    • INF Juan Castro, a 37-year-old free agent and veteran of 15 major league seasons, was close to signing a contract with the Phillies, his agent said Nov. 24. Castro must only pass the Phillies' medical tests, which will be administered after the Thanksgiving weekend, before an agreement is reached. The sides are believed to be discussing a one-year deal worth less than $1 million.

    • INF/OFs Jason Nix and Brent Lillibridge were again warned that their chances of making the team were in jeopardy, especially after the club signed Vizquel. Guillen has been sending warnings to each, especially in the offseason, that they needed to be better at the plate. "It means they have to do what I told them to do at the end of the season," Guillen said. "One thing about it is Omar can't play the outfield. Those kids showed me they can. But it depends how many pitchers we take."

    • INF Juan Uribe might not return to the Giants because of his asking price, so they're looking for someone else who could play multiple infield positions and be an offensive sparkplug. One obvious candidate is INF Mark DeRosa, whose agent has spoken with the Giants. DeRosa hit .250 with 23 homers and 78 RBIs in 139 games with Cleveland and St. Louis this year.

    • SS John McDonald, a free agent, and the Blue Jays agreed to terms on a two-year, $3 million contract. McDonald, who is gifted defensively but a weak hitter, received little playing time in 2009 due to the career season put in by SS Marco Scutaro, who is also a free agent. McDonald, 35, a fan favorite, can also play second base, third base and in a pinch, left field. He will be a backup infielder in 2010. In parts of 73 games last season, McDonald hit .258 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.

    • INF Omar Vizquel was signed to a one-year, $1.375-million contract last week, and manager Ozzie Guillen didn't expect there to be any waves with the veteran's presence. Guillen said he would get at-bats for Vizquel, while the infielder said he would also have no problem playing mentor for youngsters Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez.

    • Vizquel has agreed to $1,375,000, one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox.
Advice: The 42-year-old Vizquel is an 11-time Gold Glove winner and has played mostly shortstop during 21 major league seasons. He figures to add depth to Chicago's young infield.

    • INF Omar Vizquel proved last season he could handle a utility infield role when he hit .266 for the Texas Rangers and provided his usual sterling defense. The White Sox were suitably impressed and signed him to a one-year, $1.375 million contract. Chicago has young players at both middle-infield spots and third base, and Vizquel figures to be a good mentor as well as a quality backup. He will be playing for another Venezuelan (and a former shortstop), manager Ozzie Guillen.

    • 2B Freddy Sanchez doesn't necessarily have to be stuck to one position, said GM Brian Sabean, adding it's possible Sanchez -- recently signed to a two-year, $12 million contract -- could play a little third base. That means Sabean possibly could acquire another second baseman, and Florida's Dan Uggla has been linked to the Giants in trade talk.
