    • OF Ken Griffey Jr.'s one-year deal will be worth at least $2.35 million, and it could rise as high as $3.9 million. The contract includes bonuses based on Griffey's health and the team's attendance.

    • Griffey stands to earn nearly $4 million from the Seattle Mariners next season. According to contract figures obtained by The Associated Press on Monday, Griffey's deal signed this month to return to his original team for one more season as a 40-year-old calls for a $2.35 million base salary for 2010.
Advice: Baseball's active home run leader would earn $3.9 million if he again has at least 400 plate appearances, Seattle has an increased home attendance of 2.5 million fans and Griffey again does not go on the disabled list while remaining on the roster for the entire season. Griffey earned $3.15 million in 2009. That included $2 million in base pay plus $1.15 million of a potential $3 million in bonuses.

    • DH Hideki Matsui told reporters he would be disappointed if he did not return to the Yankees recently and added he was "not thinking of going to Japan" but would take the divorce as a "new challenge." Matsui spoke to reporters at former Yankees manager Joe Torre's Safe at Home foundation dinner and said his "feelings are still with the Yankees." Asked if he would consider it disappointing if he was not able to reach an agreement with the Yankees -- his only major league club -- Matsui said "I think it would be." The Yankees have been rumored to strongly consider cutting ties with the World Series MVP in an effort to free up the DH spot for their many veterans as a rotating slot.

    • OF Alex Rios will be getting his first of what could be two visits by hitting coach Greg Walker in the next few weeks, as the two will sit down and watch video of his struggles with the Sox. Walker saw a few things Rios was doing differently but believed most of it came from simply pressing and trying to do too much. In other words, very easy fixes. The visits will be more to reassure Rios that he has a good track record as a big leaguer and there's no reason to believe he's lost it.

    • DH Adam Lind and 2B Aaron Hill, the top two offensive threats on the Jays last season, were rewarded for their efforts as both received Silver Slugger Awards. They were the first Blue Jays to receive the award since CF Vernon Wells and 1B Carlos Delgado accomplished the feat in 2003. Hill, who earlier was named the AL's Comeback Player of the Year, hit .286 with 36 home runs, 37 doubles, 103 runs scored and 108 RBIs. Lind, meanwhile, hit .305 with 35 homers, 46 doubles and 114 RBIs.

    • CF Vernon Wells underwent successful surgery to repair cartilage damage on his left wrist last week. The Jays said that Wells is expected to be fully recovered and ready for spring training. In 2009 Wells had a miserable season. In 158 games, 684 at-bats, he hit just .260 with 15 home runs and 68 RBIs, totals that no doubt were affected by the wrist injury that plagued him the entire season. Wells' problem with his wrist was not revealed until a couple of weeks ago.

Wigginton, who is entering the second season of a two-year contract, offers the club flexibility in its off-season dealings. He can play first, second or third base, but the club would prefer him as a right-handed bat off the bench.

    • OF Torii Hunter has had lingering discomfort from the groin injury he suffered in May and might need surgery to repair a mild sports hernia. Hunter was examined by Dr. Daniel Cooper, team physician for the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Stars, and might have the surgery as early as next week. Recovery time is expected to be six weeks, which would allow Hunter to be at full strength for spring training.

    • Hunter may need to undergo sports hernia surgery this winter, the Orange County Register reports.
Recommendation: "I'm aware that he had to be further evaluated," Angels GM Tony Reagins said, declining to comment on the likelihood of Hunter requiring surgery. "We're still gathering information." Hunter required time on the DL with a groin injury after crashing into the outfield wall at Dodger Stadium back in May. If Hunter decides to have the surgery soon, he could be back on the field in six weeks, which leaves him plenty of time to get healthy before the start of spring training in February.

    • INF Eric Bruntlett's on-field performance (.171 batting average), lack of playing time (105 regular-season at-bats) and exclusion from the roster during the NL Division Series were signs of the Phillies' lack of faith in him as a viable utility infielder. But the Phillies sent their most definitive signal last week by removing Bruntlett from the 40-man roster and granting him free agency.

    • At least a dozen teams have inquired about signing DeRosa, including the Cardinals, Mariners, Nationals, Giants, Phillies, Orioles, Rangers, Yankees, Mets, Twins and Braves, the L.A. Times reports.
Recommendation: It looks like DeRosa is set to receive a large multi-year deal if there truly are that many viable bidders for his services. Small payroll teams like the Twins may not have much of a chance to sign him as a result.
