    • Jesse Chavez yielded three runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Mariners on Saturday.
Advice: Chavez will head into the All-Star break with just one quality start in his last four tries, and he's rapidly approaching his career high for innings. We expect that the A's will sent him to the bullpen at some point, though it doesn't figure to happen immediately after the break.

    • Jesse Chavez worked six shutout innings, striking out nine, in a 5-0 victory against the Giants on Monday.
Advice: Chavez scattered four hits and walked two to win his first outing since June 15, and just his third since May 19. The right-hander boated a 2.78 ERA at the end of May, but he'd gone just 2-2 with a 4.11 ERA in six starts since the beginning of June prior to tonight. He gave up a fluky .340 BABIP during that stretch, though his 28/14 K/BB rate in 35 innings was asking for trouble. Having improved to 7-5 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, Chavez is scheduled to start Saturday in Seattle.

    • Filling in for Josh Beckett, Paul Maholm held the Padres scoreless for six innings on Saturday.
Advice: Maholm entered with a 5.18 ERA and he hadn't pitched more than 2 1/3 innings in an outing in two months, so of course he combined on a shutout of the Padres. He allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out four while throwing 65 pitches in his six innings. It's the first time since April 14, 2013 that he's escaped a start without allowing a run.

    • Paul Maholm is likely to start on Saturday against the Padres in place of the injured Josh Beckett (hip).
Advice: He's expected to take the ball unless he's needed relief on Thursday or Friday. Red Patterson will be on standby at Triple-A Albuquerque in case Maholm does have to pitch in relief over the next couple days. He can be avoided for fantasy purposes.

    • Ian Kennedy went unrewarded after blanking the Dodgers for eight innings on Saturday.
Advice: Kennedy has nine starts this season in which he's allowed one or no runs, but he has just seven wins total (six coming in those games, plus one more in which the Padres offense flexed its muscles in a 3-2 victory). The Padres have scored a total of 15 runs in his nine losses.

    • Ian Kennedy allowed one run over seven innings and struck out nine to beat the Rockies in Coors Field on Monday night.
Advice: After a bumpy June, Kennedy has opened July 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts. Overall, he's struck out 125 batters in 116 1/3 innings this season. He should bring a nice return if the Padres opt to move him this month.
