    • RHP Rafael Betancourt's $5.4 million option for 2010 was declined by the Rockies, but they want to retain him. There was no buyout. Betancourt made $3.35 million in 2009, when the Rockies acquired him July 23 from the Indians for minor league right-hander Connor Graham. Betancourt, 34, went 3-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 32 games for the Rockies with five walks, 29 strikeouts and 17 hits allowed in 25 1/3 innings. The Rockies are trying to work out a two-year deal with Betancourt with an average annual value below $5.4 million.

    • LHP Andy Pettitte recently filed for free agency, but it's unlikely he would play with a team other than the Yankees. Pettitte, 37, had the only other potentially realistic door closed when his home state Houston Astros reportedly said they would not be interested in reacquiring him and he was unlikely to want to leave the Yankees anyway with another shot at a World Series in 2010. Pettitte's only obstacle to a return is most likely retirement as he has said he will make his decision with his family in mind.

    • RHP Sergio Mitre's club option for 2010 was not picked up by the Yankees, and the spot starter is arbitration eligible. As the Yankees attempt to stockpile pitching depth, Mitre could return if they are able to get him at a low enough price. He went 3-3 with a 6.79 ERA in 12 games last year, including nine starts.

    • LHP Renyel Pinto may have thrown his last pitch for the Marlins. Pinto is one of 11 arbitration-eligible Marlins, and the team could decide he is too expensive. He made $404,000 last year while going 4-1 with a 3.70 ERA in 73 appearances.

    • RHP Craig Hansen is finally starting to recover from a nerve problem in his neck that did not allow him to pitch after April 19 last season. The nerve is beginning to generate to where he is slowly regaining strength in his neck. While Hansen is not expected to be ready for the beginning of spring training, he should be able to pitch at some point next season after doctors feared he might be forced to retire.

    • RHP Braden Looper did not have his $6.5 million option for 2010 exercised by the Brewers. Instead, the club paid Looper a $1 million buyout and will use the money saved to pursue other pitchers. Looper was 14-7 last season and led the Brewers with 194 2/3 innings pitched but also posted a 5.22 ERA and surrendered 39 homers, most in the majors. The option was mutual, so if the Brewers exercised their half, Looper would have had three days to do likewise. GM Doug Melvin said he might revisit signing Looper later in the offseason, but that appears unlikely.

    • RHP Tim Lincecum wasn't considered a clear favorite for the NL Cy Young Award when the regular season ended, especially because he had 15 wins and faced fierce competition in St. Louis co-aces Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. But Lincecum captured the award for the second consecutive year, becoming the first pitcher in history to do so in his first full two seasons in the majors. Meanwhile, Lincecum must appear in a Vancouver, Wash., court on Dec. 22 for an arraignment in his marijuana case. According to police, he surrendered 3.3 grams of pot and a pipe during an Oct. 30 traffic stop.
      (Yahoo! Sports)
    • Lincecum has won the NL Cy Young Award, becoming the first repeat winner in the major leagues since Randy Johnson was voted the prize four straight times from 1999-2002.
Advice: Lincecum led the NL with 261 strikeouts and tied for the league lead with four complete games and two shutouts. Only 10 points separated Lincecum and St. Louis pitchers Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright in one of the closest ballots in the award's history.

    • RHP Roy Halladay, who figures to be a central figure in the Jays' off-season -- will they keep him for the 2010 season, the final year of his current contract or will they trade him as part of a rebuilding process? -- finished fifth in the Cy Young voting with 11 third-place votes. It marked the fourth consecutive season that Halladay, who won the award in 2003, has placed in the top five in voting. On the season, Halladay, the starting AL pitcher at the All-Star Game, was 17-10 with a 2.79 ERA and 208 strikeouts. He also topped the major leagues with nine complete games.
