  • Jayson Nix elects to become a free agent
Jayson Nix has elected to become a free agent.

Advice: Nix was outrighted off the Royals' 40-man roster and then rejected an assignment to Triple-A Omaha, instead opting to test the open market. The 32-year-old infielder is a .212/.282/.345 career hitter in the majors. Rotoworld.com

  • BoSox have had most serious talks for Hamels
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Phillies "have had the most serious talks" with the Phillies regarding a trade for ace Cole Hamels.

Advice: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported a few weeks ago that the Red Sox had already rejected a couple of trade proposals from the Phillies, but the dynamic has changed now that the Sox have signed both Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval. It's easy to make matches between Boston's surpluses and Philly's needs. Hamels, 30, is owed $96 million over the next four seasons with a $24 million option for 2019, but that's not terrible money in this market. Rotoworld.com

  • Braves have talked to A.J. Pierzynski
MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports that the Braves have talked to free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

Advice: They've also been in contact with David Ross as part of an ongoing search for a veteran backup to young catcher Christian Bethancourt. Pierzynski batted just .251/.288/.337 in 362 plate appearances this past season between the Red Sox and Cardinals. The 37-year-old should come cheap. Rotoworld.com

  • Josh Willingham, 35, retiring from baseball
Josh Willingham has retired from baseball.

Advice: The 35-year-old outfielder informed ESPN of that decision on Monday afternoon. Willingham probably could have done pretty well for himself on the market this winter, but he'll hang up his cleats to spend more time with his family. "After praying on my decision many times and talking to my wife, my father and ex-players who have gone through the same process toward the end of their careers, I have decided to retire," Willingham said. "I'm honored to have played for as many years as I have, and I feel even luckier to walk away on my own terms instead of having the decision made for me." Rotoworld.com

  • Mariners reach $100M extension with Seager
Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that the Mariners are on the verge of a seven-year, $100 million contract extension with third baseman Kyle Seager.

Advice: Seager only needs to pass a physical. He took another big step forward in 2014 at age 26, batting .268/.334/.454 with 25 home runs and 96 RBI in 159 games while also earning his first Gold Glove Award for his solid defense at the hot corner. The 27-year-old was going to be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. Now he'll be under contractual control with Seattle through at least 2021. Passan is hearing that deal will also carry a $20 million club option for 2022. Rotoworld.com
