    • C Koyie Hill is one of the Cubs' arbitration-eligible players, but the Cubs figure to get a deal done with Hill and have both sides come away happy well before a hearing can be held. Hill, 30, a career backup, got into 83 games and supplanted starter Geovany Soto for several stretches. Hill hit only .237 with two homers, but he threw out 40 percent (20 of 50) of would-be base stealers, and Cubs pitchers like throwing to him.

    • Mauer has become only the second catcher in 33 years to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award. The Minnesota Twins star was a near-unanimous winner in voting announced Monday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, receiving 27 of 28 first-place votes and 387 points. Yankees teammates Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter were second and third.
Advice: Mauer topped the AL in batting with a .365 average. He also led in on-base percentage and slugging percentage - two categories that have gained importance in recent years in judging production.
