    • The Chicago Cubs and Grabow have agreed to a two-year contract.
Advice: The 31-year-old Grabow combined to go 3-0 with a 3.36 ERA last season in a career-high 75 relief appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cubs. He pitched 30 games for the Cubs after he was traded from the Pirates along with lefty Tom Gorzellany for pitchers Jose Ascanio and Kevin Hart, and minor league infielder Josh Harrison on July 30.

    • The Cubs agreed to a two-year contract with Grabow on Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Recommendation: Grabow posted a 3.24 ERA in 30 appearances with the Cubs last season. He will head into the 2010 season as the team's top left-handed reliever.

    • LHP John Grabow and the Cubs closed in on a two-year deal, something that GM Jim Hendry had been working on since the end of the season. Grabow, 30, came to the Cubs in a July 30 trade with Pittsburgh. He appeared in a career-high 75 games between the two clubs, going 3-0 with a 3.36 ERA overall. He figures to anchor the left side of the Chicago bullpen in the late innings.

    • RHP Aaron Heilman was acquired from the Cubs for two minor league players Nov. 19, as the Diamondbacks took their first step in adding veteran help to the bullpen. Heilman, 31, was 4-4 with one save and a 4.11 ERA in 70 appearances in 2009, his first season with the Cubs after spending the first six seasons of his career with the Mets. "Aaron has been a successful, durable reliever who will add experience and stability to our bullpen," D-backs general manager Josh Byrnes said. Heilman is 26-37 with 10 saves and a 4.22 ERA in 375 career games. He has one year of arbitration eligibility remaining after playing for $1,625,000 in 2009, and his salary is likely to be in the mid-$2 million range next year. The Cubs acquired LHP Scott Maine and 1B Ryne White in the deal. Maine, a seventh-round pick in 2007, was 4-5 with seven saves and a 2.90 ERA while splitting 2009 between Class AA Mobile and Class AAA Reno. White, a fourth-round pick in 2008, hit .266 with six homers and 52 RBIs at Class A Visalia this year.

    • Heilman has been acquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Chicago Cubs for two minor league prospects.
Advice: The 31-year-old right-hander was 4-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 70 appearances last season, striking out 65 and walking 34. He spent six seasons with the New York Mets before he was traded to Seattle last December, then dealt to the Cubs a month later.

    • C Jesus Flores is on schedule to return from right shoulder surgery by spring training, general manager Mike Rizzo said recently. Rizzo said Flores had arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip in his right elbow, but "that shouldn't set back his progress," he said.
      (Yahoo! Sports)
  • Wed, Nov 18
    • Flores, who is already recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, had surgery on his elbow to remove a bone chip, the Washington Post reports. Nationals GM Mike Rizzo says Flores is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
Recommendation: The elbow surgery isn't expected to slow his overall recovery. It was previously thought he may not be ready to return until after spring training started, so it sounds like his recovery from the shoulder surgery is going better than expected. We'll need to watch his healthy closely early in spring training.

    • 2B Mike Fontenot has been awarded "Super 2" status based on service time and will be arbitration eligible this winter. The Cubs likely will tender Fontenot a contract even though he suffered a down year in 2009 after opening eyes in '08. Fontenot's batting average fell from .305 to .236, and he put up only a .301 on-base percentage. The Cubs thought that Fontenot could handle everyday chores in the field after they traded IF-OF Mark DeRosa, but Fontenot wasn't always up to it. With IF-OF Jeff Baker on the team, Fontenot can get more rest in 2010.

    • OF Alex Rios will be getting his first of what could be two visits by hitting coach Greg Walker in the next few weeks, as the two will sit down and watch video of his struggles with the Sox. Walker saw a few things Rios was doing differently but believed most of it came from simply pressing and trying to do too much. In other words, very easy fixes. The visits will be more to reassure Rios that he has a good track record as a big leaguer and there's no reason to believe he's lost it.

