  • Summoned to big-league bullpen
The Astros will recall Whitley from Triple-A Sugar Land prior to Tuesday's game versus Atlanta, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Whitley was once one of the top pitching prospects in baseball before his career got sidetracked by numerous injuries and also control problems. He got a late start to the season at Sugar Land because of a finger injury but returned to make three appearances, allowing four runs with a 4:2 K:BB over three innings. Whitley will work as a reliever for a bullpen that's in need of a fresh arm. Rotowire.com 39 minutes ago
  • Could work in bulk relief Tuesday
Yarbrough could be deployed as a bulk reliever in Tuesday's game against the Nationals or work as a multi-inning option as part of a bullpen day, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Advice: In an effort to keep rookie Yoshinobu Yamamoto on his normal schedule of five days' rest between starts, the Dodgers look to set to run with a six-man rotation this week. Since Walker Buehler (elbow) won't be ready to return from the 15-day injured list until next week and after Bobby Miller (shoulder) landed on the shelf over the weekend, the Dodgers will add two new pitchers to the rotation Tuesday and Wednesday. Yarbrough, last pitched Friday, but he covered just one inning in relief and should be capable of covering four or five frames Tuesday, if needed. The Dodgers are also planning to call up Kyle Hurt from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday to add some extra length out of the bullpen, so both Yarbrough and Hurt could be called upon to cover multiple innings if Los Angeles elects to use another reliever to open the game. • Undergoing further evaluation
Gipson-Long (forearm/groin) will receive further medical evaluation before the Tigers determine the next steps in his rehab program, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Gipson-Long was on a minor-league rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland while coming back from a groin injury, but he was pulled off the assignment last week after experiencing right forearm tightness. That he continues to be evaluated isn't a great sign that he'll be able to resume his minor-league assignment in the near future, but the Tigers should have more clarification on his status later this week. • Should face live hitters this month
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said April 6 that Cavalli (elbow) is expected to begin facing live hitters at some point this month, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Throwing live batting practice sessions would mark a step forward in Cavalli's recovery from his March 2023 Tommy John surgery, as the right-hander had been limited to tossing bullpen sessions during spring training. Cavalli will likely face live hitters in controlled settings for a few weeks before eventually heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment that will likely last for most of the 30-day rehab window. Cavalli opened the season on the 60-day injured list and isn't on track to make his 2024 debut until at least late May, though a June return is probably more realistic. Rotowire.com Today, 7:38 am
  • Produces quality start
Brown allowed one run on a hit and two walks over six innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out four in the win over Arizona.

Advice: After coughing up an RBI single in the second inning, Brown retired the final 13 batters he faced. He was crushed for six runs through just 1.2 frames in his MLB debut March 30 but has since given up just two runs over 14.2 innings. He dropped his ERA to 4.41 with a 15:6 K:BB through four MLB appearances. With Jameson Taillon (back) expected to return in the coming days, Brown's role with the Cubs isn't set in stone.
