    • Glen Perkins blew his first save of the season in Tuesday's 5-4, extra-innings loss to the Braves.
Advice: Minnesota is having about as much success in Atlanta as they did during the 1991 World Series. Perkins was summoned in the ninth inning and recorded two quick outs before Evan Gattis blasted a 412-foot bomb over the left-field fence. The 30-year-old lefty remains a lighthouse in the dark night that is Minnesota's pitching corps. Perkins saved 16 games last year while registering a 2.56 ERA and now has eight saves, a 3.45 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 25/5 K/BB rate over 16 appearances in 2013.

    • Jerome Williams blanked the Mariners for eight innings to win Tuesday night.
Advice: Williams has been a savior for the Angels, going 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA in four starts and seven relief appearances. He now figures to keep his rotation spot after Jered Weaver returns. AL-only leaguers should keep riding him with the Royals and Astros next on the schedule.

    • Jerome Williams held the White Sox to two runs over six innings Thursday in a no-decision loss.
Advice: Williams allowed five hits and no walks, striking out three. He exited with a 4-2 lead, which Dane De La Rosa blew, costing Williams his third victory. Williams has been a surprisingly stabilizing force in the Angels' putrid starting rotation, allowing nine earned runs over 23 innings in four starts since joining. He has a tasty matchup next week when he takes the hill Wednesday against the Mariners.

    • Matt Guerrier struck out a pair over two scoreless innings of relief Tuesday against the Rockies.
Advice: He entered the contest with just four punch outs, so last night's performance qualifies as an outburst. Guerrier used to be a holds machine for the Twins, but he's posted just 19 over the past three seasons for the Dodgers, four less than he had in his last year in Minnesota. An elbow injury cost the veteran most of last season. He owns a 3.45 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and ugly 6/6 K/BB rate over 18 appearances.

    • Rafael Soriano took his third blown save after giving up a run in the ninth against the Giants on Tuesday.
Advice: Soriano also took a blown save on Friday, but that was aided by a Ryan Zimmerman throwing error and he ended up notching the win in the 10th. Soriano still has nothing to worry about as far as job security -- he's more trustworthy than Drew Storen right now -- but the Nationals can't afford to continue being let down by their pen when their offense has been so poor.

    • Troy Patton holds a 4.05 ERA over 18 appearances.
Advice: The left-hander put up a 2.43 ERA over 54 appearances last season in his first full year in the majors. His encore isn't going as smoothly due to an increased rate of walks (more than double what it was last season) and decreased strikeouts (he's punching out 3.4 less batters per nine innings). Being increasingly hittable doesn't help either. After a 1.02 WHIP in 2012, Patton sits at 1.55 today.

    • Padres reliever Anthony Bass was charged with four runs in his second inning of work Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Advice: Bass was ripped off tonight. The first hitter to reach against him did so on a strikeout/wild pitch. The second had a clean single, but Yadier Molina followed with a double-play ball, only Everth Cabrera vacated second base way too early on the relay and wasn't given credit for the out. With runners on second and third with one out, Bud Black had Bass intentionally walk Jon Jay, and Daniel Descalso followed with a grand slam. That was certainly a mistake for Bass, but he could have been out of the inning before then and he didn't deserve for his ERA to jump from 2.60 to 3.64 tonight.

    • Matt Belisle tossed a scoreless inning of relief in Tuesday's victory over Arizona.
Advice: The veteran has notched a 3.86 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 21/7 K/BB rate in 21 games. He's also sixth in the National League with eight holds.

    • Andrew Miller is proving his 2012 breakout was no fluke, posting a 3.86 ERA and 24/8 K/BB rate over 20 appearances.
Advice: The sixth overall pick in 2006 has successfully saved his career in Boston's bullpen. Miller went 21-29 with a 5.79 ERA between 2006-2011, mostly as a starter for the Tigers, Marlins and Red Sox. He hasn't started a game in the last two seasons and has rewarded Boston with a 3.48 ERA over 73 appearances. Miller's current strikeout rate is by far the best of his career.