    • C/1B Jeff Clement will get what could be his last shot at becoming a major league regular in February when he reports to the Pirates' spring training camp as the nominal favorite to be the opening-day first baseman. Clement was the centerpiece of the five-player package the Pirates received from Seattle in a July 29 trade for Jack Wilson and Ian Snell, and Pittsburgh immediately began converting him into a first baseman at Class AAA Indianapolis.

    • LF Manny Ramirez might have agreed to his $20 million player option for 2010, but he will merely see a quarter of that next year. Ramirez's contract stipulates that $15 million of that salary will be deferred. He will get $3.33 million on June 30, 2011, $3.33 more on June 30, 2012 and $8.33 million June 30, 2013.

    • SS Ryan Theriot is in the Cubs' plans to open the season at that position, but if minor league phenom Starlin Castro comes to camp and impresses, it's possible Theriot could eventually move to second base. That's a long way off, considering Castro has just one full year of pro ball in the U.S. under his belt. The Cubs would like Theriot to rebound from a season that saw his OBP fall 44 percentage points and his walks-to-strikeouts ratio get turned on its head the wrong way.

    • RHP Chan Ho Park will test the free-agent market before deciding whether to re-sign with the Phillies. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said he has "made some proposals" to Park's agent, but "right now, we're not there yet, unfortunately." The Phillies would like to re-sign Park as a reliever. Two weeks ago, Park said during a press conference in Seoul that he'd still prefer to be a starter.

    • Park said in a news conference last week that he would still like to be a starter, the Delaware News Journal reports.
Recommendation: "I want to be a starter again," Park told the Korea Times. "I would really enjoy playing for the Phillies again, but my first consideration in making my decision is finding a circumstance that is right for me. I want to play for the Phillies again, but I also wouldn't mind joining a team I've never played with before." The Phillies will only be interested in bringing Park back as a reliever.

    • RHP Scott Proctor was signed to a one-year minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. He missed all of last season rehabbing from elbow ligament transplant surgery, and the Braves had such good luck with other pitchers returning from the Tommy John procedure: RHP Peter Moylan, RHP Tim Hudson and, to a lesser extent, LHP Mike Gonzalez.

    • SS Marco Scutaro has not ruled out accepting an arbitration offer from the Jays if one is offered, according to reports. Classified as a Type A free agent, the Jays would have to offer Scutaro arbitration if they want to receive two compensatory picks in the 2010 player draft. The Jays are interested in bring Scutaro, 34, back in 2010 after his career season where he hit .282 with a .379 on-base percentage. He also set career highs in walks (90), runs scored (100), home runs (12) and RBIs (60).

  • Wed, Nov 18
    • Scutaro hasn't ruled out the possibility of returning to the Jays on a one-year deal if he's offered arbitration, the team's official site reports.
Recommendation: It's hard to imagine he won't try to cash in on his career year and sign a multi-year offer somewhere but the Jays are fully expected to offer him salary arbitration in any event.

    • The Royals reinstated Waechter (shoulder) from the 60-day DL on Monday, the Kansas City Star reports.
Recommendation: He's going to need some time to rehab back from a torn labrum, so Waechter's return to the 40-man roster could be brief.

    • SS Stephen Drew has been mentioned as a potential trade candidate in national speculation, but D-backs president and CEO Derrick Hall told fans during his monthly chat session that Drew will not be moved. "That comes from other teams having interest and floating his name out there," Hall said. "He would be too tough to replace if we ever moved him. Strictly rumors." Drew was the third shortstop in major league history to hit 40 doubles, 10 triples and 20 home runs in the same season when he batted .291 with 44 doubles, 11 triples and 21 homers in 2008, although he slumped to .261 and 26, 12 and 12 after a slow start in 2009.

    • INF Ty Wigginton is a starter for the Orioles until the club signs two corner infielders. Wigginton, who is entering the second season of a two-year contract, offers the club flexibility in its off-season dealings. He can play first, second or third base, but the club would prefer him as a right-handed bat off the bench.

    • C Rob Johnson will undergo only three operations this offseason, not four. Johnson, who has already had work done on both hips and his right wrist, has a minor bone spur in his right elbow, but the decision apparently has been made for him not to have any more surgery. He should be good to go come spring training.
