-5 and hit a two-run homer off Aaron Harang on Tuesday.
Advice: Before the homer, Hamilton hadn't driven anyone except himself since April 29. It gave him his first multi-RBI game since April 14. Hamilton, though, is hitting better in May than he did early on; he's batting .250 with four homers and four doubles in 68 at-bats.

    • Josh Hamilton has been scratched from Saturday's lineup against the White Sox.

    • Justin Upton is not in the Braves' lineup Wednesday against the Twins.

    • Justin Upton smacked a go-ahead grand slam and knocked in five runs in Friday's 8-5 win over the Dodgers.
Advice: For all his early success, this was the first time he had driven in more than two runs in a game this season. Upton collected his first RBI with a ground out in the bottom of the third inning and put the Braves ahead with his grand slam off Paco Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth. It was the third grand slam of his career and his first since June 2, 2009. The 25-year-old outfielder currently leads the majors with 14 home runs and is just three shy of his total from all of last year.

Advice: Frazier has six homers and 27 RBI, but he's probably not going to get that average up until he cuts back on the strikeouts. He's fanned 44 times in 43 games this year, compared to 103 times in 128 games last season.

    • Xavier Paul has hit whenever he's been called upon by the Reds, slashing .270/.400/.405 over 90 plate appearances.
Advice: Since he was called up by the Reds last July, Paul has hit as well as any reserve outfielder, batting .294/.389/.438 with four homers and 20 RBI in 160 at-bats. Paul has cost Cincy four runs below replacement defensively in limited opportunities this year, so he'll have to keep his lumber warm to steal at-bats.

    • Jimmy Paredes went 3-for-3 with his first home run of the season but the Astros lost to the Royals on Tuesday.
Advice: Paredes' homer, a three-run shot, gave the Astros a lead in the fourth inning. He also added two singles on the night to bring his line to .268/.311/.439 through 14 games since being recalled. With the release of Rick Ankiel, it seems Paredes will continue to see plenty of playing time in the Houston outfield.

    • Darin Mastroianni will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a bone chip on his left ankle, and will be sidelined for at least six weeks.
Advice: It was a very discouraging sign when Mastroianni, who was already progressing slowly in his recovery, was uncomfortable testing his ankle during light sprints on Wednesday. • Adam Eaton is dealing with renewed soreness in his left elbow and has returned to Phoenix for an examination.
Advice: Bad news. Eaton, who was diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in March, began playing in rehab games earlier this month and felt well enough to return to center field last week. However, the pain has returned. The worst-case scenario would be season-ending Tommy John surgery, but it's not clear if that's a consideration yet. But it's obviously a concern.

Advice: It's the first time he's played the field during his rehab assignment, as he had been limited to DH duty. Eaton was scheduled to play the field again on Saturday before being re-evaluated by the Diamondbacks. He should be activated before the end of the month. Manager Kirk Gibson said he's "not really worried about" finding enough playing time for all the members of a deep group of outfielders. "If we have guys, we'll find places for them to play," the manager added.

    • Andre Ethier is out of Wednesday's lineup, in part because Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he wanted to put out his "most competitive lineup" and one that would "fight the hardest."
Advice: Ouch. Ethier is only hitting .264 with four homers and a .758 OPS this season, but it's hard to see how Scott Van Slyke is a better option against right-hander Wily Peralta. Either way, Mattingly sounds like someone who is feeling the pressure of his team's struggles. This could be the beginning of the end for him in Los Angeles.

    • Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday that the club has discussed calling up prospect outfielders Yasiel Puig and Joc Pederson.
Advice: Very interesting. However, while the Dodgers are struggling to score runs, it's hard to see a great fit for playing time as long as Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, and Carl Crawford are healthy. Puig, 22, is batting .314/.385/.579 with six homers and a .964 OPS through 32 games this season with Double-A Chattanooga. He's now batting .352/.384/.536 through 42 games, and his move to the No. 3 hole seems to be permanent. Advice: The double was Rios' 11th of the year, and he's now hitting .306/.369/.559 this season. As is his history, this was supposed to be a down season for the 32-year-old, but he's bucking the trend thus far. He now has 26 RBI through 44 games.

Advice: It was another pinch-hit home run and it sent the game to extra innings. Gattis still has a weak .302 on-base percentage and doesn't play enough anymore to carry relevance in mixed fantasy leagues, but he should remain a dangerous bat off the Atlanta bench all year.

Advice: The A's are hoping Smith's slump is over. His OPS dropped from 1.072 on April 23 to .933 on April 30 to .755 on May 17, but he's now gone 4-for-8 in his last two games. Of course, it was in late April and early May that the A's really needed him. Now that Yoenis Cespedes, Coco Crisp and Chris Young are healthy again, Smith isn't so important to the attack anymore.