    • Aaron Harang was lit up for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings by the Angels on Tuesday.
Advice: Josh Hamilton and Howie Kendrick homered off him. Harang fell to 1-5 with an 8.58 ERA. The Mariners need to make a switch here, whether it's Jeremy Bonderman, Hector Noesi or James Paxton as the replacement. Erasmo Ramirez still isn't healthy, unfortunately.

    • Aaron Harang (back) threw a bullpen session Sunday with no issues and is in line to start on Tuesday in Anaheim.
Advice: Harang missed his last outing with some minor back stiffness, but he's alright now. The big righty holds a 7.30 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over five starts this season but does boast a 23/5 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 frames.

    • The Mariners think Aaron Harang (back) will be ready to make his next start.
Advice: Harang was scratched from Thursday's outing due to a stiff lower back, but it appears that he's not going to need a DL stint unless he has a setback over the next few days. The big right-hander holds a 7.30 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over five starts this season.

    • Wade Davis allowed three runs over five innings but escaped with a no-decision as the Royals beat the Astros on Tuesday.
Advice: Davis was fortunate to hold the Astros to just three runs, as he gave up eight hits and four walks on the night. After a strong start to the season, Davis now owns a 5.91 ERA and has won just one start since April 17. Fortunately for Davis, the Royals don't have any better options to replace him in the rotation at this point. His next start will come Sunday against the Angels.

    • Addison Reed picked up his 16th save on Tuesday in the White Sox' victory over the Red Sox.
Advice: Reed's 16 saves now rank behind only Jason Grilli and Mariano Rivera for the league lead, and he's blown just one opportunity on the year. The right-hander owns a 2.14 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, having struck out 24 batters in 21 innings. And after serving up six home runs last season, he's yet to be taken deep thus far. It's shaping up to be a big year for the young righty.

    • Addison Reed twirled a perfect ninth inning against the Angels Thursday for his 13th save.
Advice: Now 13-for-14 in save conversions, Reed is sitting pretty with a 2.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 22/8 K/BB rate over 18 innings. The 24-year-old is a top-tier fantasy closer.

    • Rafael Betancourt is considered day-to-day after being diagnosed with a tight right groin.
Advice: Betancourt had to leave Tuesday's game with the discomfort after throwing just two pitches. It doesn't sound like a serious ailment, but it's possible a DL stint could be in order if he doesn't recover as hoped over the next few days. Rex Brothers is worth scooping up.

    • Rafael Betancourt had to leave Tuesday's game with an apparent injury.
Advice: Betancourt entered the game in the top of the 10th but had to leave before throwing a pitch. He has been nursing a leg ailment recently, though it's not clear if that's what forced him from the game. The Rockies should offer an update soon, but fantasy owners would be wise to scoop up Rex Brothers just in case.

    • J.P. Howell's first season in Los Angeles is off to a strong start, as the left-hander has a 2.89 ERA through 19 appearances for the Dodgers.
Advice: Coming off a stellar 2012 campaign, having posted a 3.04 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 42/22 K/BB ratio in 55 appearances for the Rays, Howell inked a one-year, $2.85 million contract with the Dodgers. Howell is allowing a few more base runners this season (1.34 WHIP compared to 1.21 in 2012), but his strikeout rate is slightly up and, more importantly, he hasn't surrendered a home run yet.

    • Casey Fien struck out two in a perfect inning of relief Tuesday against the Braves.
Advice: The 28-year-old right-hander has a 4.19 ERA over 11 appearances. After getting pounded in limited run for the Tigers between 2009-2010, Fien has rejuvenated his career up north, posting a stingy 2.87 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 56 games since the Twins called him up on the Fourth of July, 2012.

    • Adam Wainwright limited the Padres to one run and four hits in 7 1/3 innings to pick up his sixth win Tuesday.
Advice: Wainwright had a 5.77 ERA on this day a year ago before finally turning around his season with a shutout of the Padres on May 22. This year, he's been on target since day one; he ranks in the top 10 in the NL in wins, ERA, WHIP and strikeouts.

