LHP Cole Hamels' struggles in 2009 may best be explained by a modern pitching metric that AL Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke cited as the only statistic to which he pays attention. FIP, short for "fielding independent pitching," was invented by sabermetrics expert Tom Tango and is defined by Baseball Prospectus as a "measure of all those things for which a pitcher is specifically responsible." It focuses exclusively on walks, home runs, strikeouts and hit batters, and therefore, it's supposed to give the clearest indication of "how well a pitcher pitched, regardless of how well his fielders fielded." Hamels posted a 4.32 ERA in 32 starts, but according to The Hardball Times, his FIP was only 3.71, practically identical to his 3.70 FIP from 2008, when he posted a 3.09 ERA.