    • Stephen Strasburg pitched seven innings of one-run ball, striking out seven, in a no-decision against the Giants on Tuesday.
Advice: Strasburg has allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts, dropping his ERA from 3.45 to 2.66. That overstates how well he's pitched -- he's given up nine unearned runs this season -- but tonight's performance was maybe the most impressive one he's put together this year and should give him something to build on.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Fri, May 17
    • Stephen Strasburg gave up two runs -- one earned -- over eight innings as the Nationals vanquished the Padres 6-2 on Thursday.
Advice: He walked three and struck out four, hurling 117 pitches before ceding to Rafael Soriano. Strasburg again wasn't at his best -- only 68 of those tosses were strikes -- but he handcuffed San Diego regardless. The 24-year-old right-hander has been considered a fantasy disappointment to this point, despite possessing a 2.83 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 55/18 K/BB rate. If everyone were judged similarly, we'd all be unemployed.

    • Bud Norris held the Royals scoreless through six innings but took a no-decision as the Astros lost on Tuesday.
Advice: Norris left with a 3-0 lead, but the bullpen proceeded to allow seven runs in the next three innings to rob him of a win. He has a 3.86 ERA this year, but he's struck out just 35 batters through 56 innings and is likely due for some regression. His next start will come Monday against the Rockies.

    • Bud Norris left Tuesday's start against the Royals following six scoreless innings after aggravating his back injury.
Advice: Norris was originally supposed to start Sunday after leaving his previous outing with back spasms but was pushed back just in case. Obviously, it appears that he's not over the ailment. The righty gave up just five hits and two walks over six frames before exiting Tuesday. The Astros should provide an update on his status after the game.

    • Jim Henderson earned his ninth save of the season as the Brewers beat the Dodgers 5-2 on Tuesday.
Advice: Henderson's save capped off a total of 5 2/3 scoreless innings from the Milwaukee bullpen. He surrendered a hit and a walk but struck out the other three batters he faced and now boasts a 0.95 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 23/5 K/BB ratio in 19 innings this season. The right-hander has been a waiver wire gem so far and should be a steady fantasy closer all year.

    • Wesley Wright holds a 2.95 ERA over 21 appearances.
Advice: Wright broke out in 2012, putting up a 3.27 ERA while striking out over a batter per inning. Over his first three seasons, batters teed off to the tune of a 5.33 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 134 games. In the last three years, Wright has turned into a fine LOOGY, posting a 2.94 ERA and 8.4/2.9 K/BB/9 rate. Owners in deep AL-only formats should note that Wright's WHIP this year (1.53) sits right around where it did during the dark years of his career. He's walking fewer batters then he ever has, but has surrendered 23 hits over 18 1/3 frames.

Advice: Corbin's April could have been written off as something of a fluke after he went 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA. However, he's now 4-0 with a 0.92 ERA in May. It's a pretty amazing transformation for a guy who went 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA and 14 homers allowed in 107 innings last year.

    • Jose Quintana held the Red Sox scoreless through 6 1/3 innings in the White Sox victory on Tuesday.
Advice: The left-hander allowed just three hits and two walks in the outing, striking out five. Quintana now has a 3.48 ERA, and the win was his first since April 24. His next start will come against the Cubs on Monday.

    • Jose Quintana surrendered four runs over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision victory against the Angels.
Advice: He struck out four and walked three. It was the fourth straight shaky outing from Quintana, who has yielded four, three, three and four runs in his last four trips to the bump, respectively. That stretch has inflated his ERA from 2.78 to 3.97. It has good odds of rising again on Tuesday against the Red Sox. Yank him from your mixed-league rotation, if you haven't already done so.

    • Joe Thatcher earned his fifth hold by tossing two-thirds of a scoreless inning against the Cardinals on Monday night.
Advice: When healthy, the southpaw has been terrific for the Padres. Between 2009-2011, he posted a 2.66 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 10.9 K/9 rate. This year he is 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 10/1 K/BB rate over 21 appearances. As an effective LOOGY who calls PETCO home, Thatcher is a solid middle reliever in deeper NL-only formats.

Advice: Born and bred in Minnesota, Neshek has been a decent middle reliever since he was unceremoniously waived by the Twins prior to the 2011 season. Over the last two seasons in Oakland, he's posted a 2.02 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 27/14 K/BB ratio over 42 appearances.
